9 th Sunday After Pentecost July 29 th, 2012 Welcome to worship! Pastor, here we are in the middle of July. Faithfully doing our Bible-in-a- Year readings. We made it through the history books of 1 & 2 Samuel and 1 & 2 Kings. They were interesting sometimes hard to follow but interesting. But this week THIS WEEK you had us read 1 Chronicles 1-5 and 1 Chronicles 6-10 on back-to-back days. Do you know what s in those chapters? Did we do something wrong? Are we being punished for something we did? Chapter after chapter of names so-and-so-begat-soand-so. Really? Well in a word yes. But the good news is that you made it through. And while it was tempting to have one of the Elders read all those names in the genealogies of the first ahem several chapters of 1 Chronicles, I want to focus in a story from 2 Kings. In the passage we are looking at this morning, we will see the destruction of the Kingdom of Israel (not to be confused with the Kingdom of Judah). God allowed the Assyrians to destroy Israel because of Israel s unfaithfulness. In the New Testament lesson, we will see that religious apostasy is part of the devil s plan. And in the Gospel lesson, we will see Jesus teaching on the importance of remaining faithful. In all of these readings, the word of God is clear: idolatry has consequences. We rejoice that we have been called by name by the One True God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit and do not need to fear the punishments (temporal and eternal) that are visited on those who live in unbelief. -Pastor Duncan Rev. 4 The Divine Service The Prelude (Please take a moment to fill out the Attendance books. Thank you!!) Introduction to Worship and Announcements Opening Hymn: Lift High the Cross 837 The Invocation Confession of Sins In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. (Matthew 28:18-20) (Hebrews 10:22) Almighty and everlasting God, for my many sins I justly deserve eternal condemnation. In Your mercy You sent Your dear Son, my Lord Jesus Christ, who won for me forgiveness of sins and everlasting salvation. Grant me a true confession that, dead to sin, I may be raised up by Your life-giving absolution. Grant me Your Holy Spirit that I may be ever watchful and live a true and godly life in Your service; through Jesus Christ, my Lord. Amen. Silence for reflection and self-examination Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, but what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. 4
Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen Absolution Spoken by the Pastor Amen. (John 20:19-23) Response to Absolution: My Soul Rejoices 933 My soul rejoices, my spirit voices Sing the greatness of the Lord! For God my Savior Has shown me favor Sing the greatness of the Lord! With praise and blessing, join in confessing God, who is solely Mighty and holy O sing the greatness of God the Lord! His mercy surely shall rest securely on all who fear Him, love and revere Him O sing the greatness of God the Lord! His arm now baring, His strength declaring Sing the greatness of the Lord! The proud He scatters, their rule He shatters Sing the greatness of the Lord! Oppression halted; the meek exalted. Full are the hungry; empty the wealthy O sing the greatness of God the Lord! Here is the token all that was spoken to Abraham s offspring God is fulfilling O sing the greatness of God the Lord! The Prayer of the Church (Please be seated) Lord, in your mercy. Hear our prayer. The Baptism of Madison Killinger Daughter of Mark and Shelley Goddaughter of Michelle Killinger and Josh Trbovich 5
The Service of the Word The Old Testament Lesson: 2 Kings 17:6-18 In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria captured Samaria, and he carried the Israelites away to Assyria and placed them in Halah, and on the Habor, the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes. And this occurred because the people of Israel had sinned against the LORD their God, who had brought them up out of the land of Egypt from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods and walked in the customs of the nations whom the LORD drove out before the people of Israel, and in the customs that the kings of Israel had practiced. And the people of Israel did secretly against the LORD their God things that were not right. They built for themselves high places in all their towns, from watchtower to fortified city. They set up for themselves pillars and Asherim on every high hill and under every green tree, and there they made offerings on all the high places, as the nations did whom the LORD carried away before them. And they did wicked things, provoking the LORD to anger, and they served idols, of which the LORD had said to them, You shall not do this. Yet the LORD warned Israel and Judah by every prophet and every seer, saying, Turn from your evil ways and keep my commandments and my statutes, in accordance with all the Law that I commanded your fathers, and that I sent to you by my servants the prophets. But they would not listen, but were stubborn, as their fathers had been, who did not believe in the LORD their God. They despised his statutes and his covenant that he made with their fathers and the warnings that he gave them. They were after false idols and became false, and they followed the nations that were around them, concerning whom the LORD had commanded them that they should not do like them. And they abandoned all the commandments of the LORD their God, and made for 6
