Are We Saved By Faith Only? A. Are we saved by faith alone? 1. Actually, those who teach this don t really believe it. 2. Because they would also say we are saved by many other things --- alone: a. Sola scriptura ( by Scripture alone ) b. Sola fide ( by faith alone ) c. Sola gratia ( by grace alone ) d. Solo Christo ( Christ alone ) e. Soli Deo gloria ( glory to God alone ) [So when it comes to salvation, no one is saved by any one thing alone: by Scripture alone, or grace alone, or Christ alone, or to the glory of God alone.] Saved By What? As one reads the New Testament, it is apparent that many factors are involved in the salvation of man's eternal soul. Salvation, or being "saved," has to do with a rescue from great spiritual danger. Man is in danger because of his sins, for the wage he earns for sin is spiritual death and separation from God. Therefore God stepped in to rescue man from that fate, for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God but the gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord (Rom 3:23; 6:23). The following is a brief summary of the use of the words "Savior," "saved" and "salvation" in the New Testament. The first several passages refer to the divine role in salvation. Look-up these verses, evaluate your life and enjoy the reading: Saved by God 1Tim 1:1; 2:3; 4:10 Saved by Christ Luke 19:10; Jn 4:42 Saved by the Gospel Rom 1:16; 1 Cor 15:1-2 Saved by Grace Eph 2:8-9; Acts 15:11 Save by Mercy Titus 3:4-5 Saved by Ch s Blood Matt 26:28; Eph 1:7; Col 1:14 Saved by the Name of Christ Acts 4:12 1

All the above are factors related to the divine role ("God's part") in man's salvation. The following are factors involving our personal role ("man's part") in salvation. The scriptures teach that each one of us, of accountable age, has a part in our soul's salvation. Saved by Calling upon the Lord's Name Rom 10:13; Acts 22:16 Saved by Faith John 3:16; 3:36; Acts 15:9 Saved by Repentance Luke 24:46-47; Acts 2:38 Saved by Confession Rom 10:9-10 Saved by Baptism Mark 16:15-16; 1Pet 3:21 Saved by Obedience to the Father and Son Matt 7:21; Heb 5:8-9 Saved by Works Phil 2:21; Jas 2:17-18 Saved by Hope Rom 8:24 Saved by Effort Acts 2:40; 1 Tim 4:16 Saved by Enduring Faith Matt 24:13; Rev 2:10 There is a tendency among some to stress one factor in salvation and ignore others. The soul of man is not saved by any one factor alone. If we are to understand and please God, we must accept all that His word teaches on a given subject (cf. Matt 4:4). I. ORIGIN OF FAITH ONLY SALVATION A. This doctrine traces back to the 4 th & 5 th cent. AD from a man named Augustine, a bishop of Hippo a Roman province in Africa. B. But it was popularized by Martin Luther a 16 th century catholic monk - turned reformer. 1. He gave the doctrine its worldwide notice. 2. He also made the 1 st translation of the Bible into German. a. But he was so determined to contradict the Catholic view of salvation by works, that he altered his translation of the Scripture to make his point. b. He added the word alone to (Rom 3:28); later revisions say only through faith. 2

Romans 3:28 28 For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law. Proverbs 30:5-6 5 Every word of God is tested; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him. 6 Do not add to His words or He will reprove you, & you will be proved a liar. C. Luther believed Paul & James contradicted one another. Romans 3:28 28 For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law. James 2:20-21, But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up Isaac his son on the altar? 24 You see that a man is justified by works & not by faith alone. 25 In the same way, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers & sent them out by another way? 26 For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead. 1. Luther believed Paul was right & James was wrong. a. In his preface to the NT (1522), he called the book of James an epistle of straw. b. He said he would give his doctor s beret to anyone who could reconcile James & Paul (Here I Stand, Abington - Cokesbury Press). 2. But Paul & James were dealing with different issues. a. Paul was writing to those who believed they could merit salvation (earn it) by keeping the Law of Moses. b. James was writing to those who believed that once they were saved there was no reason to obey the Law of Christ. 3

3. But from Luther s day forward, the doctrine of justification by faith alone became the cornerstone of the Protestant Reformation. D. Protestant Church Doctrines: Methodist discipline: We are accounted righteous before God only for the merit of our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ, by faith, & not for our own works or deservings. Wherefore, that we are justified by faith only is a most wholesome doctrine, & very full of comfort (Discipline of the Methodist Church, 1952, page 28). Baptist Manual: We believe the Scriptures teach that the great gospel blessing which Christ secures to such as believe in him is justification; that justification includes the pardon of sin, & the gift of eternal life on principles of righteousness; that it is bestowed, not in consideration of any works of righteousness which we have done, but solely through faith in Christ; by means of which faith his perfect righteousness is freely imputed to us by God; that it brings us into a state of most blessed peace & favor with God, & secures every other blessing needed for time & eternity (The Standard Manual For Baptist Churches, Edward T. Hiscox, D.D., page 62) II. WHAT DOES IT MEAN? A. To say that we are justified by faith only means that we need only believe or to put our faith in Christ (His death & res.) to be saved. 1. In other words, God will declare you to be forgiven, consider you to be righteous, & save you eternally at the moment you put your trust & confidence in what Jesus did for you (Rom 4:21). a. They would say, Obedience to Christ is the result of salvation, but not essential to salvation. B. The inconsistency of this teaching is so obvious that there is hardly a page of the NT that does not refute it. 1. For example, does this doctrine mean that we don t have to repent of our sins to be forgiven & saved? 4

