May they continue to receive God s blessings and grace. Update From Kate Bell One of our parishioners on mission this year Hello to my wonderful ministry partners! I want to give you a brief update of my life as a NETter... so far. God made it clear to me that He needed me ministering to the youth of Minnesota this year by placing me on a parish team. Eight of the eleven NET teams will be traveling across the U.S. bringing the gospel to young people. One team will be in a high school in Minnesota for the entire year, and two teams will be at a parish for the year. My team will be spending our year at All Saints parish in Lakeville, MN and we are so excited! While all of us NETters are doing youth ministry this year, it looks drastically different for the parish and school teams. As a parish team, our ministry will be very relational. We will spend time with the youth in their element and on their turf forming relationships with them for days and weeks before we even bring up God and faith. Whereas, the traveling teams are spending one day at a parish and jumping right into the faith with youth. As a parish team, we are going to be blessed with the opportunity to see the fruit of our labor, so to speak, because we will be in the same community for an extended period of time. We are challenged to be on 24/7 because everyone in Lakeville will know that we are the NETters. we will be staying with host families for two to three weeks at a time, so we will be able to form relationships in that way as well, which is another blessing of being on a parish team. We arrived in Lakeville on October 1 to start our ministry. We are spending time getting to know the area, the parish staff, and our responsibilities. I ask that you continue to pray for me and my team. Please also pray for the All Saints community, the youth whom we will minister to, and all those in Lakeville who need to encounter the Lord this year. On behalf of Team 10, thank you so much for your support! You are in our prayers! Kate Bell High School Youth: Get Ready for the FiRE House! Have you seen the house on Wright Street with the purple shutters and door? That s FiRE House, and it s just for you! We ve been working hard to create a cool place for high school teens and have filled the house with bright colors, fun furniture, a big TV, WiFi, and we re almost ready to open! Please join us on Sunday, November 6 to come see! Fr. Mike will bless FiRE House after the 10:30 a.m. Mass, and we ll continue our Open House after the noon Mass. We ll have music and lite refreshments. Why FiRE House? It stands for Finding the Road to Emmaus. Reading the Emmaus story mentioned above will provide further explanation. FiRE House will be open exclusively to high schoolers. There will be hangout nights every Tuesday, 7:00-9:30 pm, when we will watch movies, listen to music, play games, have service activities and special holiday events. We re working on planning a Ravens party for Sunday, December 4. And we ll have drop in study times each Monday and Wednesday, 2:30 p.m. 5:00 pm for those who want a quiet, comfortable place to read, study, or do homework with your friends away from home. Other social events will happen at the house too! Hope to see you at FiRE House!
2 Adult Faith Opportunities For more information, contact Marie Dekowski, , ext. 126 The Mass In Scripture This book by Stephen J. Binz will be the focus of this Wednesday evening six-week study beginning October 19 at 7:00 pm in the Adult Education Center. The book reveals how our Catholic liturgy is profoundly rooted in the word of God. Using the new translation of the Mass, it demonstrates that attention to the biblical tradition is one of the hallmarks of the revised Roman Missal. This study is ideal for Catholics who desire a deeper understanding of the biblical roots of the Mass. Contact Marie Dekowski, , ext. 126 to register. One-Day Retreat Finding God in the Silence. To register or for additional information please contact Marie Dekowski, , ext. 126 or mdekowski@stmargaret.org. 2 From Father Mike Dear Friends, This week I am concluding the overview of the capital campaign that Archbishop O Brien has begun. In the last two columns, I have focused on the following purposes of this Archdiocesan campaign: Catholic Education, Catholic Charities, Priests Retirement and Vocations. Now I will cover the remaining needs that are part of this important campaign. Evangelization $3 million Our mission as a Church is to bring the message of Jesus Christ to everyone. This is essential to our baptismal calling and is what the word evangelization means. To do this effectively, we need to provide appropriate support and formation to the Church s ministers. Therefore, the proceeds of the campaign will be used to: Develop programs that will provide good theological and pastoral competency to our lay ministers, especially those serving in parishes. Enhance and strengthen key programs in the areas of Youth and Young Adult Ministry, Catechetical Ministry, Campus Ministry, etc. Implement current technology for delivering efficient and effective educational programs for ministers across the Archdiocese. The Cathedrals $7 million The Archdiocese of Baltimore has the historic Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in downtown Baltimore (America s first cathedral) and its Cathedral of Mary our Queen in