3 Dear Follower of Christ, I rejoice you are with us for the 2017 Alabama Baptist Pastors Conference. I pray that you are growing in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. My expectant hope is that you and I will be renewed, encouraged, and strengthened as we continue to run the race Christ has set before us. Our theme this year is Finish. The Apostle Paul spoke to his beloved Timothy, I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith (2 Timothy 4:7). It matters not if you are a beginner in this race or have been running for Jesus many years, the important thing is that each of us finish this race and finish it well! Oh, for us to hear the beautiful words of our Savior, well done good and faithful servant. Our speakers today are men who are running this race with you and me. Some of them are nearing the finish line. Others may have a way to go. Each one, however, is committed to Jesus Christ and shares the desire for the Great Commission to be fulfilled. Symbolically, let us put on our Gospel running shoes, allow the Holy Spirit to empower us, and run together the race in which we are called. In short, let s Finish! Running with you, Welcome to the Alabama Baptist Pastors Conference Rob Jackson 2017 Pastors Conference President Pastor of Central Baptist Church, Decatur 1

J.D. Greear J.D. Greear is the pastor of The Summit Church in Raleigh- Durham, North Carolina. The Summit is characterized by its gospel focus and sending culture. Depth in the gospel also leads to width in the mission. Under Greear s leadership, The Summit has grown from a plateaued church of 300 to one of nearly 10,000, making it one of Outreach magazine s top 25 fastest-growing churches in America for many years running. Seating capacity, however, is not the church s primary metric for success. Sending capacity is. Greear has led The Summit in a bold vision to plant one thousand new churches by the year In the last ten years, the church has sent out more than 650 people to serve on church planting teams in North Carolina, across the United States, and around the world. In April 2017, Greear s preaching ministry expanded to include Summit Life, a daily half-hour radio program on Moody Radio and Truth Network stations across the country. Greear has authored several books, including Gaining by Losing: Why the Future Belongs to Churches That Send (2015), Gospel: Recovering the Power that Made Christianity Revolutionary (2011), Stop Asking Jesus into Your Heart: How to Know for Sure You Are Saved (2013), and Jesus, Continued Why the Spirit Inside You Is Better Than Jesus Beside You (2014). Greear completed his Ph.D. in theology at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He also served among Muslim people groups in Southeast Asia with the International Mission Board. He and his wife, Veronica, live in Raleigh. Together they are raising four children: Kharis, Alethia, Ryah, and Adon. 3

Born in San Angelo, Texas, he was reared in a ranching family and at the age of 10 received Jesus Christ as his Savior. In 1954, Hanks and his family were vacationing in Scotland and several members of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA) team happened to be staying at the same hotel. He met Billy Graham and Grady Wilson (Billy Graham s associate evangelist) and they became life long friends. Grady discipled Hanks for over 23 years until he went home to be with the Lord. At the age of 20, Hanks became BGEA s first intern. He traveled throughout the world with the Billy Graham team learning crusade evangelism and became an experienced evangelist in his own right having preached in 29 countries. Later, when Hanks was 35, he was invited to serve as a minister at large for BGEA. In this capacity, he equipped thousands of disciple-makers to minister to new Christians. Realizing the importance of life-to-life training while in seminary, he began discipling men who had a passion for carrying out the Great Commission. Together, they developed disciple-making materials for churches to use throughout the world. Hanks graduated from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, with a master of divinity and received honorary doctorates from California Baptist University in Riverside, California, and Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Missouri. In 1972, The International Evangelism Association was born and today it guides the highly effective ministry of Becoming a Disciple-Maker. Hanks actively ministers widely throughout the world and at West Texas Ranch for Christ. The Becoming a Disciple-Maker Lead Church strategy and friendship-based equipping process is now being taught for credit in Christian seminaries in North America, South America, and Western Europe. 22 Great Grandma s apple pie recipe has been passed down for generations. but what are we leaving behind? Maybe Great Grandma didn t expect a portion of her legacy to be her delicious baking. But today, she is remembered in part for generously giving her time and using her love of cooking to bring joy to others. Like her, we are all leaving a legacy. Whether we purposefully pour into the next generation or they simply follow our footsteps, our legacy is being written every day. But how many of us intentionally think about leaving a legacy for God, the One who gave us everything in the first place? What if our legacy became less about how others will remember us and more about what others know of Christ because of us? Lega c Providing for Your Family, Ministry yhonoring Your Faith.
