Welcome to Trinity Church Welcome to Trinity Presbyterian Church! May you experience a strong and loving welcome. All of us have this in common: we need God s grace. Grace is not earned or deserved but comes freely through God s gift of His Son Jesus Christ. We desire for you to find this grace and to live in its power. Nursery Discipleship, then, is not essentially a matter of how we should conduct ourselves. It is not chiefly a matter of moral decision, but it is more fundamentally a matter of Christ s exposure and transformation of our selfperception and God-perception. - Hans F. Bayer, A Theology of Mark If you have any questions about our church or Christianity or specific needs we can pray for, please contact me, Pastor Todd, at or by at todd@trinitychurchkailua.org. Nursery The nursery is located in the building next to the sanctuary and is divided into two age groups: infants and toddlers. Parents can drop off their children at 9:45 and can pick them up at the end of the service. Children s Instruction Children ages 4-9 are dismissed halfway through the service to Children s Instruction which includes Bible stories and application of God s Word to real life. They meet in the Education Building. They return to the sanctuary for communion at the end of the service. CONNECT Fellowship Groups Communities dedicated to helping you connect with others and grow spiritually. 4 Advent Reading & Candle Lighting Minister: We light these candles as a sign of the coming light of Christ. Advent means coming. We are preparing for the full coming of God s kingdom: Reader: The nations shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. from Isaiah 2:4, NRSV Reader: The wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them. Isaiah 11:6, NRSV ALL: The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad, the desert shall rejoice and blossom; like the crocus it shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice with joy and singing. Isaiah 35:1-2, NRSV Reader: The Lord will give you a sign. Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel ( God is with us ). from Isaiah 7:14, NRSV Call to Worship* Psalm 51 and Psalm 36:7-9 Pastor Todd Minister: Let us worship the triune God! Lord, open our lips! People: And our mouth shall declare your praise. Minister: Praise be to the Father, the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. How precious is your steadfast love, O God! People: ALL: The children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of your wings. We feast on the abundance of your house, and you give us drink from the river of your delights. For with you is the fountain of life; in your light do we see light. Prayer of Adoration* Pastor Todd
Song of Praise* I Saw Three Ships Words: Traditional English carol Music: Traditional English melody Tune: I SAW THREE SHIPS
Confessing Our Sins based on Hebrews 4:14,16; Isaiah 53 Todd Capen Minister: Since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and grace to help in time of need. People: We confess that we have given into hopelessness and despair. We have believed the lie that you have forgotten us. We have not run to your son, Jesus Christ, but have instead turned our backs on the promises you have made to us. Minister: Remind us that you have borne our griefs and carried our sorrows. People: We confess that we have ignored the suffering of our brothers and sisters, of our neighbors, and of the entire world. We have chosen civility instead of engagement. We have not listened to the prodding of the Holy Spirit. Minister: Point us to your Son and send your Holy Spirit to comfort us. People: Come, Lord Jesus. Time for Silent Prayers of Confession Assurance of Pardon in the Gospel based on Psalm 34 Minister: If you have confessed your sins in Jesus name, you are forgiven. People: We sought the Lord, and he answered us and delivered us from all our fears. Those who look to him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed. Minister: The poor man cried, and the Lord heard him and saved him out of all his troubles. People: The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him and delivers them. Minister: The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. People: The Lord redeems the life of his servants; none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.
Song of Thanksgiving* What Child is This? Words by William C. Dix, 1865 Music: English melody, ca. 16th c. Tune: GREENSLEEVES Parents, please send your children to meet Julie Keithley in the back of the sanctuary to line up for offertory at the end of the song.
Congregational Prayer Praying for Small Groups James 3:17-18 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace for those who make peace. Prayer will conclude with the Lord s Prayer All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Worshipping God With Our Gifts Children s Choir Carols Visitors, please do not feel obligated to give unless the Lord leads you to do so. Please feel welcome to use this time to worship either through singing or through reflective meditation. Away in a Manger Go Tell It On the Mountain Prayer for The Church s Children Children ages 4-9 are dismissed for Children s Instruction. Parents, you are always welcome to have your children stay with you throughout the service.
Scripture Reading* Psalm 24 Pastor Todd [1] The earth is the LORD's and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein, [2] for he has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers. [3] Who shall ascend the hill of the LORD? And who shall stand in his holy place? [4] He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully. [5] He will receive blessing from the LORD and righteousness from the God of his salvation. [6] Such is the generation of those who seek him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob. Selah [7] Lift up your heads, O gates! And be lifted up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. [8] Who is this King of glory? The LORD, strong and mighty, the LORD, mighty in battle! [9] Lift up your heads, O gates! And lift them up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. [10] Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory! Selah Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. Gloria Patri* Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, World without end. Amen, Amen.
Today s Message Series: Advent Through the Eyes of the Psalms Pastor Todd Just in Time for Christmas: A Double Crisis Psalm 24 Today s Big Question: Where did you develop your self understanding?
Confession of Faith* from Westminster Larger Catechism Pastor Todd Q. 36 Who is the Mediator of the covenant of grace? A. The only Mediator of the covenant of grace is the Lord Jesus Christ, who, being the eternal Son of God, of one substance and equal with the Father, in the fullness of time became man, and so was and continues to be God and man, in two entire distinct natures, and one person, forever. The Celebration of the Sacrament of the Lord s Supper Minister: People: Minister: People: Minister: People: Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died! Christ has risen! Christ is coming again! Praise to you, Lord Jesus: Dying your destroyed our death. rising you restored our life. Lord Jesus, come in glory. According to his commandment: We remember his death, we proclaim his resurrection, we await his coming in glory. Minister: Christ the bread of life: People: When we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim your death, Lord Jesus, until you come in glory. Blessing by the Minister As Paul said to the Corinthians, so I say to you, Christ the Passover lamb is sacrificed for us. Let us keep the feast! Words of Institution
Communion at Trinity Who is invited to take part? All baptized believers who have professed their faith before the leadership of a Bible believing congregation that teaches the Christian faith in terms of faith alone in Christ alone through grace alone are invited to join us at the Lord s Table today. We ask that children wait to partake in the Lord s Supper until they have met with the Elders and professed faith publicly. What if I am not ready? If you or your children are not ready to partake in the Lord s Supper, you are still invited to come forward and ask the Elders to pray for you. You may also remain in your seat to sing, pray, or meditate. What is the process? We dismiss by rows and come forward, beginning with the middle sections, then moving to the outer sections. With the elements of the Supper in hand, return to your seat and take the elements when you are ready. As others go forward, we encourage you to sing, pray, or meditate on the finished work of Christ. If you have difficulty coming forward please notify one of the ushers and the elements will be brought to you. Wine is served in the inner rings; grape juice is in the outer ring. There are gluten-free crackers If you are not able to partake in the Lord s Supper today, please use this time to meditate on one of the following prayers: Prayer of Searching for Truth: Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth and the life. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and leads to the life that you promise. Amen. Prayer of Believing in Jesus: Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you, I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared to hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as my savior. Amen. Prayer of Struggling Against Sin: Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my needs, and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely to me, and run with perseverance the race that you have set before me, looking only to you, the pioneer and champion of my faith. Amen.
Song of Communion O Come All Ye Faithful Words attributed to John F. Wade, 1751; tr. Frederick Oakeley, 1841 Music attributed to John F. Wade, 1751 Tune: ADESTE FIDELIS
