4 An Effective Teaching Manual for Elders Mentoring Elders In a Time of Grief Sub- Topic: Developing A Healing Process While Transitioning Through Grief Life brings many trails and tribulation and one of the strongest of all is GRIEF. When we think most of us as Christians think only death, however, Grief comes in many forms. Yes, death is a part of grief but we have hidden grief, silent grief, frustrations, anger and depression as Christians we suffer with Spiritual Grief. Does sound like you in the church, home and within your community? The stages of Grief as follows: Denial, Depression, Anger, Bargaining and Acceptance. Training will be at the following churches: Place: St. Peter s Church of Christ, DOC, Kinston, NC Pastor: Elder Tyrone Haney Date: May 4, 2016 Time: 7:00 p.m. Place: Ray of Hope Church Ministries, Snow Hill, NC Pastor: Apostle Dr. Nancy Reid Date: July 9, 2015 Time: 11: 00 a.m. Place: Christ Anointed Church of Christ, DOC, Spring Hope, NC Pastor: Elder Nanny Stevens Date: August 13, 2015 Time: 10:00 a.m. Place: St. Jude Church of Christ, DOC, Warsaw, NC Pastor: Dr. Evelena Oliver Date: October 1, 2016 Time: 10: a.m. A heartfelt Thank You to the following pastors: Elder(s) Linwood Williams and St. Peter s COC, DOC, Farmville and Shelton Keys and Hickory Grove COC, DOC church family for opening their doors and welcoming this project. May be presented at: Bible Class Women and Men Function Prayer Breakfast Luncheon/Conference If you desire to have this project presented at your church, please contact Dr. Dianna Peppers at (252) Goldsboro-Raleigh Department of Evangelism Jesus raised several people from the dead, but each case differed from His own resurrection. These people would eventually die again. Jesus rose from the dead, never to die again. He defeated mankind s greatest enemy; death. All other problems are problems because they kill us. Once Jesus defeated death, His followers could operate in total security. No struggle is too big for God. No question is unanswerable. No problem is too difficult. The resurrection of Christ s trumpeted good news from the graveyard, in spite of the big problems, in spite of bad predictions, Jesus practiced the law of Victory, decisively defeating even death itself. (Maxwell, C. John) With this in mind and the Great Commission in Saint Matthew 28: the Department of Evangelism held a District Evangelism Workshop on March 12, 2016 at St. Peter COCDOC, where the honorable Elder Linwood Williams serves as pastor. The workshop was twofold: Dr. Evelena Oliver talked about 21 st century Evangelism and ways to fill the empty pews in the church. Real life scenarios were present to demonstrate how to withstand the challenges and why some believers are afraid to evangelize. Dr. Dianna Peppers did a superb job in associating Evangelism with Grief. There were engaging situations and languages of grief that was introduced to the attendees and a great insight was gain. Some tears were shed as some of them relieved their grief in order to progress in gaining souls for the kingdom. There were representations other churches including Flat Rock COCDOC, Sims, North Carolina were Elder Donald Loftin serves as pastor. The church was left with a six month challenge to gain souls for the kingdom and integrated into their local church. Each attendee was asked how many souls they wanted to see come into the church. As they shared their numbers, the Department of Evangelism will be returning on August 13, 2016 back to Saint Peter, Farmville, NC for a check-up visit. A very special thanks to Pastor Linwood Williams who saw the need and invited us to come. We are excited and anxiously waiting for the results. More reporting is coming. 4

5 21 st Century Evangelism We all know that Evangelism as we know it is taking the church to the world. It is not coming to church and getting your souls fed only, but and how do we share it with the world. What is your church doing as a unit? What are or have you done to take the church to the world? Things we need to look at: What is the/your churches environment. By environment I mean; what type of atmosphere is in your church. Is it pleasant, do we speak to one another in a pleasant voice tone; do we speak to the visitors that come to our church other than the ones who extended the invitation; do you have something in place as a visitor package that has been well thought out and put together. The Goal of Evangelism: Developing Fruit-Bearing Disciples. And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying. All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. (St. Matthew 28: ) Every congregation could profit from asking the question, if our church were to disappear tomorrow, would anybody miss it, and if so, who? if the only ones who would miss it are already on the inside, then the congregation has probably settled down into being a nice, comfortable little social club. (Norma Shaw Chuck and Roger Heuser.) Evangelism has been demonstrated in the role of heart in its relationship to other parts of the body: The relationship of evangelism to mission is like the relationship of the heart to the body. Mission is the body. It walks and moves in different content. Sometimes the hands are busy and sometimes the feet. Sometimes eyes are ineffective because the night is so dark that they are useless, and the hands are needed to feel the way. But always the heart beats, sending the blood through the body, nourishing