Rector s Window Fr. John Broussard God s Grace and Blessings to you all In Pope Pius XII s consecration of the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary he explains: Consecration to the Mother of God, is a total gift of self, for the whole of life and for all eternity; and a gift which is not a mere formality or sentimentality, but effectual, comprising the full intensity of the Christian life - Marian life. This consecration, the Pope explained, tends essentially to union with Jesus, under the guidance of Mary. This mentality of a distinctly Marian Christian life has guided millions of Christians over the centuries to a deeper experience of faith and union with God. It seems to support an essential desire to know the Creator. Mary does, in a unique and important way, guide all of her adoptive children to her Son. Here at Mary s Chapel in Champion, WI, and especially during this centennial anniversary year of the apparitions at Fatima, the reality of Mary s guidance is intensely felt. The example and model that the Blessed Mother provides with her own life and response to the vocation she was given provides a stability in the expression of our own faith. The message of Our Lady of Good Help (and the messages of Our Lady of Fatima) exhorts us all to a deeper commitment to faith through prayer and knowledge of the Truth. As the Scriptures relate: Grace to you and peace be accomplished in the knowledge of God and of Christ Jesus our Lord (2 Peter1:2) The celebration of Mary s Assumption into heaven holds special significance by all those who participate in the life of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help. It is always a day marked with special solemnity (as it was also one of Adele Brise s favorite feasts), and when many come to experience the love of Christ through the love of Mary. God chose Mary as the instrument through whom He would come to us, so He also chose Mary as an instrument through whom we should go to Him. At the Shrine, Our Blessed Mother s intercession is always known. Mary s life, words, and example all help mold us into an image of her Son. Please join us this August 15 in the celebration of Mary s Assumption. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: What the Catholic faith believes about Mary is based on what it believes about Christ, and what it teaches about Mary illumines in turn its faith in Christ (CCC 487). This reality helps to direct our hearts and minds to God through Mary. Only, how are they to call upon him until they have learned to believe in him? And how are they to believe in him, until they listen to him? And how can they listen, without a preacher to listen to (Romans 10:14)? Mary is that preacher, through the example of her life and virtue, that calls us to listen to the commandments of her Son; because it is in this that salvation is found. Please join us in our Novena of Masses and prayer in preparation for the celebration of the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin into heaven this August 15. Your novena requests and intentions will be remembered each day. Please unite with us in prayer during our Assumption novena this year. We deeply appreciate your prayers and support of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help; let us always remember one another in prayer.

Pilgrimage Spotlight The Sovereign Military Order of Malta August 3-7; SMOM Members Help Spread the Messages, Mission and Miracles of Our Lady of Good Help with the World By Corrie Campbell, Events and Communications Coordinator Pilgrimages to the National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help have been steadily increasing in number since Champion Shrine s designation as the only churchapproved Marian Apparition site with National Shrine status in the United States of America. It is a rare distinction shared by only a small number of religious pilgrimage sites worldwide. Now, when people talk about Lourdes, Fatima, Guadalupe, Champion Shrine will be among that special list of places at which The Blessed Virgin Mary has appeared. Until recently, Our Lady of Good Help at Champion was a cherished and beloved pilgrimage site that existed outside of the global spotlight shone onto other sacred sites with similar designations. But, that is now changing. Word is spreading about Champion Shrine to those who seek solace through Mary, to Jesus. Fortunately, so is our Blessed Mother s message and the amazing graces with which she has blessed so many here at this humble, peaceful place that is so noble in its simplicity. Helping to spread the word about the graces of Our Lady at Champion Shrine are the Knights, Dames and auxiliary members of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. For those who are not familiar with the origins and history of one of the most ancient layperson orders of the Catholic Church, The Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM) was founded in 1048 by merchants of the Marine Republic of Amalfi in Jerusalem. Known then as the Knights Hospitaller, their mission was to provide medical care to pilgrims in the Holy Land. Pope Paschal II approved the foundation of the hospital and placed it under the aegis of the Holy See, recognizing it as a sovereign military order in The Order is subject to international law, under United Nations permanent observer status, maintains diplomatic relations with 106 