Minister s Letter Sometimes people can listen to you but not really get a grasp of what you are trying to say. I recently came across an excellent story about how people can miss the point of what you are trying to tell them. Apparently in December 1903 after many attempts the Wright brothers were successful in getting their flying machine off the ground. Thrilled they telegraphed this message to their sister Katherine: We have actually flown 120 feet. Will be home for Christmas. Katherine hurried to the editor of the local newspaper and showed him the message. He glanced at it and said: How nice. The boys will be home for Christmas. There is a big responsibility laid on us as God s people to make sure we not only pass on the message of Christmas but to make sure that people don t miss the real point in all the rush of everything that happens at this time of year, with presents to buy, cards to send, food to buy and prepare and parties to go to! So please do invite friends, neighbours and even strangers to come along to church this Christmas: so that they too can celebrate the real point of this time of year: the birth of Jesus born to be our Saviour. Kevin Christmas Fayre on December 12th Get out your cook book, search your book shelves and cupboards because we need items to provide donations of Raffle Prizes, Tombola Prizes, Bric A brac, Books, Cakes, Nearly New Clothes. Christmas paper has already gone on sale (see Fiona or Elsa-May). Blossomfield Singers The Blossomfield Singers (including our own Alan & Lucilla Lang) put on a very good evening for the Bible Society. If you know they are singing in the area again don t hesitate to go and hear them. They are worth your support. Ian Rogerson 3

Fred Kaan The recent mentions of the death of the hymn writer Fred Kaan have prompted me to write of the two occasions on which Margaret and I met him. Some 23 years ago we very sadly lost a grandson, Andrew aged 16 months, in a tragic drowning accident in Sharjah near Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, where his family were living at that time. Margaret and I made a hasty journey to Sharjah to be with them and accompanied them back to England. Andrew was cremated at the Swindon Crematorium and the service was taken by Fred Kaan who was a great help and comfort to us all. Our second meeting was at the St.Ninian s URC 50 th anniversary reunion attended by Fred and Anthea Kaan. We recalled with him the earlier meeting. A short time later we received a very nice letter from Fred with which he enclosed a booklet entitled My Hymn-writing Journey. This was a paper he had presented at a Conference of the American Hymn Society and in this he makes reference to our Grandson s death and also to memories of the death of his own first-born son and added yet, having been through that experience I had no glib words, no trite phrases, no pious answers for that young couple; only my own rebelliousness to put alongside theirs and for the rest to sit where they sat, in the silence of human solidarity. This is the Hymn he wrote on the occasion (To the tune Fortunatus New ) When,O God,our faith is tested And our hope is undermined, When our love of living shrivels And we feel bereft and drained, Then we turn to you and cry For your answer to our why? 4 As we question and accuse you out of depths of being tried, could it be, God! that in weakness you yourself are crucified? Are you with us in our grief? Help us in our unbelief? With emotions taut to breaking, Hearts with hurt and havoc frayed, Reason by remorse diminished, Souls distraught as if betrayed, God of bleakness and abyss, Why have you forsaken us? Ian Miller

Just A Few Words About Fred: I met Fred a few times, both when he was in the West Midlands and at his home in the Lake District. I remember him around the time in 1984 when Graham Spicer became our Minister, and noticing that he was wearing a CND badge managed to have a few words with him about that. He said something along the lines of we all have to do our bit. He officiated at Graham's induction at Christ Church on 21st January A few years ago Maurice and I were invited to a Golden Wedding celebration in Olton, and were surprised to meet Fred there as well; the link was Amnesty International, in which Fred was very active. More recently, in 2006, we were holidaying in Irene Bounds' cottage in Penrith in the Lake District, which happens to be very near to where Fred and Anthea had settled. We went to a service at Penrith URC and discovered that there was to be a special event during the week, when Gillian R Watson, the author of Fred's biography, ("Healing the Nations: Fred Kaan - the Man and his Hymns") was to be a special guest to talk about Fred and his life, which was a most interesting evening. (Mary has a copy of the book if you'd like to borrow it). Whilst there he and Anthea invited us to coffee in their lovely house, with the most fantastic view of the lake and the mountains, brilliantly captured in the mirror above the fireplace. Fred was suffering from Alzheimer's by this time, and was aware of it, but we had a lovely conversation with him. He told us about when he was in Plymouth and had a small book of some of his early hymns published. He still had some copies, and he gave us one each, and was very flattered when asked to sign it! A very lovely man. Pam Archer 5

