Welcome to St. Mark s, we are so glad you are with us today! No matter where you are on your spiritual journey, you have a place here. This is Christ s Church. There is a place for you here. We are a church that shares a living and daring confidence in God s grace. Liberated by our faith, we embrace you as a whole person - questions, complexities and all. Join us as we do God s work in Christ s name for the life of the world. Children are always welcome to participate in worship. We invite all children to try to be in worship through the children s sermon (about 20 minutes) and then invite the children, if they want, to head to the nursery, but we love to have the children with us through the whole worship service! To help our youngest worshipers, Little Lutheran Activity Bags are located in the rear of the sanctuary which have crayons and worship appropriate coloring pages. We offer a children s bulletin that has puzzles and activities for little worshipers to work on during the service, and we offer a Soft Space for infants and toddlers to spread out a bit in during worship. Worshiping with children is important to us, and so we hope you find these things helpful so that you may worship together as a family. Restrooms are located through the back left exit the sanctuary, go up the stairs, through the first room to the end of the hallway. If you need assistance, please see the attendants (ushers) at the back of the sanctuary. Cell phones and other electronic devices are welcome to be used to Post, Tweet and Instagram the Good News you hear today, but we kindly ask you to turn the sound off on them so that they do not cause a distraction to other worshipers. Our team of ushers is available throughout the service to be of any assistance you might need. Assistive Listening devices are available. Please see an usher. Are you new or visiting St. Mark s? If you would like to receive more information about St. Mark s, we have several methods where you can leave your information with us. At the entry ways to the sanctuary, you will find our guest books in which you can leave your name and contact information, or in the pews we have blue cards that you can fill and place in the offering plate, or if you like, you can sign our electronic guest book. We d be delighted to keep you informed about the many events and opportunities here at St. Mark s and hope you will join us again. For the electronic book, open your mobile device to the bar code scanner and take a picture of this square QR code; it will take you to our electronic guest book. 3
Instructions Leader says We all say together + Gathering + The Holy Spirit gathers us together for worship Introduction The grumbling of the Pharisees and the scribes in today s gospel is actually our holy hope: This Jesus welcomes sinners and eats with them. That our God wills to seek and to save the lost is not only a holy hope, it is our only hope. As Paul s first letter to Timothy reminds us, The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. Thanks be to God. Prelude Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow arr. Lynette Maynard Welcome Confession & Forgiveness All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, who forgives all our sin, whose mercy endures forever. Amen. God of all mercy and consolation, come to the help of your people, turning us from our sin to live for you alone. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that we may confess our sin, receive your forgiveness, and grow into the fullness of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. 4
Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Silence is kept for reflection. Most merciful God, we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. 5

Greeting The presiding minister and the assembly greet each other. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Kyrie Canticle of Praise 7

Prayer of the Day Let us pray. A brief silence is kept before the prayer. O God, overflowing with mercy and compassion, you lead back to yourself all those who go astray. Preserve your people in your loving care, that we may reject whatever is contrary to you and may follow all things that sustain our life in your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. The assembly is seated. 9
+ Word + God speaks to us in scripture, preaching, song and prayer First Lesson Exodus 32:7-14 While Moses is on Mount Sinai, the people grow restless and make a golden calf to worship. Today s reading shows Moses as the mediator between an angry God and a sinful people. Moses reminds God that the Israelites are God s own people and boldly asks mercy for them A Reading from Exodus: 6 The Lord said to Moses, Go down at once! Your people, whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have acted perversely; 8 they have been quick to turn aside from the way that I commanded them; they have cast for themselves an image of a calf, and have worshiped it and sacrificed to it, and said, These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt! 9 The Lord said to Moses, I have seen this people, how stiff-necked they are. 10 Now let me alone, so that my wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them; and of you I will make a great nation. 11 But Moses implored the Lord his God, and said, O Lord, why does your wrath burn hot against your people, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? 12 Why should the Egyptians say, It was with evil intent that their god brought them out to kill them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth? Turn from your fierce wrath; change your mind and do not bring disaster on your people. 13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, how you swore to them by your own self, saying to them, I will multiply your descendants like the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have promised I will give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it forever. 14 And the Lord relented concerning the disaster that the Lord planned for the chosen people. The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God. 10