states, operates embassies and, through its hospitaller mission, has defended the faith and taken on support of the sick on healing pilgrimages through its Priories and associations worldwide. Membership in the Order is by invite only. There are, presently, 13,500 members world-wide under Six Grand Priories: Rome, Lombardi/ Venice, Naples/Sicily, Bohemia, Austria and England. In the United States, three associations Federal, American and Western- have made The National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help their international pilgrimage site. Knights, Dames and auxiliary members host malades (a French term for those who are sick, those with disabilities and infirmed) to Champion Shrine for prayer, reflection and healing - emotional, physical and spiritual. SMOM members have, traditionally, traveled with malades to Lourdes, France because of the healings so many have experienced there, but are now adding Champion Shrine as a premier pilgrimage destination because of the healing graces that have occurred at Champion Shrine. Last year, SMOM member Peter Scudner produced a documentary that debuted on EWTN about the healing graces of the Shrine that played to a very large audience. Those in the Order hope to spread the word about Champion Shrine National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help 1

Pilgrimage Spotlight Continued to SMOM members throughout the world and have begun to do that through the SMOM annual international pilgrimages. While on pilgrimage to the National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help, members of the Order stay in the Greater-Green Bay area, participate in prayer and planned pilgrimage activity and attend Mass at Champion Shrine with The Most Rev. David L. Ricken, Bishop of Green Bay. Bishop Ricken recently fostered the formation of a local Order of Malta group with governance under the American Association of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (New York, USA). As facilities are expanded to better accommodate and serve those who are sick, have been infirmed and those with disabilities, one of the local SMOM group s main missions will be to provide volunteer assistance to the National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help. Over the course of the past two years, Champion Shrine grounds and facilities have undergone major renovations, providing myriad accessibility options for easy access to its Apparition Oratory, its new welcome and education center, updated restrooms and its Apparition Chapel. As Champion Shrine continues to grow and attract hundreds of thousands of people from throughout the world, (expected number of pilgrims this year is 150,000) local SMOM members hope to host many more malades on pilgrimage and assist the Shrine in its planning and development of accessible facilities and by volunteering to staff those facilities on site, year round. This year s SMOM International Pilgrimage at Champion Shrine will take place August 3-7, with more than 250 from three separate associations in America expected. The staff and volunteers of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help are looking forward to hosting these and other international members of SMOM annually. Champion Shrine continues to grow and attract hundreds of thousands of people from throughout the world... If you are interested in planning a group pilgrimage, the National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help has just produced an updated pilgrimage planning guide that will direct you to area attractions, accommodations and dining locations near Champion Shrine. 5 Event Spotlights The Good News of Our Lady of Good Help Spreading Worldwide Through TV, Radio, Movie, Social Media and Book Projects By: Corrie Campbell, Communications and Events Coordinator A lot has happened over the winter and spring months at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help in terms of communicating Our Lady s message and mission to a larger group of Pilgrims worldwide. Since the Shrine s designation August 15, 2016 as a National Shrine and its subsequent designation as an international pilgrimage destination site of the Order of Malta worldwide, pilgrimages to the Shrine have nearly doubled. The uptick in pilgrimages resulted in the hiring of a new pilgrimage planning coordinator and the addition of more accessible accommodations here at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help. While growing pains here on site present a wonderfully challenging aspect of our upward growth pattern, one of the more important blessings we realize when Our Lady of Good Help calls her pilgrims here to Champion is the inspiration they draw from their time here. Oftentimes, their prayerful, peaceful experiences are so life transforming that they feel a compelling desire and need to share their stories and bring the good news of Our Lady of Good Help to the world. books. Here are just a few of the media projects in which Champion Shrine has been, and will continue to be, featured prominently: HELPED BY MARY DOCUMENTARY BY PETER SCUDNER Peter Scudner, a renowned documentary filmmaker who is also a Knight in the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, filmed The SMOM Order s 2016 pilgrimage to Champion Shrine and conducted interviews of those who have experienced Our Lady s graces at Champion. Those interviews were woven artfully into