CALVARY LUTHERAN CHURCH A Congregation of the Church of the Lutheran Confession 450 W. Ohio Marquette, Michigan PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP: Psalm: 118 (Pg. 148) Prayers: 73 (Pg. 109) 74 (Pg. 109). Organist: Mr. Walter Priebe HYMNS: Easter Breakfast :00am Divine Worship :30am Andrew A. Schaller, Pastor Church: (906) Parsonage: (906) THE RESURRECTION OF OUR LORD April 1, 2018 SCRIPTURE READING MATTHEW 28:1-15 CHURCH CHOIR/CHILDREN: PRAYER A RESURRECTION PROCLAMATION THE FESTIVAL CANTICLE Pastor: Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures. For if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty. CONGREGATION: If Christ is not risen our faith is also empty. P: For, if the dead do not rise, C: then Christ is not risen. P: And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; C: We are still in our sins! P: But now Christ is risen from the dead, C: and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 2 DAILY BIBLE READINGS FOR DEVOTIONS; APRIL 2-7, 2018 Monday - Hosea 13:9-14 Despite their black record of betrayal and spiritual suicide (shades of Judas!), God did not turn His back on Israel but forged ahead on His redemption agenda. Our enemies are not foreign but residential sin, dysfunctional genetics, and mortality. So God came to our rescue, releasing us from sin s grip, giving us new genetics and immortality. Easter is God s redemption agenda, activated and personified in Jesus. Hallelujah! Tuesday - John 20:1-10 Easter dawned in a dark and quiet cemetery, and Mary went there for closure. Surprise! Somebody had decided that Jesus should be moved to a different location. What to do? Go and tell the men, who might be able to decipher the mystery. But they couldn t figure it out either, not even after they saw some valuable clues left behind. The miracle of Easter hadn t dawned on them, and that wonderful surprise was yet to come. Stay tuned. Wednesday - Acts 2:25-32 Peter s Bible Class students needed to understand that David was not referring to himself in Psalm 16 but was referring to the Messiah with the words my soul and Your Holy One. So Peter explained that since David died and stayed dead, he must have been speaking as a prophet about somebody else. About whom? He was speaking concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that HIS soul was not left in Hades, nor did HIS flesh see corruption. THIS JESUS God has raised up (from death)! Thursday - Ezekiel We reject TV s zombie versions of the dead coming back to life, for that s one of Satan s dirty tricks to defame Jesus. The Lord does not create zombies when He reconstitutes skeletons with flesh and then breathes life into their bodies (1-10). God is both capable and loving enough to bring us (and billions of others) up from the dirt, put His Spirit into us and in our renewed, reconstituted life, usher us into our own land of heaven. Friday - Luke 24:1-12 Why do you seek the living among the dead? raises a good point. You don t go to the cemetery if you want to visit with friends, but you go where people are interacting with one another. Even more to the point, if you are looking for Jesus, you just missed Him. He s alive and going on about His business; don t you remember (5-7)? Note: It was quite natural to need reassurance about something so amazing (11-12). Same with us. Saturday - 1 Corinthians 15:50-58 Opposites are not partners. Since rot is the opposite of life and cannot generate life, rot will be left behind (50) when life supersedes death. In the blink of an eye at the final trumpet blast, all the dead will be brought back to life, for God won t let anybody sleep through Judgment Day. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, for this (present) corruptible must put on (future) incorruption, and this (present) mortal must put on (future) immortality. Centuries earlier God used Hosea to preview the whole scenario of death being suffocated, death s stinger losing its poison, and the Law being robbed of its power to condemn us (54-56). How did all that happen? Through our Lord Jesus Christ! Thanks be to God for all these Easter miracles!

P: Peace to you! Blessed are those who have not seen, and yet have believed. C: Glory be to You, My Lord and My God! P: He is Risen! C: He is Risen indeed! HYMN: 199 Jesus Christ is Risen Today, Allelulia! P: O Death, where is your sting? C: O Grave, where is your victory? P: The sting of death is sin, C: and the strength of sin is the law. P: But thanks be to God, C: who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. P: Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the world of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord. The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Let us pray. Almighty God, who through the resurrection of Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, has overcome death and opened to us the gate of everlasting life, we ask You to keep us constantly by Your grace that we may remain dead to sin and alive to righteousness and by your power, triumph over death and the grave in the full image of our risen Lord, to Whom with You and the Holy Spirit be honor and glory throughout eternity. C: Amen! OLD TESTAMENT LESSON: HOSEA 13: O Israel, you are destroyed, But your help is from Me. 10 I will be your King; Where is any other, That he may save you in all your cities? And your judges to whom you said, Give me a king and princes? 11 I gave you a king in My anger, And took him away in My wrath. 12 The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up; His sin is stored up. 13 The sorrows of a woman in childbirth shall come upon him. He is an unwise son, For he should not stay long where children are born.
