8 What the Bible Teaches About Partiality Deut 1:15-18 judges are to hear the cases between your fellow countrymen, & judge righteously between a man & his fellow countryman, or the alien who is with him. You shall not show partiality in judgment; you shall hear the small the great alike. You shall not fear man, for the judgment is God s Deut 10: the Lord is the awesome God who does not show partiality, nor take a bribe. He executes justice for the orphan & the widow, & shows His love for the alien by giving him food & clothing. So show your love for the alien. You shall fear the Lord your God; you shall serve Him & cling to Him, & you shall swear by His name. 2 Ch 19:5-11 judges are to consider what they are doing, for they do not judge for man but for the Lord; let the fear of the Lord be upon you; be very careful what you do, for the Lord our God will have no part in unrighteousness, or partiality, or the taking of a bribe Ps 82:1-4 - God judges those who judge unjustly & show partiality to the wicked Pr 18:5; 24:23; 28:21 - To show partiality to the wicked is not good, Nor to thrust aside the righteous in judgment Mal 2:7-9 to show partiality in the instruction = God will make you despised & abased before all the people Acts 10: God is not one to show partiality, but in every nation the man who fears Him does what is right, is welcome to Him Rom 2: there is no partiality with God - all who sinned without the Law will also perish without the Law; & all who sinned under the Law will be judged by the Law Eph 6:9 - there is no partiality with our Master in heaven Col 3: do your work heartily, as for the Lord Christ whom you serve for if you do wrong, you will receive the consequences of the wrong & that without partiality 1Tim 5:21 Timothy is to maintain these principles without bias, & without partiality The Royal Law Matt 19: to enter into life, keep the commments - You shall not commit murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; Honor your father mother; You shall love your neighbor as yourself. Matt 22:37-40; Mk 12:28-31; Lk 10: "'You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind' = foremost commment; the second is 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself' - On these two commments depend the whole Law & the Prophets (Mt 22:40); there is no other commment greater than these (Mk 12:31); do this, & you will live (Lk 10:28) Jn 13:34-35; 15:12,17 - love one another just as Jesus has loved you Rom 13: Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law; love does no wrong to a neighbor; love therefore is the fulfillment of the law (s. Gal 5:14) 1Jn 3:23,11,14,18; 4:7,11,21; 2Jn 5 God s commment = love one another / proof that we have passed out of death into life (v14); let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed truth (v18); everyone who loves is born of God knows God (4:7) Exodus 20:1-17 The Ten Commments * All believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ are not exempt from obeying the Law Paul anticipates 3 common objections to the doctrine of Justification by Faith 1. It encourages sin (e.g. 3:8) because of 5:19-21 Ans: NEVER! 6:1-14 we re dead to sin but alive to God 2. It allows sin because we re not under Law (b/e of 6:14) Ans: NEVER! A change in masters occurred (6:15-7:6) 3. It makes the Law sinful (because of 7:5) Ans: NEVER! The Law reveals sin (7:7-25)
9 Consider Yourselves Dead to Sin but Alive to God (Romans 6:11) Q1: What shall we say then? Are we to continue (pres act subj) in sin that grace might increase (aor act subj)? A1: May it never be! THE REASONS (What We Know) v2 died (aor act ind) to sin v3 baptized (aor pass ind) into Christ = baptized (aor pass ind) into His death v4 buried with Him thro baptism into death v5 united with Him in likeness of His death = united with Him in likeness of His resurrection * old self crucified (aor pass ind) with Him WHAT IS TRUE OF CHRIST IS TRUE OF ME v8 if we have died (aor act ind) with Christ, we believe we shall also live with Him v9 Why: Christ, having been raised (aor pass ptc) from the dead, is never to die (pres act ind) again * Death no longer is master over (pres act ind) Him v10 Why: the death that He died (aor act ind), He died (aor act ind) to sin, once for all BUT the life that He lives (pres act ind), He lives (pres act ind) to God THE RESULT (What It Results In) #1 can t live (fut act ind) in it v5 as Christ was raised (aor pass ind) from the dead thro Father s glory so we too might walk (aor act subj) in newness of life v6 body of sin done away with (aor pass subj) #2 no longer slaves (pres act inf) to sin Why: he who has died (aor act ptc) is freed (perf pass ind) from sin #3 freed (aor pass ptc) from sin (v18,22) #4 became slaves (aor pass ind) of +R (v18) #5 enslaved (aor pass ptc) to God (v22) Q2: What then? Shall we sin (aor act subj) because we are (pres act ind) not under law but under grace A2: May it never be! FACT: you are slaves of whom you obey The outcome determines the master of your life Only 2 kinds of slavery in this world 1. Sin Death 2. Obedience Righteousness BEFORE What: were (imperf act ind) slaves to sin (v17, 20) v19 presented (aor act ind) members as slaves to impurity & lawlessness, restulting in further lawlessness v20 were free (imperf act ind) in regard to +R RESULT v21 benefit/fruit = shame outcome/end = death v23 wages of sin is death AFTER v17 became obedient (aor act ind) from the heart to teaching to which you were committed (aor pass ind) * having been freed (aor pass ptc) from sin (v18, 22) v18 you became slaves (aor pass ind) of +R v22 enslaved (aor pass ptc) to God RESULT v22 benefit/fruit = Sanctification Outcome/end = eternal Life (free gift of God in Christ Jesus our Lord, v23) THE RESPONSIBILITY (What to do) v11 Even so you (humeis) consider (pres mid imp) yourselves to be (pres act inf) dead to sin but alive (pres act ptc) to God in Christ Jesus v12 do not let sin reign (pres act imp) in your mortal bodies that you should obey (pres act inf) its lusts v13 do not go on presenting (pres act imp) your members to sin as instruments of R but present (aor act imp) yourselves to God as those alive (pres act ptc) from the dead & your members as instruments of +R to God v14 Why: sin shall not be master over (fut act ind) you, for you are (pres act ind) not under law but under grace
Consider Yourselves Dead to Sin but Alive to God
Consider Yourselves Dead to Sin Alive to God Q1: What shall we say then? Are we to continue (pres act subj) in sin that grace might increase (aor act subj)? THE RESULT A1: May it never be! (What It Results