the other organs and keeping the body alive. Evangelism is the heart, both as the pump that circulated the life force and as the seat of the emotions. Without the emotional fervor (zeal, passion, dedication, commitment) of the heart, the love affair with the gospel mission dies. To separate the heart from the body, is to kill the body, to take evangelism out of mission is to cut the heart out of it. (Dana Lee Robert) Challenges facing the church: Political (Government/Politics. Candidates running the president s office are saying and acting unseeingly. Social injustice (unfairness, prejudices, inequality, biases, discriminations.) Demographic (where a person lives and nationalities that live within the community. Economic (trade in industry, commercial, money, cost effectiveness, meeting their in-house needs.) Philosophical (personal, communities beliefs.) Condition of the Church: Paralyzed and confused: Torn by division and uncertainty. Withdrawn into ecclesiastical ghetto. Occupied with its own internal affairs. Unconcerned and irrelevant to the deepest needs of those around us. However, the 21 st century church could be the greatest moment of the church. The church is on fertile ground for evangelism. 6 Some Reasons You're Not Losing Weight Excerpts Submitted By: Sister Shonnette Carraway, RN New Greenleaf Church of Christ, DOC Goldsboro, NC Even if you follow a fitness routine and you often choose healthier foods, you may not be seeing the weight come off the way you hope. Here are some reasons why you re not losing weight. You Don't Drink Water Besides keeping you hydrated, drinking water on the regular, can aid with weight loss. Filling up on water before a meal helps encourage portion control, and eating foods that contain a lot of water (like fruits and veggies) will fill you up faster, causing you to eat less. A small study even found that drinking cool water can speed up metabolism and discourage cravings for sugary drinks like soda and juice. Add lemon, orange, lime, strawberries, blueberries, or other fruit for flavor to give your water a healthy kick. You Think Walking Your Dog Is Enough A 15-minute stroll is better than nothing, but don't expect to see dramatic weight-loss results. You've got to kick it up a notch - big time - and do at least 30 minutes a day of heart-pumping exercise. Big calorie and fat burners include running, bike riding, interval training, hiking, and circuit training. You Overeat Healthy Foods Nuts, avocados, whole wheat pasta, olive oil, and dark chocolate are all natural and healthy, but they aren't void of calories. You still need to watch how much you eat of the good stuff. For example, avocado offers a ton of health benefits, but an entire fruit is over 200 calories. You Exercise With an Empty Stomach If you regularly exercise without eating first, you should reconsider: when you work out on an empty stomach, research shows that the calories burned come from muscle, not fat. Since muscle burns more calories than fat, the more muscle mass you have, the better it is for weight loss. Not only will fueling your body help you avoid losing muscle, but also, you'll have more energy to push yourself through your workout. You Don't Cut Your Food Something as simple as slicing up your dinner can be helpful for your overeating woes. Cutting food into tiny pieces may seem slightly childish, but studies show that humans find smaller portions more satisfying. Health & Nutrition You Only Do Cardio If you live on the treadmill but never lift a pound, then you're missing out on one of the most important pieces of the fitness puzzle. Not only does weight training prevent injury by strengthening the joints, but it also builds muscle mass and increases metabolic rate. Bonus: thanks to a revved-up metabolism, you'll keep burning calories long after you've slipped off your sneakers. Just lift a gallon of water up & down, use can goods, or other household items. You Leave Out Entire Food Groups Giving up entire food groups can lead to a nutritional deficiency - not to mention trigger major cravings for whatever food has been cut. Rather than, say, eliminating all carbohydrates, focus on whole grains and remember to monitor portion control. Usually it's the extra servings that add to your waistline, not the pasta itself. You Don't Sleep Enough Making time for your workouts can mean less time for sleep, but it's important to get enough rest if you're trying to lose weight. You need extra energy to keep up with your exercise routine, and skimping on sleep can affect your body's ability to control its appetite: not enough shut-eye increases appetitestimulating hormones. You Don't Get Enough Veggies Eating five to seven servings of fruits and veggies a day is important for everyone, but dieters who go heavy on the produce are more likely to lose and keep the weight off, since a diet full of plant-based foods offers a greater variety of nutrients with fewer calories - and all that fiber keeps the body feeling fuller longer. You Eat While Standing Up Standing at the fridge or the counter to chow down isn't saving time or energy and can lead to mindless eating. It's best to designate time for snacking and meals that's set apart from other activities. You Wear Clothes That Are Too Big Loose clothes are comfy, but they cover up the body and allow you to forget what you look like, which can work against your fitness motivation. Then you may find your body stretching to fill the clothes. Instead, opt for clothes that have a more fitted silhouette to help give you a sense of your body image. Or better yet, start the day in your gym outfit to inspire you to do something active. 6