14 I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death. O Death, I will be your plagues! O Grave, I will be your destruction! Pity is hidden from My eyes. * CHURCH CHOIR CHRIST THE LORD IS RISEN TODAY, ALLELUIA NEW TESTAMENT LESSON: ACTS 2: Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, 31 he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption. 32 This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses. * ALLELUIA RESPONSE (TLH 189) He is arisen! Glorious word! Now reconciled is God, my Lord; The gates of heaven are open. My Jesus did triumphant die, And Satan's arrows broken lie, Destroyed hell's direst weapon. Oh, hear What cheer! Christ victorious Riseth glorious, Life He giveth He was dead, but see, He liveth! GOSPEL LESSON: JOHN 20:1-10 [Matthew 28:1 8; Mark 16:1 8; Luke 24:1 12] Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. 2 Then she ran and came to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and said to them, They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him. 3 Peter therefore went out, and the other disciple, and were going to the tomb. 4 So they both ran together, and the other disciple outran Peter and came to the tomb first. 5 And he, stooping down and looking in, saw the linen cloths lying there; yet he did not go in. ALL CLOSING HYMN Now all the vault of heav n resounds In praise of love that still abounds: Christ has triumphed! He is living! Sing choirs of angels, loud and clear! Repeat their song of glory here: Christ has triumphed! Christ has triumphed! [Refrain] Alleluia, Alleluia! Alleluia! WOMEN Eternal is the gift He brings, Therefore our heart with rapture sings: MEN WOMEN Christ has triumphed! He is living! Now still He comes to give us life And by His presence stills all strife. ALL Christ has triumphed! He is living! [Refrain] MEN Oh, fill us, Lord with dauntless love; Set heart and will on things above That we conquer through Your triumph; WOMEN Grant grace sufficient for life s day That by our lives we truly say: ALL ALL Christ has triumphed! He is living! [Refrain] Adoring praises now we bring And with the heav nly blessed sing; Christ has triumphed! Alleluia! Be to the Father and our Lord, To Spirit blest, most holy God, All the glory, never ending! [Refrain]
THE DISTRIBUTION OF THE SACRAMENT: The Lord's Supper is described in 1 Corinthians 11:23-32 as a most precious medicine for the soul. Like all medicines, of course, it must be used at the right time for the right purpose by the right person, lest it do more harm than good. Thus, we ask all communicants to speak to the pastor before communing, especially if you have not communed here before. The Lord s Supper will be received standing or kneeling before the communion railing. Communicants are asked to come forward together. Those who would like the common cup please indicate it to the pastor. Those who would like the individual cups please take one and then dispose of it in one of the small disposals near the front. DISTRIBUTION HYMN: 206 Jesus Christ, My Sure Defense P: We bless the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. P: We thank You O Lord for Your resurrection, for through it You have given us new birth into a living hope. Grant that through Your Spirit we would know You and walk according to your Word. C: Amen. P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace. C: Amen. 6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; and he saw the linen cloths lying there, 7 and the handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself. 8 Then the other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also; and he saw and believed. 9 For as yet they did not know the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went away again to their own homes. * CONFESSION OF FAITH THE NICENE CREED I Believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth And of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-gegotten Son of God, Begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by Whom all things were made; Who for us men and for our salvation, Came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. and the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven and sits on the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge Both the living and the dead. Whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, The Lord and giver of life, Who proceeds from the Father and the Son, Who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified, Who spoke by the Prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and Apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, And I look for the resurrection of the dead And the life of the world to come. Amen. HYMN: Christ is Arisen
SERMON: JOHN 20: But Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping, and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the tomb. 12 And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. 13 Then they said to her, Woman, why are you weeping? She said to them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him. 14 Now when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking? She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him, Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away. 16 Jesus said to her, Mary! She turned and said to Him, Rabboni! (which is to say, Teacher). 17 Jesus said to her, Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God. 18 Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that He had spoken these things to her. * WHY ARE YOU WEEPING? CHRIST IS RISEN! THE OFFERINGS OF THANKFUL HEARTS THE OFFERING HYMN: (TLH 201: 3-4) Jesus lives! For me He died, Hence will I, to Jesus living, Pure in heart and act abide, Praise to Him and glory giving. Freely God doth aid dispense; This shall be my confidence. Jesus lives! I know full well Naught from me His love shall sever; Life nor death nor powers of hell Part me now from Christ forever. God will be a sure Defense; This shall be my confidence. PRAYER(S) HYMN: Hallelujah! Jesus Lives! P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up Your hearts. C: We lift them up to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks unto the Lord our God. C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise. PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING P: Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. We thank you for Your steadfast love which has brought up our Lord from the dead and delivered us from death and the devil. Graciously receive our prayers that we might be renewed, strengthened, and delivered from all evil. Amen. P: Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. C: We have blessed You from the house of the Lord. Amen. THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, the same night in which He was betrayed, took bread; and, when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to His disciples saying, Take, eat. This is My body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of Me. In the same way He took the cup, after supper, gave thanks, and gave it to them saying, Drink of it, all of you. This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Lord, remember us in Your kingdom, and pray together with us, All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil; for Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen! P: As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord s death until He comes. C: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
