2 ANNOUNCEMENTS October 2, 2011 The Altar Flowers have been given to the Glory of God by Frank & Dione Vallelunga in honor of their 18 th wedding anniversary and by Neil Ackerman. The Eternal Light is lit to the Glory of the God by Zion Lutheran Church. Food Bank Collection will be next Sunday, October 9 th. The item of the month is baking supplies. Thank you for your donations on September 11 th. During the September 17 th distribution, 95 families were assisted which included 37 children, 99 adults, and 41 of the elderly. Your participation in this vital ministry is appreciated. THE YOUTH AT ZION are once again invited to attend Tool Time, a youth ministry event hosted by the students of Concordia University in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Scheduled for the weekend of November 4-6, Tool Time is an inspiration for high school students to grow in and live out their faith through games, music, skits, speakers, a servant event, and more. The theme this year will be Unshaken, based on Hebrews 12: Transportation, dorm housing, meals, and a t-shirt are all provided for a cost of $50. Students are welcome to bring a friend! Zion will be participating in a FREE HAYRIDE on Saturday, October 22nd at 6:00 p.m. located at Simmons Farm. After the hayride, we will be enjoying hotdogs and marshmallows around a roaring bonfire. College Care Packages! If you have a child away at college please get their updated address to the church office by October 16th. We would like to send them a special care package from Zion to aid in their transition away from home. 2

3 Sixteenth Sunday After Pentecost October 2, 2011 Welcome to Zion Lutheran Church! For the last 9 months, we have been studying the Gospel of John. We have seen Jesus perform seven signs that point to his nature and power, his love for the common person and his authority and control over any situation. We have seen him teach repeatedly that he is from the Father and does the Father s will. And, lately, we have seen him proclaimed as the King of the Jews. All of this comes to a head this morning as the one who performed miracles for the benefit of others, represents God on earth, is the rightful king of God s people, and is in control of any and all situations voluntarily goes to the cross to die. In his crucifixion, Jesus does the polar opposite of what we would expect someone with his credentials and resume to do. He who became like us in every way (only without sin) suffered the consequences of what our thoughts, words, and deeds deserve. He suffered the punishment we deserve for our sins. And in the great exchange Jesus gives to us everything his perfect life and relationship with the Father entitle him to: honor, peace, and everlasting life. Amen. Confession and Absolution (Matthew 28:18-20) Admonition to confess our sins. Grant, merciful Lord, to your faithful people pardon and peace that they may be cleansed from all their sins and serve you with a quiet mind; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. The Service of the Word The Old Testament Lesson: Psalm 22:1-18 The crucifixion of the Messiah is prophesied. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning? O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer, And by night, but I find no rest. Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. In you our fathers trusted; they trusted, and you delivered them. To you they cried and were rescued; in you they trusted and were not put to shame. But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by mankind and despised by the people. All who see me mock me; they make mouths at me; they wag their heads; He trusts in the Lord; let him deliver him; let him rescue him, for he delights in him! 5

6 Yet you are he who took me from the womb; You made me trust in you at my mother s breasts. On you was I cast from my birth, and from my mother s womb you have been my God. Be not far from me, for trouble is near, and there is none to help. Many bulls encompass me; strong bulls of Bashan surround me; They open wide their mouths at me, like a ravening and roaring lion. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; My heart is like wax; it is melted within my breast; My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to my jaws; You lay me in the dust of death. For dogs encompass me; a company of evildoers encircles me; They have pierced my hands and my feet I can count all my bones They stare and gloat over me; they divide my garments among them, And for my clothing they cast lots. The New Testament Lesson: Acts 2:29-36 The gospel is preached for the first time. Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, The Lord said to my Lord, sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool. Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified. 6

7 The Holy Gospel, beginning in the 19 th Chapter of John. Glory to Thee, O Lord! The Gospel: John 19:16b-27 Jesus, the King of the Jews, is crucified. So they took Jesus, and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of the Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them. Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. Many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, Do not write, The King of the Jews, but rather, This man said, I am King of the Jews. Pilate answered, What I have written, I have written. When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom, so they said to one another, Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be. This was to fulfill the Scripture which says, They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots. So the soldiers did these things, but standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, Woman, behold your son! Then he said to the disciple, Behold, your mother! And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home. This is the Gospel of the Lord. (sing) Praise be to thee, O Christ! (Please be seated) 7

It is right to give him thanks and praise. It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to you, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who on this day overcame death and the grave and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify your glorious name, evermore praising you and saying: 8

9 Holy, holy, holy Lord God of power and might: Heaven and earth are full of Your glory. Hosanna. Hosanna. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. The Distribution We welcome to the Lord s Table all who have been baptized in the name of the Triune God, can examine themselves spiritually and believe they receive the true body and blood of the Lord Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins and as a profession of their faith. If you hold a profession of faith that differs from that of our congregation, please speak to the Pastor before the start of the service before communing. We believe the body and blood of Christ are truly present in the bread and wine. We believe Christ offers the forgiveness of sins in the Lord s Supper, but that the Lord s Supper is not necessary for salvation. We believe the Lord s Supper remembers the death of Christ and proclaims his death until he returns. 9

10 We believe the Lord s Supper is a statement of unity in the body of Christ; we do not believe it creates that unity. The three month Mortgage Campaign officially ended September 25th and the Council would like to Thank everyone for their prayerful support for the success of the effort and for those who were able to contribute! The final tally was an astonishing and historic $85,260 which in effect retires our mortgage as we make the last few monthly payments!!! The collective effort saw a high participation rate compared to past campaigns and we should all be thankful that our Lord has blessed our members in varying ways and to different levels of financial strength with the selfless generosity that such an effort took to make this mortgage a thing of the past. The sacrifice made in this worldly effort pales in comparison with the profound and blessed events of the Cross and the Sacrifice our Lord made on our behalf at Calvary. So, let us all feel good about our little victory and let us reflect upon the Victory of Life over Death as we move forward to work for the Great Commission in bringing the Good News of Saving Grace and news of the Salvation that was created by our Lord so that we might serve Him while we are here on Earth and join Him in Everlasting Life when we depart from this place. We have the answer to our Lord's idea of "success" in this effort! He has blessed this church with eternal Life through Faith. May God's "Blessing" go out to each and every one of the Members of Zion Lutheran Church. Your prayers were answered!!! Let's grow the Faith, Hope and Love together over the coming years. Our cup...runneth over! Mal. 3:10..."Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it." 11
