Welcome to worship! Last week, our Bible-in-a-Year readings introduced us to the person of Job. The Bible describes Job as a righteous man with a large family and great wealth. All of this is taken from him. From Job s perspective, there is no reason for the calamity he suffered. But the reader of Job knows that there is a purpose, a divine purpose behind the suffering Job endured. The suffering Job endured was real. The pain he felt was tremendous. His loss, unfathomable. Yet Job does not turn his frustration or anger outward at God. For those of us who can identify with Job, such a response is all but impossible. Our natural reaction when calamity hits is the look at the One who could have prevented it and say: where were you? Only you could have prevented this from happening! For those of us who know and believe the Gospel, we expect God to protect and provide for us above what we can ask for and imagine. When we perceive that God is holding back his gracious provision and blessings from our lives, we get upset because we have come to know God as one who likes to give gifts. However, in those moments of calamity, it is important for us to remember that God has already done more to undo the tragedies we experience and comfort us in our grief than we deserve or need. God the Father watched His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, die on a cross so that we need not fear death; God the Father raised His Son from the dead so that, for us, death will not be the end. The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ shows us that God is never the problem and always the solution to our troubles, tragedies and calamities. -Pastor Duncan Rev. 4 The Divine Service The Prelude (Please take a moment to fill out the Attendance books. Thank you!!) Introduction to Worship and Announcements Opening Hymn: Jesus Has Come and Brings Pleasure 533 The Invocation Confession of Sins In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. (Matthew 28:18-20) (Hebrews 10:22) If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Silence for reflection and self-examination Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen 4

Absolution Spoken by the Pastor Amen. (John 20:19-23) Response to Absolution: This Is the Feast 155 Refrain: This is the feast of victory of our God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Worthy is Christ, the Lamb who was slain, whose blood set us free to be people of God. Refrain. Power, riches, wisdom, and strength, and honor, blessing, and glory are His. Refrain. Sing with all the people of God, and join in the hymn of all creation: Blessing, honor, glory, and might be to God and the Lamb forever. Amen. Refrain. For the Lamb who was slain has begun His reign. Refrain. The Service of the Word The First Lesson: Job 1:1-12 There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job, and that man was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil. There were born to him seven sons and three daughters. He possessed 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, and 500 female donkeys, and very many servants, so that this man was greatest of all the people of the east. His sons used to go and hold a feast in the house of each one on his day, and they would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. And when the days of the feast had run their course, Job would send and consecrate them, and he would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, It may be that my children have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus Job did continually. Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them. The LORD said to Satan, From where have you 5

come? Satan answered the LORD and said, From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it. And the LORD said to Satan, Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil? Then Satan answered the LORD and said, Does Job fear God for no reason? Have you not put a hedge around him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. But stretch out your hand and touch all that he has, and he will curse you to your face. And the LORD said to Satan, Behold, all that he has is in your hand. Only against him do not stretch out your hand. So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD. (Please stand) The Prayer of the Church Lord, in your mercy. Hear our prayer. (Please be seated) The Second Lesson: Job 1:13-22 Now there was a day when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother s house, and there came a messenger to Job and said, The oxen were plowing and the donkeys feeding beside them, and the Sabeans fell upon them and took them and struck down the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you. While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you. While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, The Chaldeans formed three groups and made a raid on the camels and took them and struck down the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you. While he was still speaking, there came another and said, Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother s house, and behold, a great wind 6

came across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young people, and they are dead, and I alone have escaped to tell you. Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head and fell on the ground and worshiped. And he said, Naked I came from my mother s womb, and naked shall I return. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD. In all this Job did not sin or charge God with wrong. The Collection of the Offering The Third Lesson: Job 2:1-10 Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came along with them to present himself before the LORD. And the LORD said to Satan, From where have you come? Satan answered the LORD and said, From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down in it. And the LORD said to Satan, Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil? He still holds fast his integrity, although you incited me against him to destroy him without reason. Then Satan answered the LORD and said, Skin for skin! All that a man has he will give for his life. But stretch out your hand and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse you to your face. And the LORD said to Satan, Behold, he is in your hand; only spare his life. So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and struck Job with loathsome sores from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. And he took a piece of broken pottery with which to scrape himself while he sat in the ashes. Then his wife said to him, Do you still hold fast your integrity? Curse God and die. But he said to her, You speak as one of the foolish women would speak. Shall we receive good from God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this Job did not sin with his lips. (Please stand) 7

The Creed: Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. (Please be seated) The Fourth Lesson: Job 42:1-6 Then Job answered the LORD and said, I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted. Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge? Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know. Hear, and I will speak; I will question you, and you make it known to me. I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you; therefore I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes. (please stand) The Alleluia and Verse 156 Alleluia. Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia, alleluia. 8

The Holy Gospel, according to St. Luke the 13 th chapter. Glory to thee, O Lord. The Gospel Lesson: Luke 13:1-5 There were some present at that very time who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. And he answered them, Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered in this way? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them: do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. (Please be seated) The Sermon Hymn: The King of Love My Shepherd Is 709 Sermon (Please stand) The Service of the Sacrament This morning we looked at the story of Job, a righteous man who suffered unimaginable loss and pain. It is hard to believe in a God we cannot see. It is even harder to believe in a good and gracious God during life s difficult seasons. But our Lord does not leave us as orphans. He comes to us this morning with his body and blood to reassure us of his love and forgiveness. He comes to us to reassure us that he will never leave us nor forsake us; especially in the difficult times that test our faith. Therefore, with all boldness and confidence, we can say: the Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray: 9

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. The Words of Institution The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you. The Sharing of the Peace The Agnus Dei (Lamb of God) 163 Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; grant us peace, grant us peace. (Please be seated until it is your time to commune.) The Distribution We welcome to the Lord s Table all who have been baptized in the name of the Triune God, can examine themselves spiritually and believe they receive the true body and blood of the Lord Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins and as a profession of their faith. If you hold a profession of faith that differs from that of our congregation, please speak to the Pastor before the start of the service before communing. We believe the body and blood of Christ are truly present in the bread and wine. We believe Christ offers the forgiveness of sins in the Lord s Supper, but that the Lord s Supper is not necessary for salvation. We believe the Lord s Supper remembers the death of Christ and proclaims his death until he returns. We believe the Lord s Supper is a statement of unity in the body of Christ; we do not believe it creates that unity. During the distribution, you are encouraged to sing the Distribution Hymns, pray, or meditate on the words this is my body this is my blood, given for you. The cups at the center of the Individual Communion tray contain diluted wine for those with alcohol sensitivities. 10

These eyes have seen salvation s dawn, This child so long foretold. This is the Savior of the world, the Gentiles promised light, God s glory dwelling in our midst, the joy of Israel. With saints of old, with saints to come, to You we lift our voice; To Father, Son and Spirit blest be honor, love, and praise. Benediction The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace.