Psalmody Psalm 51 Second Lesson 1 Timothy 1:12-17 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love. (Ps. 51:1) 1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; in your great compassion blot out my offenses. 2 Wash me through and through from my wickedness, and cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I know my offenses, and my sin is ev- er before me. 4 Against you only have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight; so you are justified when you speak and right in your judgment. 5 Indeed, I was born steeped in wickedness, a sinner from my mother s womb. 6 Indeed, you delight in truth deep within me, and would have me know wisdom deep within. 7 Remove my sins with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be pur- er than snow. 8 Let me hear joy and gladness; that the body you have broken may rejoice. 9 Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my wickedness. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spir- it within me. The letters to Timothy are called the Pastoral Epistles because they contain advice especially intended for leaders in the church. Here the mercy shown to Paul, who once persecuted the church, is cited as evidence that even the most unworthy may become witnesses to the grace of God. A Reading from 1 st Timothy: 2 I am grateful to Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because he judged me faithful and appointed me to his service, 13 even though I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and a man of violence. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, 14 and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 15 The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus 11
came into the world to save sinners of whom I am the foremost. 16 But for that very reason I received mercy, so that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display the utmost patience, making me an example to those who would come to believe in him for eternal life. 17 To the Sovereign of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Gospel Acclamation The assembly stands to welcome the gospel. Gospel Reading Luke 14: 1, 7-14 Jesus tells two stories that suggest a curious connection between the lost being found and sinners repenting. God takes the initiative to find sinners, each of whom is so precious to God that his or her recovery brings joy in heaven The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. Glory to you O Lord. 1 ONow all the tax collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to Jesus. 2 And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them. 3 So Jesus told them this parable: 4 Which man of you, having a hundred sheep and losing one of them, does not leave the ninetynine in the wilderness and go after the one that is lost until he finds it? 5 When he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders and rejoices. 6 And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, Rejoice with me, for I have found 12
my sheep that was lost. 7 Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance. 8 Or what woman of you having ten silver coins, if she loses one of them, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it? 9 When she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost. 10 Just so, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. The assembly may be seated. Children s Sermon Sermon Children are invited forward for a short lesson before the sermon. After the children s sermon, the children are invited to return to their seats with their parents or leave to spend time in the nursery. The Rev. Bryan Penman 13
Hymn of the Day WOV 749 The assembly stands to proclaim the word of God in song. 14
+ Baptism and Reception of New Members + God welcomes us into the household of God Presentation God, who is rich in mercy and love, gives us a new birth into a living hope through the sacrament of baptism. By water and the Word God delivers us from sin and death and raises us to new life in Jesus Christ. We are united with all the baptized in the one body of Christ, anointed with the gift of the Holy Spirit, and joined in God's mission for the life of the world. Today we will baptize Riley and receive into membership here at St. Mark s the Brian, his son Brian and Brigette family. The presiding minister addresses parents or others who bring for baptism children who are not able to answer for themselves: Called by the Holy Spirit, trusting in the grace and love of God, do you desire to have your children baptized into Christ? Response: I do. The presiding minister addresses those to be baptized: As you bring Riley Jane to receive the gift of baptism, you are entrusted with responsibilities: to live with her among God's faithful people, bring her to the word of God and the holy supper, teach her the Lord's Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments, place in her hands the holy scriptures, and nurture her in faith and prayer, so that your child may learn to trust God, proclaim Christ through word and deed, care for others and the world God made, and work for justice and peace. Do you promise to help Riley Jane grow in the Christian faith and life? Response: I do. 15
The presiding minister addresses sponsors: Sponsors, do you promise to nurture Riley Jane in the Christian faith as you are empowered by God's Spirit, and to help them live in the covenant of baptism and in communion with the church? Response: I do. The presiding minister addresses those seeking to join the church: We give thanks that the Holy Spirit has led you to our community. Do you intend to continue in the covenant God made with you in Holy Baptism: to live among God's faithful people, to hear his Word and share in his supper, to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed, to serve all people, following the example of our Lord Jesus, and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth? Each person answers in turn. I do, and I ask God to help and guide me. The presiding minister addresses the assembly: People of God, do you promise to support Riley, and pray for her in their new life in Christ? We do. People of God, will you help Brian his son Brian and Brigette hear the gospel of Jesus Christ within this household of faith? We will, and we ask God to help us. The assembly stands. Profession of Faith The presiding minister addresses candidates for baptism as well as the parents and sponsors of young children. The assembly may join in the responses. Let us together profess our faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the faith of the church, the faith in which we baptize. Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God? Response: I renounce them. Do you renounce the powers of this world that rebel against God? Response: I renounce them. 16