7 Health & Nutrition Cont d You're Sort of on a Diet Whether you're on Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, or your own diet-and-exercise plan, you can't do it half-heartedly and expect to see results. Stay committed to your plan, or you'll see the pounds stay on your body instead of dropping from the scale. You're Addicted to Condiments and Toppings A salad is one of the healthiest meals you can have, but when you top it with bacon bits, goat cheese, nuts, dried fruits, and ranch dressing, you can double the calorie amount in a flash. Be aware of how many calories your favorite salad extras add on. For instance, 10 croutons add an easy 100 calories. You Skip Breakfast Skipping breakfast may seem like a great way to save calories, but your body will actually hold on to fat because it thinks it's being starved. Keep in mind that people who eat breakfast regularly lose more weight, so make sure to eat breakfast each morning to jump-start your metabolism. Don't just grab anything: include protein to give yourself sustainable energy and fiber to fill you up for hours. You Don't Practice Portion Control When it comes to a balanced diet, we know that portion control is one of the keys to success. Keep measuring cups and spoons on hand to make sure your serving sizes are appropriate, and learn how to give your body the "I'm full" signal in order to help you drop the fork when the time is right and move on with your day. As soon as you finish eating, get up from the table and put the food away. Sitting around talking with food looking at you will start you up on nibbling. You Eat Without Thinking Aligning mealtime with a screen like your computer or the TV can hurt your weight-loss goals. Designating a special time for meals without distractions will help you connect to your food and, as a result, eat less. Sometimes you don't even realize how much you're scarfing when your mind is somewhere else. Do NOT eat in bed. Relaxing, TV watching, and nibbling will equal additional calories. You Still Drink Soda Soda offers literally no nutritional benefits, and continuing to drink the beverage is sabotaging your weight-loss goals--even if you only drink diet. Studies have shown that individuals who drink two diet sodas a day or more had waistlines that were 500 percent larger than the nondrinkers. You Don't Eat Enough Don't starve yourself to save calories for later. It'll not only mess up your metabolism, and by dinnertime, that famished feeling will likely cause you to eat more than you would if you weren't starving. Not only is starving yourself not sustainable for continued weight loss, but also, limiting yourself to too-small portions can lead to excess snacking between mealtimes. You Don't Leave Time For Fun Since stress is shown to cause weight gain by triggering the body to eat more - especially foods high in sugar and fat -- make sure you give yourself time to relax and unwind. And it's an added bonus that so many fun activities (like dancing, hiking, gardening, and shopping) are already natural calorie-burners! You Overindulge in Low-Fat Foods Going for foods with a lower calorie count can be deceiving, since many times they're filled with extra sodium, sugar, or chemical additives to make up for the ingredients the company has removed or decreased. Not only are these light versions less nutritious, but they also end up tasting "lighter," leading you to eat more. You'll probably end up consuming more calories than you would if you just ate a regular-sized portion of the real thing. You're Always Dining Out Hitting your favorite restaurant is a great way to unwind, but you're more likely to indulge in a huge meal complete with appetizers, drinks, fried foods, and dessert. Calorie counts are also a mystery, since many foods aren't labeled. Don t try to use up all the free coupons on those unhealthy choices. Give them away. Bless someone else while you take care of your body. If you don't want to give up your nights out, then split a meal with a friend, order healthy options like salads and grilled chicken, and sip water instead of wine, soda, or sweet tea. Stay away from buffet meals. You ll try to eat your money s worth and that s a no-no. Remember, take care of your body cause that s the only one you have on earth. 7

9 Missionary Convention April 20, 2016 To All Goldsboro-Raleigh District Assembly Local Church Pastors: Thank you for supporting the Flint Water Project. The GRDA Missionary Convention in collaboration with the GRDA Board of Elders led the GRDA in delivering the first truck of water to the residents of Flint, Michigan. We were so blessed to have the physical and financial support from local churches. This will be our main project for the year. We are asking for donations to purchase more water as we can buy in bulk cheaper and that will eliminate our loading problem not having manpower to load the truck. When we buy, we can drive up to the dock and the water is loaded. Thank you again for your total contributions of approximately $6, with three additional commitments. All donations, in any amount are acceptable as each cent will help to achieve our goal. May HIS awesome blessings continue to overflow. Yours in Christ, Shirley C. Howard Elder Shirley C.
