Those times can feel like they will last forever and that there is no way out. It s in those times that God puts people into our lives to be his hands and feet, to walk with us and help carry our burdens. Stephen Ministry exists to provide Christ-centered care for people going through hard times. If you would be interested in either becoming a Stephen Minister, or if you would like to explore the option of having a Stephen Minister, please contact Pastor Duncan. Your conversation and involvement with Stephen Ministry will be completely confidential. OKTOBERFEST is scheduled for the 8 th of September. WOMENS BIBLE STUDY FALL KICK-OFF Will be meeting on Tuesday evenings this fall from 7:45-9:00 PM. This will be a great study for all women, whether you are seasoned in studying God s Word or brand new to digging into the Bible, please consider making this study part of your week. 3 Welcome to worship! This week s memory passage, 1 Timothy 3:1-7 explains the qualifications for someone seeking the Pastoral Office. Vicar David can tell you that at the Seminary this is one of the most talked about and pondered texts in the whole Bible. So why is it important for us to (attempt to) memorize it? It is important for us to know that the Pastoral Office is not something that anyone should be tossed into or should pursue. And while God-given talents and abilities are very important when deciding on a vocation, moral uprightness is also a key element to this particular vocation. But I don t want to bore you this morning talking about my job. (Even though I think we will briefly touch on the role of the Pastoral Office and give you some food for thought on the eligibility requirements because there is so much confusion in the church today.) Instead, I want to talk about Christian Vocation in general. You see, it s too easy for Pastors, other professionals, and people with all kinds of various jobs to get a big head when it comes to what they do, how much they make, how many people answer to them, and their overall status in the community based on what they do. But it s not just people who work who too easily think more highly of themselves than they should. The right shoes, cell phone, game console, car, neighborhood, country club, square footage, counter-top material, vacation spot, season ticket seats, degree, boyfriend, girlfriend, team, GPA, ERA, OPS, PPG, SAT score, ACT score, or a million other things can lead us to think more highly than we ought to. For behind every calling, vocation, material possession, blessing and status are the words of Christ: IF ANYONE would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life would lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. We have been given all things in Christ, yet we are not too good for anything. We have been seated in the heavenly realms with Christ and promised eternal glory, yet it is our daily task to carry our cross and live as Christ did. We have been blessed beyond measure in ways we cannot fathom, but we do not use these blessings to advance ourselves, but in loving service to our neighbor to the glory of Christ. God bless your time at Zion this morning as you hear again the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, receive his gifts, and leave your sins at the foot of his cross. Rev. Amen. Our Gospel Lesson for this morning tells us that we are to deny ourselves and follow Christ. But the sad reality is that we have spent the last week approving of ourselves and sanctioning our behaviors and attitudes, making excuses for what God calls sin. This morning, God calls us to leave our pride at the door and our sins at the cross. Lord Jesus Christ, the suffering servant who gave his life as a ransom for many, you have commanded me in your steadfast loving kindness to deny myself and follow you. This I have failed to do, and have instead lived to please and promote myself. Forgive my sinful ways and lead me to see the wisdom in living like you, trusting in you, and walking with you. Amen. And the word of the LORD was rare in those days; there was no frequent vision. At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his own place. The lamp of God had not gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was. Then the LORD called Samuel, and he said, Here I am! and ran to Eli and said, Here I am, for you called me. But he said, I did not call; lie down again. So he went and lay down. 5

6 And the LORD called again, Samuel! and Samuel arose and went to Eli and said, Here I am, for you called me. But he said, I did not call, my son; lie down again. Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, and the word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him. And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli and said, Here I am, for you called me. Then Eli perceived that the LORD was calling the young man. Therefore Eli said to Samuel, Go lie down, and if he calls you, you shall say, Speak, LORD, for your servant hears. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. And the LORD came and stood, calling as at other times, Samuel! Samuel! And Samuel said, Speak, for your servant hears. Then the LORD said to Samuel, Behold, I am about to do a thing in Israel at which the two ears of everyone who hears it will tingle. On that day I will fulfill against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end. And I declare to him that I am about to punish his house forever, for the iniquity that he knew, because his sons were blaspheming God, and he did not restrain them. Therefore I swear to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli s house shall not be atoned for by sacrifice or offering forever. Samuel lay until morning; then he opened the doors of the house of the LORD. And Samuel was afraid to tell the vision to Eli. But Eli called Samuel and said, Samuel, my son. And he said, Here I am. And Eli said, What was it that he told you? Do not hide it from me. May God do so to you and more also if you hide anything from me of all that he told you. So Samuel told him everything and hid nothing from him. And he said, It is the LORD. Let him do what seems good to him. And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground. And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established as a prophet of the LORD. 7 The New Testament Reading: 1 Timothy 3:1-7 The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God s church? He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil. (Please stand) People: Alleluia, Lord to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia! The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 16 th Chapter. People: Glory to you, O Lord. The Gospel Reading: Matthew 16:21-28 From that time on Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, Far be it from you, Lord! This shall never happen to you. But he turned and said to Peter, Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man. Then Jesus told his disciples, If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life would lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life? Or what shall a man give in return for his life? For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done. The Sermon Hymn: Hark, the Voice of Jesus Calling 826 Sermon (Please stand) The Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. The Distribution We welcome to the Lord s Table all who have been baptized in the name of the Triune God, can examine themselves spiritually and believe they receive the true body and blood of the Lord Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins and as a profession of their faith. If you hold a profession of faith that differs from that of our congregation, please speak to the Pastor before the start of the service before communing. We believe the body and blood of Christ are truly present in the bread and wine. We believe Christ offers the forgiveness of sins in the Lord s Supper, but that the Lord s Supper is not necessary for salvation. We believe the Lord s Supper remembers the death of Christ and proclaims his death until he returns. We believe the Lord s Supper is a statement of unity in the body of Christ; we do not believe it creates that unity.