a. Turn to Luke 13. Twice, Jesus said to the Jews, unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. - In that passage Jesus identified the Galileans as sinners (miss the mark) & those who dwell in Jerusalem as culprits (delinquents, transgressors). - Jesus said they would ALL perish, which means to be destroyed fully, unless they repented. Luke 13: Now on the same occasion there were some present who reported to Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. 2 And Jesus said to them, Do you suppose that these Galileans were greater sinners than all other Galileans because they suffered this fate? 3 I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. 4 Or do you suppose that those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell & killed them were worse culprits than all the men who live in Jerusalem? 5 I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish Acts 17: The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, 31 because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; & of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead. b. What does it mean to repent? Matthew 21:28-31 Parable of Two Sons 28 But what do you think? A man had two sons, & he came to the first & said, Son, go work today in the vineyard. 29 And he answered, I will not ; but afterward he regretted it & went. 30 The man came to the second & said the same thing; & he answered, I will, sir ; but he did not go. 31 Which of the two did the will of his father? They said, The first. Jesus said to them, Truly I say to you that the tax collectors & prostitutes will get into the kingdom of God before you. - Did you notice that only those who do the will of the Father can go to Heaven? 5

- Did you notice that the worst sinners can go to heaven if they repent, while some of God s children will be excluded? - No one is saved at the point of faith or by faith alone; repentance is needed. 2. Well, on & on we could go with this line of reasoning. Does saved by faith only mean that we don t have to - love God, or confess our faith in Christ, or be baptized into the death of Christ, or obey the Lord s teaching? 1 Corinthians 16:22 (Paul s own handwriting) 22 If anyone does not love the Lord, he is to be accursed [banned from fellowship with God & the church] Maranatha. John 14:15 (The demonstration of love for the Lord) 15 If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. Luke 10:27 27 And he answered, YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, & WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, & WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH [necessary inference: action], & WITH ALL YOUR MIND; & YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF. [So, if salvation is by faith only then one need not repent of sin or love God or obey Jesus Christ.] III. HEBREWS 11 SHOWS THE FALLACY A. There is one chapter in Scripture that shows (better than any place else in the Bible) the nature of faith that justifies us before God & results in our salvation. 1. Everyone listed (Hebrew 11), was said to have done something by faith. 2. What did they believe? 6

a. They believed God (Rom 10:17); they believed His promises to them. Genesis 12:2-3 2 And I will make you a great nation [land: 13:14-17] & I will bless you, & make your name great; & so you shall be a blessing; 3 And I will bless those who bless you, & the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed. Hebrews 11: By faith Isaac blessed Jacob & Esau, even regarding things to come. 21 By faith Jacob, as he was dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, & worshiped, leaning on the top of his staff. 22 By faith Joseph, when he was dying, made mention of the exodus of the sons of Israel, & gave orders concerning his bones. 23 By faith Moses [family] when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw he was a beautiful child; & they were not afraid of the king s edict. 24 By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh s daughter, 25 choosing rather to endure ill-treatment with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin, 26 considering the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt; for he was looking to the reward. B. There is no question but that we are justified by faith, & that salvation results from faith (John 3:16; 3:36; Acts 16:31; Rom 5:1-2; 3:26-28; Eph 2:8). 1. The question is WHEN are we justified by faith? 2. In Hebrews 11, people were justified & saved by faith WHEN they heeded God. CLOSING A. Where are we in Hebrews 11? Can it be said, By faith...? (Heb 11:24-25; 1 Pet 1:22). we consider how to stir up one another to love & works? we do not forsake the assembly? we encourage & exhort one another? we have a sincere love of the brethren? we fervently love one another with a pure heart? 7

1. Are we practical atheists when it comes to these commands of God? B. What about those of you who are not justified or saved from your past sins? 1. All the belief the world will not save you; you still must obey the will of God (16:16). 2. I noticed Carrie Underwood has a new song entitled: Something In The Water. a. A song about the change that ought to take place when someone in baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. b. Is there something in the water? Colossians 2:12 12 having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. 1 Peter 3:21 21 Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, Romans 6:3-4 3 Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death [His blood that provides the forgiveness of sins]? 4 Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. C. One who claims to believe in Christ & yet will not obey Him does not have a faith that pleases God. 1. The chief priests believed, but refused to confess their faith in Christ (John 12:43). 2. The Scripture nowhere speaks of faith only salvation; salvation is not by faith alone. 8

9 James 2:24 24 You see that a man is justified by works & not by faith alone.
