Church Group Devos Friday NIght Warm up Group Questions These are Questions from Sean s Atheist Encounter. These are just suggestions to get the conversation started. 1. On a scale of 1-10, how prepared were you to defend your faith? 2. Do you know any atheists/agnostics/skeptics? What did you learn from this interaction that could help you minister to them? 3. What were the most difficult challenges that Sean raised? 4. What is the biggest lesson you learned tonight? Sean s Atheist Encounter may have felt like a fight that your students weren t prepared for, so our aim this weekend now is to help your students be prepared to contend for the faith. To do this we are going to go through the book of Jude. Bible Study- Have a student Read Jude 1:1-3 Intro: The word translated contend, when verbalized, sounds like our word agonizing. It possesses the idea of athletes who, in an effort to win, find themselves intensely struggling, competing, even fighting with all their might. I Think of a boxer going 12 rounds in the ring. What does it take for a boxer to be able to contend for that long and come out victorious? (let students answer). It takes 1) The call to fight 2) Knowing your opponent 3) Training for Endurance 4) Confidence in victory The small letter of Jude is set up around this call to contend for the faith. Just like a boxer being called to a match, Christians are called to contend for the faith. In order to do that we too must know our opponent, train for endurance, and be confident of victory.

Church Group Devos Friday NIght I. The call to contend (v. 3) 1) Notice that Jude wrote out of necessity. It is easier to talk about the elementary teachings of the faith, but Jude appeals for all of us to contend, agonize, for the faith. All Christians are called to not only know the faith, but also contend for it and be prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is within you (1 peter 3:15). It is not just for people like Sean McDowell or your pastor to know and defend the faith, we are all called to it. before we can contend for the faith, we must know what the Christian faith is. How would you describe the Faith? (allow response time) The Christian Faith is the Gospel of Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:1-8 gives a very clear definition of the Gospel, the Good News, of Jesus. (Read 1 Cor. 15:1-8). The Gospel is centered on the Person and saving work of Jesus Christ- His birth, life, death, resurrection, ascension, and coming Return. 2) Notice that Jude makes it clear that the faith was once for all given to us. What does he mean by that? [I]n Jude, the Christian faith is already in existence as a settled and final body of saving truths. -Dick Lucas We are not free to change it, as if the faith were somehow still evolving and making its way in the world. According to Jude, the faith is not only full, but it already exists in final form. It is not subject to change! (D.R. Helm) Knowing that the faith is once for all and settled, do you see people today trying to change what the Christian faith is all about?

Church Group Devos Friday NIght II. Know Your opponent (v. 4-16) 1) Jude charges these people with two serious sins. (v. 4) -The first is that they have used the grace of God as a license to sin. -The second is that they deny the Lord Jesus- they deny either the humanity of Jesus (that He is 100% man) or they deny the divinity of Jesus (that He is 100% God). (See 1 John 4:1-3) 2) Jude uses 3 examples from the Old Testament that should persuade us that God takes sin very seriously. (v. 5-7) a.) The Disobedient Israelites of the wilderness generation (v. 7) b.) The disobedient angels who rebelled against God (v. 6) c.) The wicked men of Sodom and Gomorrah (v. 7) 3) Read verses 8-16 Ask the student to list all the characteristics they see in the verses 8-16 of the false teachers/false believers. Final group questions: 1. Do you think it is harder to have faith in our days than at other times in history? 2. What challenges to faith particularly characterize our own times? 3. What challenges do you have in believing and proclaiming the faith?

Church Group Devos Saturday NIght Warm Up Questions: 1. What is the most important thing you took away from today s breakout sessions? 2. What is the most important thing you took away from today s main sessions? III. Training for Endurance (Jude 1:17-22) Intro The reality of the Christian life is that it is hard. Attacks will come at you, left hooks coming out of nowhere that will often leave you dazed on the mat. So how are we to keep going in the midst of such conflict and hardship? As we finish up Jude together, let us see how he ends his letter to these Christians that he has charged to, contend for the faith. There are a few things you need to do in order to train yourself for endurance, to keep going with the fight is hard: 1. Recognize the reality of false teachers, scoffers, and false believers. (Jude 1:17-19). -What is a scoffer? (see Proverbs 21:24) 2. Build yourselves up in the Faith (Jude 1:20). The yourselves here is plural. In other words he is telling us to build each other up in the faith. The Christian life is one that is to be ran together, not alone. -What are some ways we can build one another up in the faith?

Church Group Devos Saturday NIght 3. Pray in the Holy Spirit (Jude 1:20) -Prayer that is in accordance with the Word of God, then stimulated, guided and infused by the Holy Spirit (see also Romans 8:26-27, Ephesians 6:18). 4. Keep yourselves in the love of God -How do you know the love of God? BY the Word of God. 5. Waiting for the mercy of Christ that leads to eternal life. -this is expectantly anticipating and living in light of Christ s return and promise of eternal life. 6. Live mercifully toward all -how are we to treat those who are being affected by doubt or under the influence of false teachers? We must bear ourselves toward them with both a tremblingg pity and an abhorrence of their impurities. (Mark Dever) IV. Confidence in Victory (Jude 1:1-2, 24-25) The final thing a boxer needs to contend and be victorious is confidence in victory. Where do we get our confidence? Jude gives us a few final words that should lead us to have confidence in God s ultimate victory through Christ. See the identity that he gives to the believers at the beginning of the letter. To those who are: 1. Called - God called us to be His children not based on anything we have done, but according to His love and mercy. (see Romans 1:6, 8:28; Galatians 1:6, Ephesians 4:1, 1 Cor. 1:2) We are called by the Spirit of God- this is our past.

Church Group Devos Saturday NIght 2. Beloved in God the Father - This love is eternal He loved us from before the foundation of the world, loves us now, and His love will endure forever. The love of the Father is our past, present, and future. 3. Kept for/by Christ Jesus - Christ gives us the strength to keep going especially when the days are hard and the fight is beyond what we can handle. (See John 6:37-40, 17:11-12; Philippians 1:6, 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24; 1 Peter 1:3-5, 1 John 5:18). This is our present and future. Despite our failures and sins, we will be presented in His glorious presence without fault and with great joy. In other words, he is powerful not just to keep but also to cleanse. In the presence of God, Adam hid, Isaiah fell to the ground and confessed his uncleanness, and Job repented in dust and ashes. In that presence, we will be presented without fault and with great rejoicing. (Mark Dever) Last few questions 1. How would you describe the life of faith from Jude? 2. Do those descriptions mark your life?
