(Matthew 21:9) Did You Know? The Last Supper most likely took place on the eve of Passover. Jesus sent two disciples to find a house in Jerusalem for the Passover celebration. The unusual sight of a man carrying a water jar directed them to the house. Jesus would celebrate the meal as a teacher with his disciples, not among a family group as expected. The entire focus of the meal was on Jesus death. The prediction of betrayal and the disciples denials happened during the meal. Mark also showed Jesus anticipation of deliverance from his enemies and exaltation. Jesus emphasized that the person who would betray him was one of the Twelve. Jesus said the betrayer was the person who dipped his bread in the common dish after him. Mark filled in the details about Judas s plot to hand Jesus over to his enemies. The shared bread was followed by drinking from a common cup. Jesus spoke the words about his death over the bread and the wine. Jesus death was the foundation for the new covenant between God and humanity. Jesus sacrificial death is part of the divine plan that brings the kingdom into existence. The of the Last Supper leads into the plot to destroy Jesus, and Jesus disciples scattering because they were too frightened to stand with him. Peter thought that Jesus death would mean the end of his relationship with Jesus. But the continues beyond the cross. Every time we share the Lord s Supper together at the Communion table, we remember the death of the Lord Jesus. We look ahead to the day of glory when he comes again, and we celebrate with him in the kingdom of God. WORSHIP: q Praise and Prayer q Talk About Everyone Older Children Younger Children Requires preparation. 20 Deep Blue One Room Sunday School Leader Guide

3 ASK: Why do you think Jesus gave the disciples a sign to help them find the room for the Passover meal? Why did they go to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover? BREAD AND CUP Supplies: Reproducible 3d, scissors, tissue paper in a variety of colors, clear contact paper Make copies of Bread and Cup (Reproducible 3d) for each child. SAY: Jesus shared his last supper with his disciples. During the meal, they shared a loaf of bread and drank from a cup of wine. This reminds us of Communion that we share together in church. We are going to make a stained-glass picture of a loaf of bread and a cup. Give each child a copy of Bread and Cup. Cut around the entire picture. Cut the bread and cup out of the middle. Older children may need to help the younger children do this cutting. Cut a piece of contact paper the size of the entire picture. Take the cover off and place the sticky side facing up. Choose what colors of tissue paper you like, and tear or cut little pieces. Stick the tissue paper pieces to the contact paper. You don t have to cover the entire piece of contact paper, just enough to show through where you cut out the bread and cup. The pieces can overlap a little. Place the entire picture on the contact paper with the tissue paper showing through the cutout in the middle. Stick it to the contact paper. Cover the top with a second piece of contact paper the same size as the first. Try not to get any air bubbles in the contact paper. Trim around the edges where the contact paper is showing. ASK: Why do you think churches use stained-glass pictures in the windows? SAY: If you place your bread and cup stained-glass picture on a window, the sun will shine through the different colors of tissue paper. BOWLING QUIZ Supplies: plastic bowling pins and ball or empty water bottles with any plastic ball, blindfold, note-size sticky paper Write numbers 1 10 on the note-sized sticky paper and stick them to the bowling pins. If you knock down a bowling pin, you will get to answer a question about our. We will continue until all of the questions have been answered. 22 Deep Blue One Room Sunday School Leader Guide

4 Choose a volunteer to be It. Tie the blindfold around the person s eyes. Turn the child around a couple of times. (You may not want to do this with the younger children.) The other children can give the blindfolded child directions about where to go such as two steps forward or move to the left a little. With help from the others, the child bowling should be able to move to the line to throw the ball. The younger children s line should be closer than the older children s line. When the bowler has reached the line, the other children will tell him or her to throw the ball. If the bowler knocks down a pin, the leader will ask the question with the same number that is stuck to the pin, If the bowler answers the question correctly, that pin is removed from the line and the bowler chooses the next player. If the bowler doesn t know the answer, the pin is placed back in the line with the others and the leader chooses the next player. Clues may be given to help the players come up with the correct answer. SHARING BREAD Supplies: table coverings, paper plates, loaf of homemade bread, paper towels Allow the children to wash their hands before handling their food.. SAY: Jesus and his disciples shared a loaf of bread. Each one broke off a piece of the bread, then passed the loaf on to the next person. Let s share a loaf of bread for our.
