1 Purpose: This activity will get the children into their Bibles and help them review the Bible Verse for the week. Description: The children will decode the reference for this week s Bible Verse using the Bible Formula Table. Then they will look up the verse using the reference. Materials Needed: For this activity you will need this Help Sheet, copies of the Lesson 4 Bible Formula Table from the Lesson Materials Folder, and writing or coloring instruments for each child in your group. To introduce this activity, say the following: 1. A chemical formula tells scientists how something is made. 2. Today we have our own formula to solve. 3. Let s see if we can solve this formula using the Bible Formula Table. For detailed instructions on how to do this activity, see the Training Video. During the activity, say the following: 1. Try to solve the formula before the other team. 2. The team to solve the formula first wins the round 3. I will help you if you are stuck. Bible Verse: Never stop praying. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 (NLT) After the activity, say the following: 1. Today s Bible Verse tells us to never stop praying. 2. Remember this week that we should read God s word and talk to Him all the time.

3 Purpose: This activity will help the children review the Bible Lesson of Jonah and will reinforce that God is everywhere. Description: The children will make popsicle stick puppets and use them to act out the story of Jonah. Materials Needed: For this activity you will need this Help Sheet, construction paper, scissors, drawing materials, glue sticks, and several popsicle sticks for each child in your group. Note: For younger kids, use the Jonah Cutouts page from the Lesson Materials Folder and let them cut out the figures and color them to make their puppets. Older kids may enjoy drawing their own figures and cutting them out. To introduce this activity, say the following: 1. Today we are going to make some puppets and act out the Bible Story. 2. Everyone take some paper, and draw some of the characters from the story. 3. We need, Jonah, some sailors, the boat, the fish, the king of Nineveh, and some Ninevite people. 4. After you draw them, use some scissors to cut them out and then glue them to a popsicle stick. Note: Help the kids make their puppets. It is okay if you have more than one of a few characters as long as you have at least one of each one you need for the story. Pick some kids and have them use the puppets to act out the story. As our volunteers act out the story, I will stop them and ask you questions. 2. Stop. 3. Was God here in the story? (Yes, He was.) 4. That s right! God was right there! After the activity, say the following: 1. Was there anywhere in our story that God was not? (No.) 2. Even when Jonah was running away, God was right there with him. Summary: Just like God was with Jonah no matter where he went, God will be with us no matter where we go.

8 Purpose: This activity will remind the children that God is with us everywhere and we can talk to Him anytime. Description: The children will make a bracelet to remind them that God is with them wherever they go and they can talk to Him anytime. Materials Needed: For this activity you will need this Help Sheet, scissors, leather strips (or string), and beads that spell pray (or other beads). To introduce this activity, say the following: 1. Today we are going to make something to remind us that God is with us wherever we go. 2. Everyone take some beads and a leather strip. 3. If you need help making your bracelet, ask me and I will help you. Note: Help the kids put the beads on and tie knots so the beads won t slide off. Then tie two sliding knots to be the closure of the bracelet. For detailed instructions on how to do this activity, see the Training Video. During the activity, say the following: 1. Is there anywhere that we can wear this bracelet that God is not there? (No.) 2. If God is with us everywhere, what should we do? Should we talk to Him, or not talk to Him? (We should talk to God.) After the activity, say the following: 1. Everywhere you wear this bracelet, remember that God is with you and you can pray to Him. Summary: Wear this bracelet every day to remind you that God is with you and that you can talk to Him anytime.