Pilots and Warwick Castle I recently received some information, which may be of general interest. As you may already know, the URC, along with many other churches such as The Methodist Church and Church of Scotland, has a non-uniformed organization called the Pilots. It is open to children from the age of 4 years and you may have noticed that we have a small group, within our church, heading for that age! If you would like to know more about the organization, look it up on The Pilot Promise is I will learn, pray and serve, all I can, with the world wide church of Jesus Christ. I have their magazine, The Bridge if you want to see something of the different groups mostly around the country. The United Reformed Church House in Tavistock Place has the Pilots Desk. I have an invitation for our church folk, young and old, to join with Pilots from all over the country, on a visit to Warwick Castle on the 15th May next year. They are hoping that church groups and friends will make up half of the number attending. The tickets will be 8 for Pilots and I think it is 11 for adults as special low prices have been negotiated. The day will start and finish at the Pilots Arena Stage where there will be worship for everyone, including live music. Since this event is on our doorstep, I wondered if it would be possible to make up a small group (or a large one!!) from our church? It would be an opportunity to see and meet Pilots and, perhaps, think about the possibility of forming a group. We need to send in our request for tickets by 29th February so if you are interested, please don t wait to be asked but tell me and I will gather numbers together. Pat Christmas Shoe Box photo. Some people left before the photograph was taken so, for the record, the following Ladies came and helped on the day: Pam H, Sandra, Rosemary, Christine K, Alison, Glenys, Margaret M, Edna, Moira, Mary V, Helen C, Stephenie, Chris and Mary, and Kath, 6

Poppies, Remembrance and Bombs A Good article from Les about the Poppies, Remembrance and Bombs! We do forget that suffering goes on and on, not just occasionally. I can never travel along the Warwick or Stratford Roads around Sparkhill and Sparkbrook travelling towards Birmingham without smelling the terrible burning, and seeing in my mind s eye the devastation of the bombing. The horror of finding that wonderful clock in Birmingham market no more! During the war the No 187 bus ran every two hours, the Bullring had a very steep cobbled road, and the terminus was at St Martins Church. I had to attend the Eye Hospital which meant missing school one day a week. My Mother and I arrived at the Hospital the morning after a bomb had fallen through the roof, the Eye Surgeon informed my Mother that I needed an operation that day to save the sight in my right eye, quite an experience being operated on and looking through a great hole in the roof! The Past. Now with a new year, we have to lean on the lord even more. May the Lord bless us all. Kath Vale Bishop James Edward Lesslie Newbigin (December 8, January 30, 1998) was a Church of Scotland missionary serving in the former Madras State (now Tamil Nadu), India, who became a Christian theologian and bishop involved in missionology, ecumenism, and the Gospel and Our Culture Movement. 8th December 2009 will be the centenary of the birth of Lesslie Newbigin. He is arguably the best-known person from the United Reformed Church around the world. We shall be marking the centenary of his birth on the 11th December in partnership with Queen's College Birmingham (the venue for the event). Dr Veli-Matti Karkkainen of Fuller Theological Seminary will be the main speaker and our hosts will be the Bishop of Birmingham David Urquhart and the Moderator of the URC West Midlands Synod Roy Lowes Murdoch MacKenzie asked me to circulate details of a series of events in Scotland and to alert people to the big celebration in Birmingham on 11th December -- Thanks, Roberta Rominga 7