themselves metal images of two calves; and they made an Asherah and worshiped all the host of heaven and served Baal. And they burned their sons and their daughters as offerings and used divination and omens and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the LORD, provoking him to anger. Therefore the LORD was very angry with Israel and removed them out of his sight. None was left but the tribe of Judah only. The New Testament Lesson: Revelation 13:11-18 Then I saw another beast rising out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb and it spoke like a dragon. It exercises all the authority of the first beast in its presence, and makes the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose mortal wound was healed. It performs great signs, even making fire come down from heaven to earth in front of people, and by the signs that it is allowed to work in the presence of the beast it deceives those who dwell on earth, telling them to make an image for the beast that was wounded by the sword and yet lived. And it was allowed to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast might even speak and might cause those who would not worship the image of the beast to be slain. Also it causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave, to be marked on the right hand or the forehead, so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name. This calls for wisdom: let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and his number is 666. (please stand) The Alleluia and Verse 156 Alleluia. Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia, alleluia. The Holy Gospel, according to St. Matthew the 21 st chapter. Glory to thee, O Lord. 7
The Gospel Lesson: Matthew 21:33-41 Hear another parable. There was a master of a house who planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a winepress in it and built a tower and leased it to tenants, and went into another country. When the season for fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to get his fruit. And the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another. Again he sent other servants, more than the first. And they did the same to them. Finally he sent his son to them, saying, They will respect my son. But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and have his inheritance. And they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants? They said to him, He will put those wretches to a miserable death and let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. (Please be seated) The Children s Message The Sermon Hymn: Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer 918 Sermon (Please stand) The Creed: Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. 8
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. (Please be seated) The Collection of the Offering (Please stand) The Service of the Sacrament This morning, we looked the history of God s people turning from God and turning to idols. In Old Testament times as well as New, God s people are given to the empty allure of that which is not God. God, in his mercy, comes to us this morning with the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ to strengthen our faith and keep us in the one true faith. And so, as you are kept faithful by God, may the Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. The Words of Institution The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you. The Sharing of the Peace The Agnus Dei (Lamb of God) 163 Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; grant us peace, grant us peace. 9
(Please be seated until it is your time to commune.) The Distribution We welcome to the Lord s Table all who have been baptized in the name of the Triune God, can examine themselves spiritually and believe they receive the true body and blood of the Lord Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins and as a profession of their faith. If you hold a profession of faith that differs from that of our congregation, please speak to the Pastor before the start of the service before communing. We believe the body and blood of Christ are truly present in the bread and wine. We believe Christ offers the forgiveness of sins in the Lord s Supper, but that the Lord s Supper is not necessary for salvation. We believe the Lord s Supper remembers the death of Christ and proclaims his death until he returns. We believe the Lord s Supper is a statement of unity in the body of Christ; we do not believe it creates that unity. During the distribution, you are encouraged to sing the Distribution Hymns, pray, or meditate on the words this is my body this is my blood, given for you. The cups at the center of the Individual Communion tray contain diluted wine for those with alcohol sensitivities. Distribution Hymns Create in Me 956 O Gracious Lord, I Firmly Am Believing 635 Thy Body, Given for Me, O Savior 619 Jesus Christ, My Sure Defense 741 (Please stand) Post-Communion Canticle: Thank the Lord 164 Thank the Lord and sing His praise; tell everyone what He has done. Let all who seek the Lord rejoice and proudly bear His name. He recalls His promises and leads His people forth in joy With shouts of thanksgiving. Alleluia, alleluia. Benediction 10
The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace.
