5 Partners in Ministry: Family Biography The partner family for our build includes Nicole and her daughter Aubrey. Nicole shared the following so that we might get to know her better: My name is Nicole. I am currently 27 years old and I work as a dental assistant. My daughter s name is Aubrey and she attends John Wayland Elementary. Aubrey really enjoys going to school and learning! Her favorite subject is art class; she is very creative and loves to draw. In our free time, we are busy with Aubrey being on a travel soccer team; she also plays basketball in the winter. Aubrey plans on trying out for the swim team this summer for the Ashby Anaconda's. She really enjoys being in the water whether it is in a pool or at the beach. Aubrey and I enjoy spending as much time as we can outside when the weather is nice. My main focus at this point in my life is enjoying and watching the activities in which Aubrey is currently involved. Nothing gives me more joy than to watch her grow into a young lady and to provide the best life I can for her. When I have time for myself I do enjoy working out and focus on being healthy! Aubrey and I currently attend Divine Unity Community as our home church! I can truly say that God has blessed me with an incredible daughter and both of us with an amazing opportunity. We could not even begin to describe how thankful we are for you all as a church for choosing to be our house sponsor. We are looking forward to working with you all in this amazing journey and project! Partners in Ministry: Bridgewater Church of the Brethren and Central Valley Habitat for Humanity The Bridgewater Church of the Brethren (BWCOB) has been involved from the very beginning of Central Valley Habitat for Humanity (CVHfH), Harrisonburg and Rockingham County s local Habitat for Humanity affiliate. CVHfH grew out of the Bridgewater Interchurch Food Pantry, which met and still meets in the BWCOB building. Food Pantry volunteers became aware of the inadequate housing conditions of low-income families who came for food assistance. In 1987, a group which included members of BWCOB began to explore the need for affordable housing and the possibility of affiliating with Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for Humanity, an ecumenical Christian housing ministry, was then in its 11 th year of operation in the United States and several international locations. The Habitat model included a local board and volunteers affiliated with the parent group; non-discriminatory selection criteria; simple house design; home ownership through no-profit, nointerest loans; and construction by skilled and unskilled volunteers and by the selected family meeting their sweat equity requirement. By 1988, CVHfH was incorporated, approved by Habitat for Humanity as an affiliate, and broke ground on its first house. Since then BWCOB and our members have supported our Habitat affiliate in hundreds of ways: as Central Valley board members and officers; as committee members and volunteers, including volunteer construction supervisors and skilled subcontractors; as financial contributors, including members of the Carpenter s Club and Thousand Beacons of Light giving clubs and as supporters of the annual Habitat banquet; as CVHfH staff members; and our church as a Habitat Covenant Church, offering budgeted contributions and use of our building many times over the years.

6 Naming all the individuals who participated in Central Valley Habitat would take many pages, but here is a list of some persons and their past contributions to serving CVHfH: Naomi West, founding board member who wrote a history of CVHfH s first four years Bob Reeves, volunteer construction supervisor Eva Reeves, organizer of the Thousand Beacons of Light giving club Leroy Harsh, president of the CVHfH board Terry Slaubaugh, treasurer of the CVHfH board Betty Martin, president of the board and organizer of the regional meeting hosted by CVHfH in 1992 for affiliates in the Mid-Atlantic area Jim Benedict, president of the CVHfH board Burton Metzler, construction volunteer on first Bridgewater house Our congregation has also supported the activities of the Bridgewater College Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter. The students take spring break work camps to build or renovate Habitat houses in other parts of the country, as well as assisting the work of CVHfH. In 2001, BWCOB undertook the sponsorship of a Habitat house. Sponsoring a house means raising the funds for construction and providing the volunteers and volunteer support for building the house. That house was built in Bridgewater in partnership with the homeowner, Florencia Paz Rojas and her family. Jim and Joyce Benedict headed the church sponsorship committee, and Bob Reeves was construction supervisor. In 2007, BWCOB launched its second Habitat house sponsorship, this time by organizing a coalition of eight churches, called the Southwest Rockingham Housing Coalition, to build a duplex on Grace Chapel Road, north of Dayton. Charlotte Brazeau and Tim Kreps led the group and BWCOB provided the funds for one side of the duplex. Executive Director of CVHfH at the time was Claire Martindale, who served on the staff in Clarine Hays and Charmeigne Acevedo and their families were the Habitat partners who moved into the new homes, knowing that their house payments would help Habitat build more houses. In 2016 the BWCOB Board of Administration and Council approved sponsorship of another house with CVHfH, to be constructed in Sponsorship means that the church will provide $35,000 of the construction cost, as well as volunteers and volunteer support. In addition, we will provide an additional $3,500 for the tithe that CVHfH is committed to send to Habitat International for constructing homes in other countries. The tithe recognizes the fact that houses in a developing country can be built for one-tenth the cost of those in the U.S. Some of the funds for our church sponsorship have already been raised through memorial gifts and estate gifts of members who worked with Habitat during their lifetimes. Through December 2016, Central Valley Habitat has built 58 houses in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, with one more under construction. That means that the BWCOB sponsored house will be number 60 for the affiliate. At the same time, CVHfH has contributed a total tithe of $240,397 to Habitat for Humanity, which provided for more than 88 families housed in other parts of the world. Since its founding in 1976, Habitat for Humanity has grown to 1400 U.S. affiliates and 70 national organizations worldwide. Habitat has helped 6.8 million people around the globe improve their living conditions.