Church Family Happy Birthday to Rosina Forsythe 1st, Derek Hughes 1st, John Heatley 7th, Rosemary Hillyard 10th, David Hall 12th, Diana Dicker 14th, Christine Kane 18th, Sue Bateman 19th, Mary Vale 22nd,and Greta 28th.all December, and in January Happy Birthday to Isobel 4th, Clive 8th, Alison 14th, Stephenie 14th, Hamish 21st, Sue Heatley 28th, Pam Howells 29th and Graham Tall 31st. Congratulations to Sean Cunoosamy on recently gaining 14 GCSEs with two A s in Languages, the rest B s & C s. He is now attending Sixth Form College Solihull and studying Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, and French A levels. Well done Sean. Baptism Congratulations and welcome to a brother and sister: Dominic Gabriel Brian Freeman and Aisha Lydia Jeannette Benachour who were Baptised on October 11th. Unlike in Biblical days, though still in the Baptist Church; most Christian Churches baptise children with a Christening service long before said children are capable of rational thought as to their own beliefs. We rely on the promises of their parents and god parents, supported by Church members to nurture the child s Christan belief. Confirmation in the Anglican Church or Church Membership in the URC is the rite of passage into adult membership of the Church. In this case Dominic and Aisha came as young adults willing to affirm their belief in God. Theirs was truly a baptismal rather than a Christening service. Graham Tall 8

Shoe Boxes On Saturday November 14th the ladies met in the church for the Operation Shoebox fill up. Chris & Mary had already covered the boxes with pretty Christmassy paper a time consuming job, they had already got baskets with pens, crayons, coloured pencils, lead pencils, sharpeners, erasers, combs, soap, flannels, toothpaste and brushes, cuddly toys, boys and girls toys, etc. See Right Sandra had also been her usual busy self knitting woolly hats, scarves, purses etc AND supplied the biscuits for our tea break. Thanks also to the people who provided shoe boxes already filled. Fifteen ladies helped on the day and all felt real satisfaction. Kath I would also like to thank everyone who helped, from transporting the fillings, filling the boxes, and transporting the finished items to Yeomans for collection at a later date. Thank you to Christ Church for their orders. A total of 68 boxes have been sent from us, and that s 68 children who will have a smile to their faces and be ensured they have gifts and love from us. Thank you again. Mary Kirwan 9

Who Are We Whilst belief in Christ is the underlying reason why people come to our Church: Our Church offers far more than the opportunity to worship. It offers friendship: Every visitor is welcomed; several times a year birthday/anniversary cake with flowers or book vouchers are given to celebrate members life events: We socialise, see next page and elsewhere in this magazine and many of our members start nattering even before they go into coffee (the coffee being served after every service in the Hall: We have a choir: And, if you look at the pictures on the previous and subsequent pages. You will find that in addition to our Sunday school we try to help others less fortunate than ourselves by providing Christmas shoe boxes, we organise a Toy service and use the collections at both the Carol and Christmas day services go to support an Indian Hospital. If you are not a member, come and visit us (the upside of the 9.30 start is that, even after staying for coffee there is still time to prepare a mid-day meal and have time for restful 10 activities like visiting the family etc. Graham Tall

Indian Meal Our Pre-Christmas Dinner This is the third year we have had an Indian Meal. Its origin is based on the fact that the Brasserie uses the original Church building situated on the High Street. The underlying structure remains true to its origin 11 as the first free church in Knowle. Chris was present in spirit alone

Our Country Walk Ending at The Black Boy Well, we cancelled the walk because of the poor conditions, but retained the social aspect had an excellent meal and enjoyed each other s company. Sunday School Just two of our children are shown. The picture they created on the right illustrates the lesson they learned: God s love has no beginning and no end Dog Care. Helen regularly brings a dog to our services. The colour varies, but not the dog s size or friendly demeanour. The reason is that all Helen s dogs are 12 guide dogs for the blind

