3 Illustrated Sermon The Five Foolish Girls Matthew 25:1-13 Supplies Needed: Snowboard, snowboard boots, gloves, helmet, snowboard outfit, goggles, lantern, oil, 2 clocks (one without the hour/minute hands) Preparation: Prepare the lantern with oil; buy two inexpensive clocks and remove the hands from one of them. Intro: Today I want to talk to you about an extreme sport, called snowboarding. (Pull out snowboarding gear). Up here I have a real snowboard. In order to snowboard you have to go up to a mountain and then you have to strap in and then wait a minute! You need more than just a board to go snowboarding, right? You need warm clothes underneath your snowboarding outfit, goggles, gloves, a helmet, boots, and a snowboard. Then you are prepared to go. Many Christians are not prepared for the day when they will meet Jesus. Just like a snowboarder, we have to make sure we are ready for the day we will see Jesus. Object Lesson 1: One time Jesus told a story about ten girls. These girls were not married yet. In those days it was customary for a man to come from a far away land to find a wife. He was called the bridegroom. In this story there were ten girls waiting with their lamps for the groom to show up. (Light lamp and continue talking). Jesus said that five were wise and five were foolish. The wise girls brought extra oil for their lamps and the foolish girls didn t bring extra oil. They kept waiting and waiting and waiting and the groom still had not shown up. They all eventually fell asleep. Finally the groom came into town and the alarm was sounded. All the girls grabbed their lamps and jumped up. The 5 foolish girls didn t have enough oil, so theirs ran out and their lamps did not work. They had to go into town to buy more oil. But when they returned with their oil, the groom had already gone in to the banquet and they were left outside. They weren t prepared, were they? Object Lesson 2: What do I have up here? (Bring out the regular clock and allow for response). What does a clock do? (allow time for response) That s right! It tells you what time it is. It tells you that it s time to eat, go to school, go to bed The Bible says that no one knows what time the Lord will return to earth to take us to heaven. (Bring out clock without hands) Look at this clock. Can anyone tell what time it is? No. It s like the return of Jesus; no one knows the hour or the minute. We must always live our lives as if we re prepared to meet Jesus living extreme for Jesus every day, until He returns. In order to be ready, there are three things we need to do: 1. Believe in Him We must believe in our hearts that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and must make him the Lord of our lives. You can t live for someone that you don t believe in.

4 Illustrated Sermon The Five Foolish Girls Matthew 25:1-13 (Continued ) 2. Confess your sin Confessing your sins means admitting what you have done. What is sin? Sin is anything we think (point at head), say (point at mouth), or do (point toward the kids), that breaks (act like your breaking a stick) God s laws. We need to tell God what we have done wrong and ask Him to forgive us through His Son Jesus. 3. Live for Him Now you must live your life for God by reading your Bible and obeying what it says, going to church, and praying. I know you re not perfect, I m not perfect; no one is, but we can strive everyday to live for Him. If we make a mistake, we need to ask for forgiveness, and then turn away from that sin and never do it again. Closing / Altar Time Boys and girls, you must always be ready to meet Jesus. We never know when He may return or when we might leave this earth. Let s pray right now and make sure we are all prepared to meet Jesus. (This is an opportunity to pray for salvation).

5 (The Time Blaster Skit can be used with a puppet or a live person. You can set the skit up as if you are bringing the character back from Bible times.) (Using a Hebrew accent) Hi, I m Rachael, and I am very upset right now! Well, what happened is that nine other girls and myself were waiting for a bridegroom to come and pick one of us to marry him and I didn t get picked! I am so mad! That evening, we were waiting so long, and waiting..and.. well..it got late. We all had our lamps and we were just sitting around passing the time, hoping for the bridegroom to show up. Five of the girls brought extra oil and the other five of us just had the oil that was in our lamps. That bridegroom took a VERY long time to get here and while we were waiting, some of us ran out of oil! Men!! They are always late!! Oye-vay! The other girls would not give us any of their oil, so we had to go into town and buy some. When we got back the bridegroom had already come and we missed him! We couldn't believe it! Well, I ll tell you this...i am going to make sure that I am prepared with enough oil next time. Well, I ve got to go stock up on some more oil. Shalom for now.
