4 The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist Stewardship of the Earth - As Christians, we believe that the earth is entrusted to our faithful stewardship. We are not its owners, but its caretakers on behalf of God. How can I be a good steward? How Can I Reduce Garbage? The mantra of recycling is Reduce, Re-use, Recycle. One way we can help the environment is to reduce the amount of waste we produce. This eliminates the need to recycle it and prevents it from ending up in a landfill. Here are some things you can do to reduce garbage: Use a reusable lunch bag or box, you won t need to throw away a paper bag every day! When you make a purchase, don t take a bag unless you absolutely need one. Rent things you use infrequently instead of purchasing them. Use cloth instead of paper napkins. Use a sponge or cloth instead of paper towels. Look for items that use little or no packaging. Use reusable plastic containers for food instead of plastic bags. Use plates, cups, and utensils that can be washed instead of ones you throw away. Avoid buying foods in single serving packages. Serving the Poor in Our Midst Each day, numerous people come to the rectory office seeking assistance. Through your generosity, and with the assistance of the workers at the Bp. Cosgrove Center, we are able to fill some of their needs. Listed below is a report on the assistance the Cathedral has offered this past month, and on your generosity in support of these efforts. April Donations St. Vincent de Paul Fund...$3, Cosgrove Center...$ April Assistance Expenses Greyhound transport for stranded... $ Rent / Utility Assistance...$1, Emergency... $ ID Assistance $ Total 1, Cleveland, Ohio A Community of Justice & Love Ohio State Issue 1 - There is one statewide issue on the May 8, 2018 ballot. Issue 1 is a constitutional amendment creating a bipartisan, public process for drawing Ohio congressional Districts. The Catholic Conference of Ohio has taken a supportive position on this issue. We offer these reflections as an aid to one s discernment process. State Issue 1 creates a bipartisan, public process for drawing Congressional districts. The proposed Constitutional Amendment would: End the partisan process for drawing congressional districts and replace it with a process with the goals of promoting bipartisanship, keeping local communities together, and having district boundaries that are more compact. Ensure a transparent process by requiring public hearings and allowing public submission of proposed plans. Require the General Assembly or the Ohio Redistricting Commission to adopt new congressional districts by a bipartisan vote for the plan to be effective for the full 10- year period. Require that if a plan is adopted by the General Assembly without significant bipartisan support, it cannot be effective for the entire 10-year period and must comply with explicit anti-gerrymandering requirements. Legislative districts should be fairly established, facilitate active citizen participation, assure effective accountability and accessibility to both voters and elected officials, and ensure the common good of all in society. Issue 1 provides a prudentially viable process for achieving these goals. The Catholic Bishops of Ohio support passage of Issue 1. PIC Collection - Our next Personal Items Collection (PIC) for those who find themselves homeless or on the fringe of society will take place the weekend of May 19/20. With the changes in climate, come different challenges. The guests of Cosgrove urgently need underwear and socks for men and women. Always at the top of the list are such items as razors, shaving cream, moisturizers, sun screen, soaps, and shampoos. When you are out and about doing your shopping, please remember our less fortunate brothers and sisters. Also, for those traveling, the travel size toiletries are so helpful. To quote Mother Teresa, I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples. Let s all create some ripples. Human Trafficking - May - Be aware that online technologies give traffickers the ability to exploit a greater number of victims and advertise their services globally. Social media opens the door for predators to gain access to your child. U.S. Catholic Sisters Against Human Trafficking. <sistersagainsttrafficking.org>

The Gospel according to John 15:9-17 People: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Homily Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, (All bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to udge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. 9 Easter VI 6 May 2018 The Office of Catechetical Services Collection - Next weekend is the annual Diocesan collection for the Office of Catechetical Services, taken up in all the parishes to support their many ministries. The Office of Catechetical Services focuses on supporting and enhancing the catechetical initiative (PSR programs) throughout the Diocese and supports faith formation for all including adult faith formation, catechetical leader training and catechist formation for teachers of religion, media literacy, and the Newman Campus Ministry program. Please be generous to this Ministry that touches so many lives in the Diocese of Cleveland. Morning Prayer Groups - Please consider oining our weekly gatherings from 6:30-7:00 am in the Lower Sacristy of the Cathedral. Using the scriptures for the coming Sunday, these groups share their faith and some fellowship over a cup of coffee. The women s group gathers on Tuesdays, and the men s group on Fridays. Just show up at the Lower Sacristy, or contact the parish office with inquiries. Centering Prayer is a spiritual practice of our Catholic contemplative tradition that opens us more deeply to a relationship with God in faith and intimacy. Our group meets on Monday evenings from 6:30-8:00 pm in the Lower Sacristy. Tying the Knot? - For baptized Catholics, marriage is a Sacrament that is best celebrated in the home church of the bride or the groom. For weddings at the Cathedral, a six-month minimum period of preparation is required. This preparation includes a Pre-Cana class or retreat, the Prepare and Enrich Marriage Preparation instrument, and liturgical planning. Those who are not parishioners of the Cathedral may celebrate their weddings in the Cathedral; however, those are exceptional cases and must be discussed with the parish staff. Fr. Sean Ralph can assist anyone interested in planning a wedding. Electronic Newsletter & Magazine - Stay informed with the latest Catholic news from the Diocese of Cleveland. You may also subscribe to the Northeast Ohio Catholic e-newsletter, the free, weekly, electronic newsletter of the Diocese of Cleveland. Thank your mother or stepmother for the love and care she has given you to improve your character. Charitable Giving Ideas - Will you have increased income as a result of the new tax changes? Perhaps you can consider increasing your offertory contribution to our parish. Changes in the tax law kept in place several popular and attractive charitable gifting options. Gifting appreciated stock (held more than 1 year) to our parish may allow you to deduct the stock s full value and bypass capital gains tax. Also, if you are 70 ½ or older, you may be able to reduce your taxable income this year with a gift made directly from your IRA to our parish. Talk to your advisors and IRA administrator for more information, and to be sure that a gift is made directly from an IRA to a qualified charity such as our parish. Questions? Contact our parish office at You are also welcome to contact Mary Lou Ozimek of the Catholic Community Foundation at x4070 or via at <mozimek@catholiccommunity.org>. 10 In Our Diocesan Community Cleveland, Ohio Mercedarian Jubilee Door & Plenary Indulgence - As part of the celebration to mark the 800th Anniversary of the Mercedarian Order, His Eminence, Cardinal Mauro Piacenza, the Maor Penitentiary of the Church, acting in the name of Pope Francis, issued a special blessing and plenary indulgence.