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel John Mason Neale was a born scholar. Before he was ten, he edited his own handwritten family magazine. As a shy but strong-minded young man, he could often be seen making a brass-rubbing or collecting architectural details in country churches he visited on his walking-tours. He grew up to love the Middle Ages and the medieval church, the early church fathers and the lives of the saints. One small girl at his orphanage said that Mr Neale (then in his forties) must be very old, to have talked to so many saints and martyrs. This Advent hymn is from a Latin original of doubtful date. As the greatest of all translators of hymns, Neale helped to disprove his friend Benjamin Webb's words: 'I am more and more convinced that the age of hymns has passed'! O come, O come, Emmanuel, And ransom captive Israel. That mourns in lonely exile here, Until the Son of God appear. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel O come, thou Rod of Jesse, free Thine own from Satan's tyranny; From depths of hell thy people save, And give them victory o'er the grave. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel O come, thou Key of David, come, And open wide our heavenly home; Make safe the way that leads on high, And close the path to misery. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel O come, O come, thou Lord of Might, Who to thy tribes, on Sinai's height, In ancient times didst give the law In cloud and majesty and awe. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel O come, thou Dayspring, come and cheer Our spirits by thine advent here; Disperse the gloomy clouds of night, And death's dark shadows put to flight. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel From the Latin; translated by JOHN MASON NEALE ( ) 13.

'Nativity' What were their thoughts, as they travelled afar, Those three wise men who followed the star, That lit up their way with unwavering gleam When they met up and journeyed to fulfil their dream. How great were the fears of those shepherds that night, When the angel appeared, as they cowered in fright And urged them to haste to a stable so bare To find and to worship the babe lying there. What were the hopes of that young mother then As weak from her labour, she views all those men. Both rich and the poor, kneeling there at the sight Of her child, newly born in the still of that night. The wise men brought gifts and the richness of gold The shepherds gave warm fleece to keep him from cold, But neither the richest or humblest bowed there Could realise God's gift in this, His Son so fair. What are our thoughts on this Day of Days As we celebrate Christ's birth with our carols and praise? Do we glance at the Cross and recall with some shame That this babe grown to manhood, hung there in our name? How great is our faith as down through the age The story is told with the turn of each page As history rolls on, glows the Truth ever bright Still, God so loves this world in His Son born that night! So sing all your praises, sing out with great joy Let allpeople know that the birth of this boy Bought our salvation when His life He gave And conquered forever the power of the grave! 14 With thanks to Jean, Les Bridgwater. Jean C. Frier

A Journey through the Bible with Tiglath~ 21 Leviticus Chapter 16 Onwards In The New English Bible Chapter 16 of Leviticus has as its title, The Day of Atonement (at-own-ment). The Israelites celebrate this great feast on the 10 th day of the 7 th month. Here we may digress to note the other great feasts. There are seven of them. It is interesting to realize that God made the world in s ix days and rested on the seventh. Therefore the Sabbath was a very special day indeed. Apart from the Day of Atonement the other set feasts were as follows The seventh day every week a day of rest for all. The Passover followed by seven days of Unleavened Bread in March and April. The Feast of First Fruits took place in April and seven weeks later Pentecost, also called the Feast of Weeks harvest festival connected with this was in June. During September and October time there were the Feast of Trumpets (New Year), the Day of Atonement and the Feast of Tabernacles which reminded the Israelites that they had lived in tents in the desert after the exodus from Egypt. On the Day of Atonement, to be at one with God the nation had to clean itself of sin. Aaron, the chief priest, had to be cleansed of his own sin before he could conduct ceremonies to cleanse the people from their sins. On this one day Aaron was allowed into the inner part of the tabernacle where the Ark of the Covenant was kept. Read Chapter 16, it is full of fascinating details of how the ceremony of Atonement was carried out. None is more interesting than that of the scapegoat. This was one of two goats that were specially selected. One was sacrificed, the other had the two hands of Aaron laid upon it. By this act be laid all the sins of Israel onto the goat. A man then took the goat and let it go into some barren waste, presumably to die. Continued on overleaf 15

