2 FROM DioET Connections THE BISHOP JAN-FEB THE RT REV. GEORGE D. YOUNG, III Imagine MY DEAR SISTERS AND BROTHERS OF THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH IN EAST TENNESSEE, At one point in my parish ministry, I had a parishioner who had considerably more theological training and experience than I, and I could count on him to give me feedback on my sermons. Sometimes that was good, and other times not so much. On one occasion, I preached about the Great Commission (Mt. 28:16-20), and lo and behold, he said it was one of the best on that passage he had heard. Whew! The main point of the sermon was that the Great Commission ultimately finds its foundation in the New Commandment (John 13:34-35). That is, we are to go out into the world because of love, because that s how Jesus loved and loves us. We ve been talking a great deal over the past years about going out into the world, and specifically going out into the neighborhood. Some are confused about the neighborhood, thinking it narrowly means those geographic areas near where they live, or where their churches are. Neighborhoods certainly are those, but I invite us to imagine in much broader terms. Imagine: Out where the people are Imagine: People who are not necessarily part of our families, our friends, our churches, our clubs, but are in fairly close proximity Imagine: People with whom we don t usually interact Imagine: People whose lives and routines and struggles we don t really know about This is a step in the right direction in grasping what it means to go out into the neighborhood. Not meeting needs which we feel good about doing; not solving problems which we see ourselves skilled at doing; not even offering anything except ourselves, our attention, and our openness. Then, and only then, are we in a position to respond to the needs of the neighborhood. We begin with love, as Jesus loves, we are sent out into the world, and only when we connect and build relationships with people are we, with integrity, able to partner with them. We can then share our own spiritual stories, work together for justice, and discern human needs together in a less than patronizing way. This strikes me as what Jesus sends us out to be and do. It s Jesus stuff, it s the Jesus way. What do you say? Let s go! Photo Robert Batey Photography by anna garber Young people with an active imagination will choose from three day camps to be held at St. Joseph the Carpenter Episcopal Church this summer. Thanks to a grant from the Diocese of East Tennessee s Opportunity Fund for social ministries, Beverly Gwinn Jones, who has directed summer drama camps for seven years, is expanding the offering into art and music camps as well as drama. She is a local artist and a lifelong actress on both stage and screen. She is originally from Knoxville. Last year Jones, of Two Coyotes Studio in Sevierville, found a new home for her summer camp at her church St. Joseph s on Hardin Lane. It was such a blessing to have an indoor space large enough to handle more youth, she said. In addition, she worked with other teachers and volunteers from the church. We had an awesome camp with 24 youth ages 9 to 16, she said. That experience created enthusiasm for two more camps a musical theater camp and an art camp. St. Joseph s rector, the Rev. Paige Buchholz, told Jones about the Opportunity Fund. Jones consulted with the Two Coyotes board, obtained the church vestry s permission, and made a successful application for the grant. We will create our own stories to show in drama camp and experience Broadway s greatest hit songs in Musical Theater Camp, Jones said. Plus our art camp will bring in art teachers to teach the joys of sculpture, journal making, artist trading cards, mask making, weaving on hula hoops, art journaling and scrap booking, and a splash of painting and drawing. about outside the box: creative camps for imaginative X youth Drama Camp - June a.m. to 3 p.m. THEME: I VE GOT TO TELL THIS STORY! 5 GOD S PEOPLE CALLED TO PRACTICE THEIR WAY INTO A NEW KIND OF BELIEVING Abraham struggled with his cultural identity so God called him out of Ur into the unknown to build a new covenant and identity The Hebrew people struggled and labored under a Pharaoh who did not know Joseph, so God inspired Shiphrah and Puah to take a big risk leading to liberation. The Kingdom of Judah s very existence and uniqueness was being crushed by the Babylonian super power, so God traveled with the chosen into exile and into a new hard earned identity. Israel contemplated insurrection as they were crushed under Roman oppression, so God came among us as Jesus calling his followers into redeeming relationships that subverted old ways of thinking God did these things to build a relationship that pushes the beloved into a new spiritual reality. In every instance God s people were called to practice their way into a new kind of believing. Do we believe that God is doing that with us, in this fractured and continuous time; as churches seem more interested in competing for members than in building Godly relationships? How do you listen to the new thing God is calling us into? Do we the church believe that God is still doing this work of building new identities and new relationships? On Saturday, May 7 over a hundred gathered from faith communities across the Diocese to imagine what it might look like to take on some simple practices designed to transform how we understand the relationship between our faith communities and our local communities. These groups were then invited to consider entering into a time of experimenting with these practices to see if they are right for their