Cook 柯立天老师 Mondays, 12:20pm-3:00pm (3 Credits) Office Hours: TBA (See me) Course Description This course will introduce students to the major developments in global Christianity and, secondarily, Christianity in China. Emphasis will be placed on: the developments of the church in patristic period; the ecumenical councils and the development of theology; the development of a cultural and theological synthesis of the middle ages; the crusades; the precursors, content, and personalities of the Protestant Reformation; the contributions of classical Protestant orthodoxy and subsequent rise of denominations; the rise of secularism and the `Enlightenment ; awakenings, revivals, missionary expansion and global Christianity; and modern theological trends. In each era, we will point to the relevance of the broader developments of church history and the specific growth of Christianity in China. Course Objectives 1. Students should master the general development of Christian institutions and theology from the patristic period to the modern Church. 2. Students should gain a greater understanding of their own faith tradition within this larger story Christian history. 3. Students should understand the development of Christianity in China within the broader development of global Christianity. 4. Students should appreciate distinctive contributions provided by Christians from faith traditions other than their own. Students should also be better equipped to join in fruitful interaction and partnership with churches from Asia, Africa, and Latin America. 5. Students, through the study of God s acts in history, should sharpen their theological understanding, be better equipped for ministry, and have a greater love for Jesus Christ and his Church.

3 Course Requirements Mid-Term and Final Exam The material covered on exams will be cumulative and will be largely based on material covered in class lectures and discussion. Mid-Term Exam Due: March 12 Final Exam Due: May 8 Reading and Reflection Papers On Populi you will be asked to fill out a form indicating if you completed all of the reading. Reading must be completed on time. Write a short reflection on each Noll and Leung, approximate length 500 1,000 words each (or characters in Chinese). You must read each book completely. Noll Due: April 30 Leung Due: April 23 Augustine and Bainton: Read a minimum of 150 pages from each book. You may choose which parts of the book you choose to read. Write a short paper (500-1,000 words; or 800-1,600 Chinese characters) on each book. Indicate which pages you read on the report. Augustine Due: February 19 Bainton Due: March 26 Note: All papers should be sent to me at rcook@les.edu as an attachment. Assignments are due at midnight. Grades will be reduced one grade (e.g. A- to B-) on late papers; participation in discussion is essential. Grading Reading and Quizzes 10% Mid-Term Exam 20 % Final Exam 30% Reflection Papers 40%