9 Purpose: This activity will teach the children specific things or people to pray for and will give them a visual reminder to pray at all times. Description: The children will color a cross with pictures of people in their lives that they should pray for. Then they will make the cross into a cube they can roll and pray for what comes up. Materials Needed: For this activity you will need this Help Sheet, the Prayer Cube Cross from the Lesson Materials Folder, tape, and drawing or coloring materials for each student in your group. Note: Cut the crosses out ahead of time or get scissors and let kids cut out their own. To introduce this activity, say the following: 1. There are many things and people in our lives that we should pray for every week. 2. This cross has some pictures of people in our lives that we should pray for. 3. We are going to color these pictures. 4. When we are done coloring, fold and tape your cross like this and make it into a cube. 5. I ll help you if you need it. For detailed instructions on how to do this activity, see the Training Video. During the activity, say the following: 1. What is one way you can pray for your family? (Parents work. Siblings school.) 2. What about your friends? (School. Parents.) 3. What about your teachers? (Lessons. Bosses.) 4. What about your church? (Pastors. Teachers.) 5. What about your school? (Safety. Leaders. Teachers.) 6. What about our country? (President. Leaders.) After the activity, say the following: 1. Let s roll our cube right now and pray for who or what comes up. Summary: Use this cube this week to help you to remember to pray for the people and things on it.

10 Small Group Activity: Prayer Cube Lesson 4

11 Purpose: This activity will help the children learn how Jesus taught us to pray. Description: The children will learn one way to structure their prayers using an acronym of the word Pray. Materials needed: For this activity you will need this Help Sheet, the P.R.A.Y. Journal from the Lesson Materials Folder, and writing or drawing materials for each child in your group. To introduce the activity say: 1. Jesus taught his disciples to pray. 2. Today we are going to learn one way to pray. Note: As you pass out the P.R.A.Y. Journals, emphasize to the kids that they don t have to pray a certain way, but this is one way to pray. For detailed instructions on how to do the activity see the Training Video. During the activity say the following: 1. This is a seven day prayer journal. 2. An acrostic is when you use the letters in a word to help you remember something. 3. We have made an acrostic of the word pray. 4. P stands for Praise. We need to remember to praise God for what He has done. 5. R stands for Request. That means to ask God for things that we need and to ask for things for other people. 6. A stands for Admit. We need to admit to God that we have sinned and done wrong things. 7. Y stands for Yield. That means to tell God we will do what He wants us to do. Even if we sometimes don t want to. 8. Every day this week, write in your praises by the P, your requests by the R, what you admit that you did wrong by the A, and what God is telling you to do by the Y. After the activity say: 1. Practice praying this week using your P.R.A.Y. acrostic. 2. Remember, this is not the only way to pray to God. God will hear you no matter how you pray, but this is one way to pray. Summary: Use this journal to help you remember to pray this week. Remember that it is important to pray every day.

13 Purpose: This activity will help the children review the Main Point, Bible Lesson and Bible Verse. Description: The children will review the Main Point, the Bible Lesson, and the Bible Memory Verse by recording them in an Adventures In Science Journal. Note: There are two versions of the Adventures In Science Journal available to you. The version for older kids has a picture from the Bible Lesson for the kids to color and places for them to write in the Main Point, Bible Verse and a description of the Bible Lesson. The younger version has the Bible Lesson picture, but the Main Point and Bible Verse are written in for the kids to color as well. You may also put the parent letter on the back of the Journal. Materials Needed: For this activity you will need this Help Sheet, the Lesson 4 Science Journal from the Lesson Materials Folder (older or younger), and writing or coloring instruments for each child in your group. To introduce this activity, say the following: 1. Scientists put their discoveries in journals so they can go back and review what they learned. 2. Just like scientists, we are going to keep a journal of what we learned today. Note: Have older kids write in the Main Point, Bible Verse, and what happened in the Bible Lesson. Both younger and older kids can color in the pictures. For detailed instructions on how to do this activity, see the Training Video. During the activity, say the following: 1. Who remembers what our Main Point is today? (God Is With Me Everywhere, I Should Talk To Him All The Time!) 2. Who remembers what happened in our Bible Lesson? (Jonah tried to get away from God, but God was always with him.) 3. Who remembers our Bible Verse this week? (1 Thessalonians 5:17 Never stop praying. ) After the activity, say the following: 1. Write your name on the front of this journal. 2. Be sure to show your parents the letter on the back. Summary: Share this journal with your parents and use it to remind you of your lesson this week.