a compelling documentary called Helped by Mary, that aired on EWTN over the winter and now plays at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help. part of the TV program, Discover Wisconsin, the nation s oldest and most acclaimed tourism show. Our Lady of Good Help is featured in that program as the only Church-Approved Marian Apparition Site in America. The half-hour TV program focuses on pilgrimages to three Marian Shrines of WI. The project involved a year of filming by DW staff and crew, was spearheaded by Emmy award-winning TV producer, Greg Smith, of Discover Wisconsin, with content respectfully and creatively presented by an award-winning directorial team led by Jenny Ingish. The TV program had its premier at Riverside Ballroom in Green Bay as part of Champion Shrine s volunteer recognition night. The TV program will air in various markets on Discover Wisconsin TV affiliates throughout Wisconsin for the next two years and can be viewed online at destinations/wisconsins-marianshrines. At no point in time in the Shrine s history has that been more apparent than the present when the National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help and the stories of Our Lady s graces and her messages and missions here are the subject of numerous TV, radio, social media and movie broadcasts, as well as magazine, newspaper articles and DISCOVER WISCONSIN TV S SPIRITUAL WISCONSIN: WISCONSIN S MARIAN SHRINES In March, 2017, shortly after the debut of Helped by Mary on EWTN, Spiritual Wisconsin: Wisconsin s Marian Shrines was released as National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help 3

Event Spotlights Continued MARY, OUR MOTHER FOUNDATION TWO CD-SET OF INTERVIEWS AT CHAMPION SHRINE Earlier this Spring, Greg Amaya, founder of the Mary, Our Mother Foundation, of Atlanta, Georgia, released a two-cd set of recordings of interviews he conducted in the Spring of 2016 with volunteers, staff and pilgrims here at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help. That set is now available in CD format on line through: immigrant to whom the Blessed Mother appeared in Through his TV program and his many speaking engagements, Stefanick reaches hundreds of thousands of people per year, many of them younger Catholics. You can catch Surf and Turf on the Real Life Catholic TV Series on EWTN. Or, the program is available on DVD set through the Real Life Catholic website at RELEVANT RADIO BROADCASTS In May, 2017, as part of the World Centenary Celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the Apparitions at Fatima, the Green Bay Diocesan Council of Catholic Women sponsored a Marian Day at Champion Shrine. Three of the world s top speakers joined us in prayer and reflection that day, among them: David Carollo, Executive Director of the World Apostolate of Our Lady of Fatima; Father Francisco Pereira, Chaplain at The Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima, in Fatima, Portugal who had opened the year celebration earlier in the week with Pope Francis; and Julianne Stanz, Director of New Evangelization for the Diocese of Green Bay and emcee for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops conference of Catholic Leaders in Florida in July, CHRIS STEFANICK S SURF AND TURF TV EPISODE FOR THE REAL LIFE CATHOLIC ON EWTN A surprise visit back in March, 2017 by Chris Stefanick, host of the popular TV series, Real Life Catholic, resulted in an episode called Surf and Turf that features Champion Shrine. 7 This and other special events of Marian Month at Champion Shrine were broadcast on Relevant Radio, which Father Rocky has its world headquarters in Green Bay, WI. With the recent merger of Midwest-based Relevant Radio and West Coast-based Immaculate Heart Radio, which has stations in California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico, Relevant Radio will now broadcast to 120 radio stations and translators in 39 states, reaching an estimated listening audience in excess of 133 million. Relevant Radio features some of the most engaging and dynamic hosts in Catholic Radio today, among them Drew Mariani, Father Rocky and the Morning Air crew. We are blessed to have them here on site at Champion often, and even more blessed to have them bringing people closer to Jesus, through Mary during their coverage of events and interviews with those who have been on pilgrimage at Champion Shrine. One of Father Rocky s masses during Walk to Mary on May Celebration day drew 30,000-plus viewers within five minutes of opening it up to the world during a Facebook live broadcast. Due to the success of that initial Mass offering online through Facebook, we will be broadcasting all of our Saturday masses from Champion Shrine, reaching pilgrims throughout the world, once we complete our technology infrastructure upgrade in mid-fall, VISITING JOURNALISTS Champion Shrine staff field, facilitate and accommodate media requests daily for interviews and information, (the most recent from Living Bread Radio Network) and host journalists on site who come from all parts of the globe to participate in the Greater-Green Bay Area Visitor and Convention Bureau s Visiting Journalist Program. These types of requests for interviews and information will likely quadruple over the course of the next year, into 2018, when the Green Bay Catholic Diocese and The National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help become the destination for the worldwide Catholic Media Conference (summer, 2018) sponsored by the Catholic Press Association. 