WHO WE ARE WELCOME to Pioneer Imagine the joy that a family feels when a new baby is born! Parents envision the years of happiness that this child will bring and each life that this new baby will touch. This Sabbath, we welcome you to a church that just added over 95,000 new members into its family. As a result of intense ground work followed by two weeks of evangelistic campaigns, the country of Rwanda made Adventist history with a record baptism in May. Although the beautiful African nation is over 7,000 miles away, we rejoice with angels and God s people all over the globe as we welcome our new family members. With the same joy, we extend our arms in welcome to you today and pray that you are blessed as we worship our Father. 4 THE FOURTH WATCH BLOG NOW THAT WE KNOW WHO S RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT WHAT NEXT? BY DWIGHT K. NELSON M onths ago (it seems like years now, doesn t it?) when Ben Carson announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for President, the North American Division of Seventh-day Adventists released the following statement: While individual church members are free to support or oppose any candidate for office as they see fit, it is crucial that the Church as an institution remain neutral on all candidates for office. Care should be taken that the pulpit and all church property remain a neutral space when it comes to elections. Church employees must also exercise extreme care not to express views in their denominational capacity about any candidate for office, including Dr. Carson (NAD/Michigan Conference ). The fact that Dr. Carson is a practicing Seventh-day Adventist no doubt necessitated this official ecclesiastical pronouncement. But thirteen months later Ben Carson and the rest of the twenty or so candidates for the major political parties nominations for president are no longer on center stage. Rather as the result of primaries this week across the nation it seems clear (certainly to the press and political talking heads at least) that the presumptive nominees for President of the United States from the two major parties are Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. In keeping with the North American church s position of political neutrality and its advice that pulpits and pastors maintain that neutrality in their public communications, this blog will obviously not be taking or advocating political sides. That does not, however, mean that we as a people (pastors and parishioners alike) should remain silent in the face of blatant attacks on or denials of deeply held moral values or biblical truths. Political neutrality is not moral neutrality. Russell Moore, head of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention and recognized chief policy spokesman for the denomination, raised eyebrows when a Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) interview with him was posted on the CBN website June 3. When asked what he would pray for were Donald Trump to become President, Moore replied: My primary prayer for Donald Trump is that he would first of all repent of sin and come to faith in Jesus Christ. That s my prayer for any lost person.... And the same thing would be true in terms of Hillary Clinton. ( southern-baptist-leader-donald-trumpa-lost-soul-who-must-repent/) While I disagree with the premise that all occupants of the Oval Office must be born again Christians (our nation has been well served by presidents not of my own evan- 4 PIONEER MEMORIAL CHURCH

gelical persuasion), who could challenge a Christian s prayers for all presidential candidates this election year to come to know Jesus Christ as their personal Savior and humbly but confidently follow Him in their exercise of the presidential office? While the office of President is not a Christian or even spiritual office, it is still a position of powerful moral influence for this nation and for the world. But perhaps Russell Moore made his most thoughtful point when in the interview he acknowledged: Regardless of what happens in November, my primary focus is not November 2016 my primary focus is 2017 and preparing the church to be a church which is going to have to be a sign of contradiction regardless of whether Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump is in the White House. (Ibid.) A sign of contradiction isn t that what Jesus was signaling when He replied to the Roman governor, My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight.... But now my kingdom is from another place (John 18:36)? As radical followers of Christ, we take our marching orders not from a political party nor from a charismatic leader we obey the uncompromising directives of the Most High God. There are political positions held by both major party candidates that the disciple of Christ chooses not to embrace. We don t need to picket or protest the candidate s appearances. But now more than ever in history we need to pray for the nation we will all wake up to the morning after the election. Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people (Proverbs 14:34). You can follow Pastor Dwight s blog at JUNE 1 1,

PIONEER LIFE HELPING PEOPLE FIND THE WAY BY DON WILSON I magine arriving at a major airport and attempting to find a certain concourse and particular gate without any signage. Passengers, flight crews, and airport workers would be going from gate to gate at an increasingly frenzied pace in order to find and board flights or check-in at work assignments. Gate agents and security officers would quickly resort to makeshift signs hastily prepared in a myriad of writing styles and colors. Such efforts would help, but many would still find themselves disoriented or just plain lost in the shuffle. The Pioneer Memorial Church is hardly an airport terminal, but on Sabbath mornings and other times of high use, waymarks, or signage, serve an important function in guidance to a specific room or worship area. Long-term members most likely do not pay attention to wayfinding signs or to those identifying a particular room. Even so, there is a subconscious prompting provided by signs, arrows, and symbols as well as colors. For visitors, the need for signage is quite apparent. How many retail shoppers simply give up and leave a store, often with a vow of never to return, when it seems that nothing can be found or it is perceived that they are not welcomed? 6 PIONEER MEMORIAL CHURCH Visitors quickly form a first impression upon entering PMC, often before meeting a greeter, and informative signage assists them in finding their way. Signs also play an important role in communicating various messages such as that of feeling welcomed, secure, and an awareness of mission. When originally constructed PMC was fitted with signage on doors, some of which remained. But, over the years signs were removed and when the wings were added, most all of the original signage

need for wayfinding signs with arrows for orientation, room identification signage, and to hanging signs that would be visible when walking down halls. A uniform design allowing for future changes to the printed media insert was selected for all applications. Additionally, the church logo was included on directional signs to increase mission awareness and all rooms were numbered to assist in emergency response and room key identification. The Building Committee is pleased to report that the project is now finished and includes 183 signs. Thank you for providing the Church Operating and Building Improvement funds with the resources to allow for this project to be completed along with the many others that are needed to keep Pioneer Memorial in an attractive, secure and welcoming condition. In John 14:6 NKJV Christ proclaims, I am the way. The mission of PMC is the mission of Christ and it is evidenced in many forms. A welcoming, informative environment is enhanced with appropriate signage and these waymarks play a small but silent role in directing all who enter to The Way. Don Wilson is the Chair of the Finance Committee here at PMC. was discarded and only restrooms were identified with the new construction. Wayfinding signage evolved in various forms and was typically taped to walls as were signs identifying Sabbath School rooms and other meeting areas. In the spring of last year, the PMC Building Committee addressed the long-standing need for uniform signage throughout the building. A sub-committee was formed to study messaging, design, and installation. Focus was given to the SUPPORT THIS MINISTRY Please indicate "PMC Operating Expense" on your tithe envelope. JUNE 11,

No, "selig" does not merely mean "blessed," although that word is indeed a wonderful word rich in meaning. "Selig" also means "beatified" or "blissful." Surely there must be many further shades of meaning, too, shades that further deepen and broaden the concept. In his organ setting of a German chorale melody using this word, Johannes Brahms enfolds and undergirds the melody with gently rolling musical figures, perhaps to exemplify a blissful, quietly-ecstatic emotional state. Finally, a lone note in the pedal sounds, perhaps signifying a simple, firm, unswerving foundation for one's faith. JUNE 1 1,
