Daylight Church Louisville, KY Church Plant Proposal Daylight will be a church based on Proverbs 4:18: The path of the just is like the first gleam of dawn, shining brighter and brighter until the full light of day. We will seek to make disciples of Jesus the Light through a four fold ministry concept creating an outward focused community, in love with God, and empowered by the Holy Spirit. Humanitarian Service Loving God with our Hearts Serving the least of these, Daylight will seek to become involved in Louisville area charitable works and organizations. The ultimate goal would be that the Louisville community one day would say, Where would we be without the work of Daylight Church? Personal Devotion and Worship Loving God with Our Souls An emphasis will be placed on each believer being responsible for his or her own devotion and worship, whether in private or in a corporate setting. Consistent teaching and regular, practical opportunities to experience God will be offered. Apologetics and Study Loving God with Our Minds Services will include times of confronting the difficult matters of faith, and special events will include debates between theists and atheists, seminars on apologetics, and the like. We ultimately will conduct apologetics conferences in the Louisville area. Missions and Outreach Loving God with Our Strength Through giving and going, Daylight members will spread the Light of Jesus not only to the Louisville area but to the ends of the Earth. Our church culture will always be one of training and releasing people to go and fulfill God s calling in their lives. Light for Louisville Light for the world. (John 12:46) 2
H.L. and Kara Hussmann Lead Planters H.L. Hussmann grabs an audience and doesn t let go. But he s not just a fantastic presenter. What he has to say is critical to every human being! H.L. will engage you with the evidence that God exists, Jesus rose from the dead, and that your purpose in life is to know God, now and forever. Dr. Frank Turek Founder and President CrossExamined.com speaker and author/co author of I Don t Have Enough Faith to be an Atheist, Correct NOT Politically Correct, and Legislating Morality H.L. is one of the sharpest young leaders in the Fellowship of the Assemblies of God. He has fine tuned his callings & giftings and will bless beyond measure any open door venue he is granted. It is an honor to have a minister of this quality in Kentucky. Pastor Joseph Girdler KY District Superintendent Assemblies of God H.L. Hussmann graduated from Murray State University in 1996 with a degree in Engineering Physics. He served as a full time campus minister with Chi Alpha Christian Fellowship until 2006, when he stepped down to a part time role to pursue writing and public speaking as ministry. He is the author of God s Greatest Passion: Every Christian, Everywhere, Sharing Jesus and Letters From a Martyred Christian both of which have been printed in special editions and distributed by AG U.S. Missions. Letters From a Martyred Christian was a gold medal EBooks Award winner and a finalist in the Eric Hoffer Book awards. H.L. has served as a writer on assignment for Outreach Magazine from 2008 to the present, served as a member of the U.S. Missions Strategic Planning Committee with the Assemblies, was the sole contributor and designer of On Target (the quarterly newsletter of XA USA Missional Task Group) from , graduated at the Journeyman level with Jerry Jenkins Christian Writers Guild, and is the founder and president of ReadyTracts.com. He has travelled the U.S. and many countries overseas, leading mission groups and teaching at conferences, churches, and retreats. He was recently featured in Pentecostal Evangel for his involvement in unearthing ancient Biblical documents at the Day of Discovery with Josh McDowell, Lee Strobel, Mark Mittleberg, and many other well known apologists. He currently is working with Josh McDowell and Kent Hulbert on a project for Youth Alive. He has extensive teaching and administrative experience that has prepared him for the thick skinned demands of church planting. H.L. s wife, Kara, received her Bachelor s and Master s degrees from Murray State and currently works as an ESL (English as a Second Language) instructor and advisor at MSU. She and H.L. have been married for nearly 8 years, and their 5 year old son is either Spiderman or Batman depending on when you catch him (if you can). H.L. and Kara direct the ministry to international students with MSU Chi Alpha. 3
Louisville, KY In Jefferson County, where Louisville is the hub, there are currently almost 750,000 residents. Current city data shows that only 54.6% are associated with a religious congregation. At least 340,500 people are unchurched. There are an additional 750,000 people in surrounding counties. Louisville is, as shown to the right, the number one city in America for luring and retaining college educated residents between the ages of 25 39, which would be the target market of Daylight. Our express intent would be to reach young, creative professionals and instill in them the need to reach the least of these and everyone, everywhere. Our initial geographic target would be the expanding (booming) east side of Louisville. As Louisville is restricted by the Ohio River to the north and west, expansion should occur primarily to the east and south. As it is now, residents state that everywhere is a 20 minute drive in the Louisville area. If we are strategically planted in the expanding East, we should be within easy driving distance of nearly everyone in Louisville for many years to come. Louisville was designated the #1 US travel destination for 2013 by Lonely Planet. It is an eclectic city with a revitalized downtown, activities galore, exceptional restaurants, and a cost of living that is much lower than most American cities and regions. Financially, there may be no more strategic and affordable place to plant a vibrant, growing church than Louisville, KY. LOUISVILLE, KY NUMBER ONE TRAVEL DESTINATION IN U.S 2013 We (H.L. and Kara) believe that God has prepared us for this exact moment and we currently have a team of 6 other people who will be working with us. Louisville is perfectly situated for God to raise up a church that will not only impact tens of thousands of lives in the immediate area, but also will act as a missionary hub. The long term vision of Daylight would be sending out hundreds of missions workers, bringing in thousands of people for conferences and training, and to plant churches all over the globe. While a vision so grand seems impossible through our effort, it won t be surprising at all to see God do something even bigger. We believe Louisville is the starting place of an amazing move of God. 4