Tiglath continued: In 1854 the Pre-Raphaelite artist William Holman Hunt painted a picture entitled The Scapegoat. He placed the goat on the shore of the Dead Sea. It has scarlet material wrapped round its horns as a symbol of sin. All around the goat are signs of death the bones of former scapegoats, the lifeless water, the salty ground and the bare mountains. We must now hurry along on our journey so please do read Chapters In them you will find rules about conduct, penalties for disobedience, the appointed seasons, various other penalties, especially for blasphemy. The one who blasphemes is to be taken out of the camp and stoned to death. We also, in Chapter 24, meet the concept of an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. And so we come to the end of Leviticus. A fascinating book, quite serious reading but it tells us so much about the religious and everyday life of the Israelites. It is well worth the effort. Next month we shall begin to travel through the Book of Numbers which covers the 38 years of the Israelites wandering in the wilderness. It ends with Moses seeing the Promised Land which he was not destined to enter until he appears in St Mark Chapter 9 verses 2 4 where we find him talking with Jesus. 17 Commitment for Life December Prayer Called to bear witness We are called to bear witness to the Good News that no one is a stranger or an outsider, and that in Jesus Christ all division and separation have been broken down. In the face of the worldwide crisis of AIDS, we are called to be one people, a whole people, none of whom is worthless. Yet hardness of heart, discrimination and oppression prevent us from being who God called us to be. As we prepare to confess our sins, we come to God in prayer. Lord of Compassion, we often represent you as a God of wrath. Yet, you are a God of love, raising us to life; and so we ask: Lord, have Mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you banish the fear that has often paralysed us. In responding to the needs of all of us who are affected by HIV and AIDS, When we falter, encourage us and strengthen us; and so we ask: Christ have mercy. Christ have mercy. Spirit of unity, you build us up when we break down; You unite when we divide; you comfort when we condemn; and so we ask: Lord have mercy. 18 Amusement To keep your mind clean and healthy, change it once in a while! The best vitamin for making friends is B1! K ids, Kids, Kids, after the christening of his baby brother in church, Jason cried all the way home in the car. His father asked him three times what was wrong, Finally, Jason replied, that preacher said he wanted us brought up in a Christian home and I wanted to stay with you guys. A wife invited some people to dinner, at the table she turned to her six year old daughter and said would you like to say grace? I wouldn t know what to say her daughter replied. Just say what you hear Mummy say the wife answered. The daughter bowed her head and said Lord, why on earth did I invite all these people to dinner. A Sunday school teacher asked her children as they were on the way to church service, why is it necessary to be quiet in church? One bright girl replied because a lot of people are sleeping. Christian Symbols See Indian Meal Picture in centre pages. Fish: the fish -- ever-watchful with its unblinking eyes -- was one of the most important symbols of Christ to the early Christians. In Greek, the phrase, Jesus Christ, Son of God Savior, is Iesous Christos Theou Yios Soter. The first letters of each of these Greek words, when put together, spell ichthys, the Greek word for fish (ICQUS ). This symbol can be seen in the Sacraments Chapel of the Catacombs of St. Callistus. Because of the story of the miracle of the loaves and fishes, the fish symbolized, too, the Eucharist (see stylized fish symbol on the Indian Meal picture). Chi-Rho or sigla : the letters X and P, representing the first letters of the title Christos, were eventually put together to form this symbol for Christ ( Chi is pronounced Kie ). It is this form of the Cross that Constantine saw in his vision along with the Greek words, TOUTO NIKA, which are rendered in Latin as In hoc signo vinces and which mean in this sign thou shalt conquer. The third shape, is an alternative form of the Trefoil: a stylized shamrock, such as St. Patrick used in evangelizing Ireland, the trefoil is a symbol of the Most Holy Trinity. Graham Tall 18