communities of faith. The Living Local: Joining God initiative sets out five practices of listening, discerning, experimenting, reflecting, and reengaging that allow a group of lay people to become inspired by what God is up to in their surroundings. These practices are based in the belief that God is doing something and wants us to participate in that. Parishes are invited to partner with teams from across the Diocese for mutual learning. The diocesan staff will provide resources including coaches that will help lead teams through proven practices of having holy conversations, engaging neighbors, and building community relationships. If you are interested in learning more about this, Robert Hartmans is excited about visiting your parish home and discussing what this might mean for you. Schedule a time with him online at or contact him at rhartmas@dioet.org. Dwelling in the Word The text that informs the practice described above is Luke 10:1-12. Below find a simple technique that you are encouraged to take advantage of. The practice is of Dwelling in God s Word so that we might continue to know what God is doing with us. Dwelling in the Word: Luke 10:1-12 In a group read the whole text out loud twice, preferably read once by a woman and once by a man. Take a short pause in between the readings. After the second reading, have the group pair off in twos. Inform the pairs that each member will be invited to share with the larger group what their partner said. Have the pairs discuss these questions together: 1. As the text was read, where did you stop? 2. What insight or sense of God did you gain? 3. What question do you want to ask about the text? After several minutes, bring the group back together. Invite individuals to share what their partner had to say without commentary. DioET Connections JUNE-JULY
6 DioET Connections JAN-FEB 2016 Photo courtesy St. James Episcopal Church Pictured above, left to right, are Liz Wiggers, Michaelangelo Martin, William Morris and the Rev. RJ Powell at St. James Episcopal Church in Knoxville. What Take One Means to Me William Morris Take One really means more to me that I m ever going to be able to explain, but I am going to try. I ve never really had a family or anyone that I could ever call a real friend. I have never been able to trust myself or anyone else, but that all started to change April of last year. I thought it was just another lie the state was telling us, but I signed up, longing for what the flyer said it had to offer. The St. James folks came to see me in prison and the time they spend with me was life-changing. Jesus is my hope, but I believe He put them in my life to show me His love that He shows through them. The warm welcome I got every time I saw them, the encouragement it is just so amazing. I consider them my family. They all accept me for who I am and not for what I have done. The time they all give me is so precious. Something I have never had before. I don t want any money or anything material. The time is the most valuable thing to me and they are willing and do give me plenty of it. They invite me into their church, their homes and into their lives and I really feel at home at St. James. The church holds a special place in my heart. They have been the most loyal people I have ever met and have helped me build confidence in myself. The Father s Will is truly being done through St. James and I thank God every day for such a blessing. 6
7 DioET Connections JAN-FEB 2016 TAKE ONE PRISON MINISTRY - A TRUE GIFT! imagine by liz wiggers I am a person who loves clarity! I pray for it, look for it and hope for it. Life is so complicated and nuanced, I yearn for God to speak to me in a loud booming voice, or in a burning bush or any of those ways that defies misunderstanding or personal rationalizations. I must share that I have been touched by such clarity in the past year. My parish, St. James in Knoxville has a wonderful history of prison work. Pioneers like Jim Muir, with the support of the whole of St. James, were known for work for many decades with men and women in prison and recently released. When (now) Deacon Lee Ragsdale mentioned a new program that was forming in East Tennessee supported by the Tennessee Department of Corrections, I knew at my core that I wanted to be a part of it. The central focus of the program is that each parish, congregation, collective or other group commit to take one person who is due to be released soon from a Tennessee prison. The crux of this program is that a ministry team of two or three folks will visit an incarcerated person and form a relatiownship of support, encouragement, and accountability while the person is in prison and continue the relationship when they are released. From the first time our team visited William, our returning citizen, I knew with blessed clarity that this is what Jesus meant when he said, I was in prison and you came to visit me... I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me. (Matthew 25:36,40) I was amazed at the willingness of William to share his life with complete and total strangers. I was amazed at his capacity to know and love God in a way that I had never experienced. I was grateful for Prison Chaplain Jeff who greeted me at every visit with a hug and a smile. (We agreed not to discuss infant baptism.) I was especially moved by the other inmates and their gratitude that we were visiting William. William prayed for people on our St. James prayer list and we prayed for and with William. We visited William every 3 weeks while he was in prison; we talked about books, bible study, dreams, and navigating the intensity of prison life. We went to