Do you renounce the ways of sin that draw you from God? Response: I renounce them. The presiding minister addresses the candidates and the assembly. Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended into hell.* On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Thanksgiving at the font The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Water may be poured into the font before or during the thanksgiving. At the font, the presiding minister begins the thanksgiving: We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took delight. Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family, and through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery into freedom. At the river your Son was 17
baptized by John and anointed with the Holy Spirit. By the baptism of Jesus' death and resurrection you set us free from the power of sin and death and raise us up to live in you. Pour out your Holy Spirit, the power of your living Word, that those who are washed in the waters of baptism may be given new life. To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen. Baptism The presiding minister baptizes each candidate. The candidate is immersed into the water, or water is poured on the candidate's head, as the presiding minister says: Reily Jane, I baptize you in the name of the Father,* and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Let us pray. We give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy Spirit you give your daughters and sons new birth, cleanse them from sin, and raise them to eternal life. Laying both hands on the head of each of the newly baptized, the minister prays for each: Sustain Riley Jane with the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever. Amen. The presiding minister marks the sign of the cross on the forehead of each of the baptized. Oil prepared for this purpose may be used. As the sign of the cross is made, the minister says: Riley Jane, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever. Amen. 18
Welcome and Presentation of Gifts A lighted candle may be given to each of the newly baptized (to a sponsor of a young child) as a representative of the congregation says: Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. A representative of the congregation may present a Bible to each person being welcomed. New members are also given a directory of the congregation so that they can get to know us, a set of work gloves so that they may join us in doing God s Work with Our Hands, a Welcome Letter explaining things about the congregation, a set of envelopes so that they can support the mission of St. Mark s to bring up new disciples and connect people to lives of faith, a set of invitations so that they too, might invite new people to come and join them on their faith journey. Receive these gifts as a reminder to live into your baptismal covenant that you affirmed this day: Hear God's word with us. Learn and tell its stories. Discover its mysteries. Honor its commandments. Rejoice in its good news. May God's life-giving word inspire you and make you wise. The ministers and the baptismal group face the assembly as the presider leads the assembly in the welcome. Let us welcome the newly baptized and our newest members: We welcome you into the body of Christ and into the mission we share: join us in giving thanks and praise to God and bearing God's creative and redeeming word to all the world. 19
Prayers of the People Prayers reflect the wideness of God s mercy for the whole world The Assisting Minister invites us into prayer Rooted in Christ and rising to serve, let us pray for the church, the world, and all in need. Each portion of the prayers ends with: Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. The presiding minister concludes the prayers with these words: Into your hands, O God, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy; through your Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen. For our friends and family: Don Dunn, Katie Gresh Dottie Woodring, Ann Beatty, John Holdsworth, Linda Jara, Dawn W, Jenny, Gerry, Bob, Ann Wincherman, Edward Patruno We give thanks for: The brave first responders who gave their life one September morning 15 years ago today. We remember and pray for those grieving this day: The Tiver Family Peace The presiding minister and the assembly greet each other in the peace of the risen Christ. The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. The people may greet one another with a sign of Christ s peace, and may say, Peace be with you, or similar words. The assembly is seated. 20
+ Meal + God feeds us with the presence of Jesus Christ. Offering An offering is gathered to support the mission of the church. Funds gathered today will help sustain our ministry efforts at St. Mark s, support the wider national church and help those in need. During the month of September, we will be collecting for Cradles to Crayons, an idea first conceived in 2000 by Lyn Margherio while watching her niece and nephew largely ignore most their toys and art supplies-an idea came to her: What if all of these like-new or never-used children s things could find their way into the homes of other boys and girls kids who really needed them? Cradles to Crayons provides children from birth through age 12, living in homeless or low-income situations, with the essential items they need to thrive at home, at school and at play. They supply these items free of charge by engaging and connecting communities that have with communities that need. Offertory Amazing Grace Bell Choir Offertory Canticle The assembly stands as the gifts and offerings are brought forward 21
Offertory Prayer God of mercy and grace, the eyes of all wait upon you, and you open your hand in blessing. Fill us with good things at your table, that we may come to the help of all in need, through Jesus Christ, our redeemer and Lord. Amen. Great Thanksgiving Dialogue Proper Preface The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. The Presiding Minister continues: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places offer thanks... we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Sanctus 22
Words of Institution In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Lord s Prayer Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit we are bold to pray in the words our Savior taught us, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. The Assembly may be seated. Invitation to Communion The bread may be broken for the communion.
