BOEHMS RD, WILLOW STREET, PA SECRETARY@BOEHMSUMC.ORG EASTERN PENNSYLVANIA CONFERENCE Mission ConneXion The following will be proposd at Annual Conference: The mission of the United Methodist Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. In order for each congregation to more effectively accomplish this mission all congregations in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference will participate in a grouping of 4 to 15 congregations called a Mission ConneXion. The Mission ConneXions will enable congregations to resource one another for ministry within the congregation growing disciples and mission beyond the congregation in the community making new disciples and transforming the community and world beyond. Each congregation will be invited to indicate the other congregations with whom they would like to be aligned. Each congregation will be represented on a Mission ConneXion Council by two lay representatives and their pastor. A Mission ConneXion Leader, lay or clergy, will be chosen by the District Superintendent in consultation with the Council. This Leader will preside at the Council meetings. The Mission ConneXion Leader will serve as a liaison between the District Superintendent and the ConneXion. The Leaders will receive special training and will assist congregations and pastors to become more vital and effective. The Leaders will be reimbursed for travel expenses. Each congregation will retain autonomy and may opt out of any joint mission, program, or training at their discretion. The Mission ConneXion is not intended to replace existing clergy groups, ecumenical councils or other associations of congregations or clergy. The District Superintendent will serve as the chief missional strategist of the district (Discipline paragraph 419.1). Four key roles for the DS will be: 1. Deployment of clergy for greatest effectiveness in our mission, 2. Training and support of Mission ConneXion Leaders, 3. Fostering collaboration among congregations to serve their mission field, and 4. Developing and maintaining structures of support and accountability for clergy and congregations. The plan, more fully described in Creating a Mission ConneXion 2013, is intended as a two year experiment and will be evaluated with recommendations presented to the 2015 annual conference.

4 NEW BIBLE READING PLAN Have you ever started to read the Bible, cover-to-cover, but stopped after a few days or a few weeks? Then consider reading the Bible with mutual encouragement from the Boehms congregation, weekly and monthly reminders, and both print and digital helps. This new Plan organizes biblical material into its chronological flow taking you through events and teachings in the rough order of how they happened or were penned. Exact dating of all materials or events isn t possible: This represents an attempt at the overall flow of the Bible s grand story. Some texts are placed topically. There are six readings for each week, leaving you room for catching up when needed. It was created by Dr. George Guthrie and can be found online at boehmsumc.org. The plan is available using the Youversion mobile app at reading-plans/64-readinggods-story. Below are important opportunities to serve: Financial Secretary (Approx 2 hours per week, can do from home) - An essential position. Nancy Karr has graciously served as interim Financial Secretary since Brenda McDonald fell ill. Deposits weekly offering, records giving, sends weekly summary for bulletin, generates annual giving statements, attends 6 Finance Team meetings a year. Coordinates Homebound Communion servants. Attends 6 Ministry Team meetings in a year. Please contact Sharon McCullough: ,sharon@mcbanner.com Offering Counter (Approx 4 hours per month, after Sunday worship) - Seeking two Offering Counters to join the existing two counters (Maxine Meck and Audrey Goss) so that schedules can be rotated either monthly or every two weeks. Counts money from offering plates, records on a form, places in a locked bag. Finance Secretary then double-checks the count before depositing. 5 What would the world do without tea! How did it exist? I am glad I was not born before tea. My hour for tea is half-past five, and my buttered toast waits for nobody. There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea.

6 May Breadbox Peter... spoke the name of Christ with great power and authority and without fear of the consequences. Peter knew the danger of preaching Jesus. He knew the hostility it could elicit. He knew that by doing the will of God and preaching he would be taking his life in his hands. Still he had no choice. He HAD to preach. He HAD to speak the name of Jesus.... He could do nothing else. After the things he had seen and heard after the powerful touch he had received from the Holy Spirit of God he felt compelled to preach the gospel. So Peter preached... and the whole world turned upside down! This is the kind of turnaround that occurs in the life of one touched by the Holy Spirit of God. When we have a genuine encounter with Jesus, when He transforms our hearts and minds and empowers us and emboldens us, we have no choice we MUST preach the gospel, we MUST speak the Word of God. (John Maxwell on Acts 3.) (Note: It is the ACTS of the Apostles, not the talk and planning of the Apostles. We Disciples must put what we have experienced into action, and then the Holy Spirit will turn this world upside down.) CIVIL WAR MEMORIAL RECOGNITION A two-part Memorial Day program will be held Sunday afternoon, May 19, at historic Boehm s Chapel, 13 West Boehm s Church Road, Willow Street, PA, to acknowledge the Civil War veterans buried in the adjoining cemetery. The program will begin at 3:00 p.m. inside the chapel with Flames Across the Susquehanna, a video-lecture by local author, Glenn Banner. Banner, a native of Columbia, PA, will use a visual presentation to highlight the account of the burning of the Columbia-Wrightsville Bridge. Written from a Christian perspective, Banner s book, Flames Across the Susquehanna, is related through the eyes of a teenage drummer boy serving in the 125 th PA Regiment. Union forces, aided by citizens of Columbia, destroyed the bridge, Sunday, June 28, 1863, to thwart Lee s Army of Northern Virginia from proceeding eastward and entering Lancaster County. Faced with the dilemma of being unable to cross the river, the troops were pulled back to regroup with General Lee and additional Confederate forces at the crossroads near Gettysburg. Following a question and answer session with Banner, the program will resume in the cemetery with a roll call of the Civil War veterans and placing of flags.