8 Event Spotlights Continued MARIAN PILGRIMAGE BOOK BY MARJORIE FENELON Renowned Catholic Author Marjorie Fenelon is releasing her new book called, Marian Pilgrimage: Discovering Mary Across the USA in which Champion Shrine will be featured prominently as the only church-approved Marian Apparition site in the United States of America. Fenelon met June 23, 2017 with another notable author and Champion Shrine historian Father Edward Looney and longtime Shrine Docent, Lisa Larson, both of whom offered background and input. Follow Marge s journey to Champion and beyond at introducing-marian-pilgrimagediscovering-mary-across-the-usa. DR. BRIAN CALLISTER TO SPEAK DURING KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS SILVER ROSE PRESENTATION Dr. Brian Callister will be our featured guest speaker during the twoday Knights of Columbus Silver Rose Presentation Ceremony at Dr. Callister Champion Shrine August 1 and 2, The Silver Rose symbolizes respect for life, from conception, to natural death. Dr. Callister is a respected national authority on respect for life issues. He will speak on that topic August 1 from 12:15-1:15 PM and again August 1, from 6 PM, until 7 PM. On August 2, he will speak after 11 AM Mass, from 12:15, until 1:15 PM. HIGHLIGHT OF UPCOMING EVENTS AT THE SHRINE From day-long retreats, masters in theology courses taught by scholars, to presentations, conferences and speaking engagements, our events here at Champion Shrine are growing in both scope and size. We draw world-renowned Catholic speakers/presenters who, in turn, draw considerable attention and larger crowds for the Shrine. As such, due to increases in attendance at events, we find ourselves in a transition phase in terms of places we can offer these services. At present, any event at which there are 300 or more, will be held in a large tent outdoors, with golf cart drivers available for the transport on the grounds for those with mobility issues. With the exception of the August 15 Feast Day Mass for the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary which will, this year continue to take place in the front outdoor altar area, larger events will take place in tents in the front parking lot of the grounds. 9 Mass of the Assumption August 15 Feast Day Mass for the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary By: Sister Mardelle Meinholz, Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity; Catechesis Coordinator for the National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help Cannon, Sashes, and Praise No feast at the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help has been celebrated with more festivity than the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the past, local parishes formed their own processions and made their way to the Shrine. On the way, other parishes joined them to culminate in a huge procession of praise to the Blessed Mother. One such procession on the 15th of August, 1877, was reported by the Kewaunee Enterprise. It was estimated that 5000 people were present. Hundreds of pilgrims camped out around the Shrine in the open air on the 14th. From Door Peninsula and neighboring towns and cities, Belgians, Flemish, Germans, Irish, Americans, Bohemians, Luxembourgers, and Polish people formed processions under their respective pastors for the August 15 celebration. These processions joined together at Robinsonville (Champion) and proceeded to the Shrine. After arriving at the Shrine, Mass commenced being officiated by four priests. After the Gospel was proclaimed, three sermons in different languages were preached from a platform erected in front of the Chapel. The sermons delivered were in French, Holland (not Dutch), and English. Previous to Mass, sermons in German and Bohemian had been given. After Mass, which was magnificently executed by some of the best singers in this vicinity, the great procession was set in A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars (Rev. 12:1). From the Mass of the Assumption motion and this procession one could not behold without being touched with emotion to the utmost recesses of the heart. The horsemen wearing sashes around their shoulders opened the procession; the sacred harmonies of two bodies of musician, the chants and prayers in different languages; the floating banners; the young girls clad in white bearing the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary; the five priests in sacerdotal robes following the revered statue, and the discharge of a cannon at intervals. This formed a spectacle which no human power alone could produce. More than twenty large banners were counted in the procession and a great number of small ones. Two bands of music, several groups of singers. The singing was done in Latin and German. It was a day of triumph for the Blessed Virgin and for the Church of Christ. It was also in the true sense of the word, an international day of thanksgiving, for nearly all the nations of Europe were present there. It was a day of brotherly union (Kewaunee Enterprise, August 25, 1877). A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars (Rev. 12:1). Today, pilgrims continue to visit the National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help to seek the Blessed Mother s