We prayed with them, we ate with them, we sang with them, we danced with them, we laughed with them and we cried with them. What a great bunch of men these were! Also provided is an opportunity to pray and fellowship with the Carmel volunteers or team members. Carmel provides the transportation for the neighbors picking them up in the church bus (about 5 P.M.) at the Urban Ministry Center (just north of downtown Charlotte) and returning them early the next morning to the Transportation Center in downtown Charlotte by 6 A.M. The logistics for each session requires the work and cooperation of many volunteers. Team members drive the bus, bring out the mattresses, pillows, linens, towels and wash cloths from storage, make the beds, arrange sleeping areas with chairs and bins for clothes, setup the eating area with tables, chairs, eating utensils, etc., Prepare the food, serve it to the neighbors and cleanup the kitchen and eating areas. Also of note is that ALL food has been donated or provided by the team members and participating groups. The season has just ended with the last session on March 20. As the coach of this team I would like to thank our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for making this possible and for the team players that participated. I received an from Matt Daniels (Director of RITI & Community Engagement for Urban Ministry) alerting us to the fact that a neighbor and former RITI guest (at another site) has been identified by the Health Department as being infected with tuberculosis. Please be advised that Matt has also informed me that this guest We finished our RITI season on Tuesday morning (3/21). The latest group of neighbors were most appreciative and Girl Scout Troop #1379 did a superb job with dinner and bag lunches. By Ed Land did NOT stay at Carmel and thus, there is NO risk of exposure at our site. The Attic Sale is returning! Our fun fund raiser will return on Saturday, September 9th! I would also like to thank all of you for your participation, support and prayers for this program at Carmel. The Carmel Letter April 2017 The Folded Napkin I get lots of emails every day. Many from the various forums I occasionally peruse and lots of forwards from friends and acquaintances.

I happened across one of those last week and because it was new to me and seemed to fit with the season, I have published it below.

I never noticed this. The Gospel of John (John 20:7) tells us that the napkin, which was placed over the face of Jesus, was not just thrown aside like the grave clothes.

3 The Carmel Letter April 2017 The Folded Napkin I get lots of s every day. Many from the various forums I occasionally peruse and lots of forwards from friends and acquaintances. Many of them, I don t fully read but save for later. Occasionally, I find one I would like to post in this newsletter. I happened across one of those last week and because it was new to me and seemed to fit with the season, I have published it below. It s not attributed to any particular source but has seemed to survived the test of time. Thank you for your indulgence. Why did Jesus fold the linen burial cloth after His resurrection? I never noticed this. The Gospel of John (John 20:7) tells us that the napkin, which was placed over the face of Jesus, was not just thrown aside like the grave clothes. The Bible takes an entire verse to tell us that the napkin was neatly folded, and was placed at the head of that stony coffin. Early Sunday morning, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance. She ran and found Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved. She said, They have taken the Lord s body out of the tomb, and I don t know where they have put him! Peter and the other disciple ran to the tomb to see. The other disciple out ran Peter and got there first. He stopped and looked in and saw the linen cloth lying there, but he didn t go in. Then Simon Peter arrived and went inside. He also noticed the linen wrappings lying there, while the cloth that had covered Jesus head was folded up and lying to the side. Was that important? Absolutely! Is it really significant? Yes! In order to understand the significance of the folded napkin, you have to understand a little bit about Hebrew tradition of that day. The folded napkin had to do with the Master and Servant, and every Jewish boy knew this tradition. When the servant set the dinner table for the master, he made sure that it was exactly the way the master wanted it. The table was furnished perfectly, and then the servant would wait, just out of sight, until the master had finished eating, and the servant would not dare touch that table, until the master was finished Now if the master were done eating, he would rise from the table, wipe his fingers, his mouth, and clean his beard, and would wad up that napkin and toss it onto the table. The servant would then know to clear the table. For in those days, the wadded napkin meant, I m finished. But if the master got up from the table, and folded his napkin, and laid it beside his plate, the servant would not dare touch the table, because the folded napkin meant, I m coming back! Sit and Stitch The Sit and Stitch ladies will meet on April 5th and 19th in the Church library from 10:00AM until noon. Priscilla Perkins can answer questions. Amani Beads The Amani Bead ladies will meet on April 12th and 26th and we welcome new members. Please join us in the Cathcart Center from 10:00AM until noon. Debbie Ferrell can answer any questions. Thanks to increased member giving, we have maintained our positive net income in the amount of $8,600 for the year. Expenses for the month exceeded budget by 9%, but our member giving through February is up 5% over 2016 YTD. Cash At the end of the month, we have $77,867 cash Budget and Procedure Reminders Last month we reminded committee members that Darlene has the monthly distribution list for each account. We need to simplify her task by having proper approval signatures on our checks / receipts and promptly getting them in to the office. Darlene does us a wonderful service by keeping our bills current and our vendors happy. Ladies Circle Ladies, join us in the library for circle on Tuesday April 11 at 10:00 am. We will be finishing up the the study of John Ortberg's book and video When the Game is Over It All Goes Back in the Box. We will also be preparing sandwiches for Urban Ministry uptown. Children s Choir Performs During Worship Service We also discussed our written Finance Manual, counting responsibilities, ideas to help increase our membership, minimizing errors, confidentiality of information, and the idea of having a Carmel Homecoming. Committee change Wayne Anderson elected to focus his efforts toward our church Property committee rather than Finance committee. While Wayne s dry wit and candor will be missed in Finance, we look forward to seeing his handiwork around our grounds. Thanks to Wayne for all you do!