north Baltimore City (the Phantom of the Opera Sunday, October 30 at 3:00 pm, Michael Britt will accompany Phantom of the Opera starring Lon Chaney at Saint Margaret church on our Moller Pipe Organ. Free will donation accepted. location of every Archdiocesan liturgy and event). Proceeds of the campaign will be used to: Pay down some or the entire remaining loan on the magnificent restoration of the Basilica which was designed by Benjamin Latrobe, the same architect who designed the U.S. Capitol. Assist with some needed repair to the 50 year-old Cathedral of Mary our Queen, especially with roof and stained glass repair. Parishes $20 million The purpose of the Archdiocesan capital campaign is primarily for Archdiocesanwide needs, things that are beyond the scope of any one parish and that we must do collectively as a total Archdiocese, 153 parishes. Nevertheless, the campaign structure or sharing formula also recognizes that parishes are the day-to-day heart and life of the Church. Therefore, significant funds will also come to all parishes including Saint Margaret - to support their capital needs. Summary of Archdiocesan Capital Campaign: Embracing Our Mission/ Shaping Our Future: Catholic Education $50 million Catholic Charities $10 million Priests Retirement $10 million Evangelization $ 3 Million Cathedrals $ 7 Million Parishes $20 Million Total Campaign Goal $100 Million Next week I will explain how these needs interface with our own parish needs and how together they will be addressed in a combined capital campaign. Father Mike On Monday evening, October 31 at 7:00 pm, Michael will also accompany Phantom of the Opera at Baker Memorial Chapel at McDaniel College in Westminster, MD. Michael has been invited to McDaniel College to help inaugurate the restoration of the historic Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ in Baker Memorial Chapel. M

4 Embracing the New Translation The Power of I Every Sunday, without exception, the Church asks Her members to recite the creed. This is a public acknowledgement of what we believe and hold to be true in our Catholic faith. However, the revised text has changed the pronoun from we believe to I believe. The use of I has been part of our tradition for centuries as it reflects our personal commitment as we recite the words of the creed. While we pray the creed as a community, it is essential that we recognize our personal response to God as a baptized believer. By saying I it is an individual reminder and outward expression of our personal responsibility to profess and live out our faith. In addition, the use of I now further develops a stronger sense of consistency in our professions of faith. During the Easter season when we renew our Baptismal responses we do not reply we do. For example the priest asks: Do you believe in God? and we respond I do. With this greater emphasis on our personal witness, the Church invites us to take seriously the responsibilities that flow from our baptismal professions of faith and rejoice in the great gift of being part of God s family Training for Extraordinary Ministers Are you interested in serving as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion here in our parish? The next training session for persons who would like to serve in this vital ministry is presently being planned. Saint Margaret Youth Ministry Kristin Rupprecht Youth and Young Adult Minister , ext 166 krupprecht@stmargaret.org Emmaus Team! Youth Ministry is blessed with a team of high school juniors and seniors who serve as peer ministers. They have recently chosen Emmaus as their name, citing the true scriptural roots of ministry and discipleship. Read Luke 24:13-35 to learn the significance of this story. Our Emmaus Team is working with our Confirmation program as well as our middle and high school youth ministry programs. Confirmation Retreats We Need Your Prayers For three weekends, our 138 Confirmation candidates have been going on their overnight retreats at the Msgr. O Dwyer Retreat House in Sparks, MD. They will return to their Mass of Candidacy at the 4:00 pm Mass each Saturday. Please hold them in prayer as they complete this important part of their journey towards Confirmation. Keeping The Faith Where is THAT in the Bible?? We ve heard it before: Where is purgatory in the Bible? Where does the Bible say we should pray to Mary? Show me where the Bible tells us only men can be priests. While as Catholics we revere the written Word of God, that s only part of the story - and the Bible itself says so! Join the next meeting of Keeping the Faith on Thursday, November 3 at 7:00 p.m. in the AEC as we tackle the topic of Sacred Tradition. Is the written Bible our only source of truth? What about Christians who had no Bible - or who couldn t read? What did Jesus have to say about the written Scriptures and non-written teaching? We ll dig deeper into the common assumptions about faith of the Bible alone and gain a new appreciation for the depths of our Catholic heritage. Keeping the Faith meets every first and third Thursday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the AEC. We travel in-depth into Catholic topics that you may have missed and help you to understand and be able to explain them. New members are always welcome, so if you re interested, give Marie Dekowski a call at , ext. 126 or her at mdekowski@stmargaret.org. 4