intercession and to thank this mother who cares for her children. However, no longer do pilgrims camp out on the ground; the procession begins at the Shrine after an outdoor Mass; the Chapel bell takes the place of the booming cannon, and the Knights of Columbus in their colorful garb replace the horsemen. However, if one remains quiet long enough, the Queen Mother will whisper into your ear, they have no more wine and do whatever he tells you. Adele Brise heard the voice of the Queen of Heaven requesting her to teach the children about her Son so that they might know Jesus and love him. She spent the rest of her life in service. The Blessed Mother s joy is not only that we come to her to find her Son but also that we reach out in love to others. A great sign appeared in the sky and we are invited to respond as Adele and Mary did, Be it done to me according to your will (Luke 1:38). National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help 7

Volunteer Spotlight Our Lady of Good Help Helper, Larry Ziarnik, Knights of Columbus Eastern Wisconsin District Master By: Corrie Campbell, Events and Communications Coordinator, National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help Chances are, if you have been to the National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help for the Feast Day Mass for the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary or any other major event, you have seen a group of finely- appointed gentlemen in regal hats and attire, flanking the sides of priests, bishops and archbishops in all processions and in places where there is need for oversight and protection during veneration of relics, statues. These men are the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. Celebrating their 135th anniversary in 2017, the Knights of Columbus are one of the oldest layperson charitable organizations in the Catholic church. The goal of Founding Father Michael J. McGivney in 1882: to prevent Catholic men from entering secret societies whose membership was antithetical to Church teaching, to unite men of Catholic faith and to provide for the families of deceased members. For years, Catholic men have been drawn to the Knights of Columbus because of the organization s commitment to serving with virtue one s Church, community and family. That was also the draw for Larry Ziarnik who was invited to join the organization in the 90 s and, as Eastern Wisconsin District Master, now leads more than 23 assemblies in the Green Bay Catholic Diocese and throughout the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. These assemblies include two from Green Bay; the 1197 Marquette Assembly and 1794 St. Jude Assembly, both of which serve the National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help. In his 18 years with the Knights of Columbus, Larry has served in various capacities, first as a Faithful Navigator, then as a Grand Knight, and now as Commander. No matter what the title, his obligation and duties are the same, to exemplify the faith in all actions, Ziarnik says. Our major function locally as an organization is serving the Bishop of the Diocese at all events and funerals, Ziarnik said. Fourth Degree Knights appear at every rosary procession and event at which Bishop David L. Ricken serves as principal celebrant at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help. We consider it an honor to serve and have a great group of dedicated guys who have a strong Marian devotion and dedication to the Shrine. They like to come out, Ziarnik said. 8 National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help It is wonderful to see the growth of the pilgrimages and attendance at events like Silver Rose at Champion Shrine, Ziarnik said. We look forward to coming out here.

In 2016, Ziarnik and the WI Knights of Columbus played an instrumental role in bringing the Silver Rose to the National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help. Through the international program, the National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help receives one of six silver roses circulated throughout the world. The rose symbolizes respect for life in all of its phases. This year, the Silver Rose will be on display at Champion Shrine for two days, August 1 and 2, with special guest Dr. T. Brian Callister (see page 6). The Silver Rose represents the sanctity of life, from conception to natural death, Ziarnik said. The National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help is a perfect location to carry that message. Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus will be on hand for the procession in and out of the Silver Rose at Champion Shrine. During the twoday event, the rose will be on display for viewing, reflection and contemplative prayer before and after Mass. Dr. T. Brian Callister will speak both days about respect for life, from conception to natural death, with times announced on The National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help website: Please Join Us in Prayer, Oct. 1-9, 2017 for the National Novena To Our Lady Of Good Help October 1-9, the nine days leading up the Apparition Anniversary Mass with Bishop David L. Ricken at Champion Shrine, we will pray the National Novena to Our Lady of Good Help. Special on-site programs and events will also take place at Champion Shrine during the nine-day Novena to Our Lady of Good Help.