volunteer gatherings, a few court hearings on old matters, and even attended his parole hearing which is one of the most anxiety producing things I have ever done. When the time came for William to be released, he had all his plans ordered for his transitional housing and for his employment. We had been checking in with him all along, though truth be told, William did not need much direction on that front as he is/was super motivated to begin again. We were so excited to have him start his new life with the love and support of St. James! We even got to go pick him up on his release day; it was truly a movieworthy moment! William has been out of prison since St. James Episcopal Church in Knoxville has a praying angel above the door welcoming all who enter. Photo by Vikki Myers October 28, 2015; he has a good job and is making new friends. I know that my life is richer for knowing him and thank God every day for the opportunity to see God in someone who I no longer think of as the other. 8 A GOD WHO Moves by the rev. canon patricia (pat) grace The theology that is foundation to the missional approach is just that a way to talk about how God acts or work with a mission in mind. That s one of the first things to notice about this way of being God s church. We stop talking about our parish s mission statement, our strategic plans, our goals and objectives. We turn our faces, hearts and minds to God, in order to discern God s mission and our part in it. This is a shift in focus from what we commonly do. That shift moves from my church has a mission to God s mission has a church. From the earliest days of the Christian tradition, theologians talked about the mission of God, or missio Dei, in Latin. Rather than describing a statement of objectives, those early church mothers and fathers were talking about the nature of God. They were talking about the tendency of God to move. Missio Dei referred to the tendency of God to constantly and consistently move toward relationship. Within the Trinity, those early church leaders understood that the Father moved in love toward the Son and Spirit; the Son, moved to the Spirit and the Father; and the Spirit, to the Father and the Son. This triune God also moves toward relationship with all of creation. This God makes human kind in God s image in order to be in relationship, for love s sake, and no other reason. This God offers to walk with Abraham and all of his offspring, as numerous as the stars. I will be your God and you will be my people, God announces one 8 day. All about relationship. This God will go so far as to take on human flesh and human life, in all its joys and sorrows, to demonstrate just how far this God will go to live in love with us. Every seminarian and master s level theology student has been taught the Greek word for all this movement perichoresis. Literally, this translates as dancing around. But the people who originally coined the term, those early theologians, would have recognized it as a colloquial expression used by everyday people. The word they found to describe this relationship-seeking God meant to them the action of walking around the neighborhood. a god who goes walkabout... a god who just likes to hang out... walking around the neneighborhood with So, from the start, the God who created us, who died and rose for us, who comforts and challenges us still, is a God who goes walkabout. Like the fictional Crocodile Dundee, God moves around everyday spaces to see and hear and experience who and what is out there beyond the confines of individual daily life. We follow a God whose very nature is to move toward relationship in the living, working and playing spaces where God s people find themselves. We worship a God who just likes to hang out. So at the heart of the missional way is motion; that is, an outward focused movement toward others where they are most completely themselves at home, at work, at play. We ve spent a lot of time and energy, money, too, preparing beautiful buildings, attractive programs and inspiring liturgies. All, very worthy and right to do. All good and great things! But we ve relied on cultural norms, peer pressure, and the resilience of seekers to find us and cross our often somewhat daunting thresholds. We ve relied on the cultural value of church to enable folks to work their way through our policies, procedures and customaries; our beloved social structures. The missional way suggests that its time for a change a change in direction. From a church that expects folks to move toward us, to a people who move like the God they believe in toward real relationship. This way is harder. This way is new for us. This way is scary. This way is something that cannot be done in an hour on Sunday mornings. But this way is closer to God s way than some others we have tried. And this way can start with just the slightest movement forward a few steps outside the church walls to see and hear and experience who and what is out there. We serve a God who moves. And therefore, so should we. Photo by 2@graficallyminded, POND5

Work in them as they examine and recommend candidates to serve as the 5th bishop of East Tennessee. Help them propose candidates who will effectively proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ, to challenge our diocese to seek and serve Christ in all persons loving our neighbors as ourselves and to be a blazing light for the kind of justice and peace that leads to all people respecting the dignity of every human being. Be with our diocese that we all may be open to the challenges that this process will bring to us and help the whole church to discern your will for our future.