Core Values BUILDING PEOPLE: We will help people reach their full potential. We want to maximize the potential of every life that connects with our community. People are our greatest asset and the goal of everything we do. OUTREACH: We believe Christian maturity is seen in outreach. God has called the church to create disciples (followers) of Jesus. Followers of Jesus share His passion for reaching people. REALITY AND RELEVANCE: We are who we are. We won't pretend to be something we're not. THRIVING: We will expand and grow. The more people who experience Jesus, the better. THOUGHTFUL COMMUNICATION: We will talk like normal people. Not everyone who attends Daylight has a religious background. They don t know the lingo, so we ditch it. SACRIFICE: We will pay a high price. We won t be afraid to ask people to make sacrifices. We will give up our lives for something larger than life. GENEROSITY AND PRUDENCE: We will honor God with our money. God will get us what we need, lead us in our decisions, and show us where to spend it. We will serve others with our financial resources. INTELLECTUAL RIGOR: We will use our brains. There are difficult questions faced by Christians, and we will address them. We will explore the intellectual side of faith. 5
Core Values (Cont d) FOCUS: We will major on the majors. There is a God. He came to earth as a man Jesus Christ. He is in the business of changing lives from the inside out. That is our point of focus. FEARLESSNESS: We will move forward without fear. We ll experiment, explore, engage, and experience. We ll try new things. If they don t work, we ll try something else. WISDOM: We want to know God s mind. We will seek God s solution in every situation. When we don t know specifics, we ll stick to His principles. DEVOTION: We surrender. We are committed to the Bible as God s inspired Scriptures and our greatest source of instruction. We will pray and seek God. We will worship Him in our words, songs, and activities. CALM TRUST: We can't change the world. God can. We will work hard and set goals, but we won't strive or stress. God is building Daylight. ORDERED FREEDOM: We expect a genuine move of God. We will believe for the supernatural ministry of the Holy Spirit in the midst of order and normalcy. COMPELLING EVENTS: We hate boredom as much as you do. This is a flash bang society and our events should keep one's attention. 6
Points of Light POINTS OF LIGHT are groups and events designed to create community, develop leaders, and provide practical outlets for our four pillars (humanitarian service, apologetics and study, devotion and worship, and missions and evangelism.) People are diverse. While one person likes scrapbooking, another likes grilling out. God calls some people to lives of intercessory prayer while calling others to street ministry or establishing orphanages. Our Points of Light groups and events are designed to be as diverse as the people God brings to Daylight. Our three categories, Explore, Connect, and Go will create a place where people connect with the Daylight community and invest in the individual passions God has created them to pursue. EXPLORE Groups and Events Find a safe and non judgmental place to ask questions or learn how to intellectually defend your faith. Whether it's "How can God allow suffering?" or ""Could a loving God send people to Hell forever?" these groups and events are designed to allow you to ask questions and receive honest and thoughtful answers. CONNECT Groups and Events Connect with God and other people through Bible studies, reading groups, worship meetings, or hobbies and interests. CONNECT groups and events are designed to connect people with God and the Daylight community. Whether it's finding a group of golfing buddies or a weekly Bible study, CONNECT is where it's at. GO Groups and Events The heart of Daylight's core values, our Go Groups and Events are where we believe Christian maturity flourishes. Whether it's visiting a local jail, feeding at a soup kitchen, or passing out church invitations downtown, our GO Groups are designed to take the love of Jesus outside church walls. 7
Projected Time Frame The initial goal date for launch at Daylight Church is set for October 19, Our target would be to launch with people based on our marketing plan and development of our core launch team. Because we realize launching too early is the 2nd most detrimental action in church planting (having a spouse who isn t on board is the 1st), our schedule remains flexible. January 2013 Fall 2013: Fundraising and team building. Also, website design (in progress DaylightChurch.com) and social networking with graphic design, logo, and branding development. H.L. will attend the All Access conference in Jacksonville, FL. Fall 2013: Relocate to Louisville area. Fall 2013 Easter 2014 (April 20, 2014): Relationship building, community outreach, and continued fundraising and team building. During this time we would secure a location. See our marketing plan for details. Easter 2014: Our first preview service followed by a BBQ get together a week later. (Developing our launch team.) Easter 2014 Fall 2014: Monthly preview events with follow up meetings. Continuation of marketing plan. October 12, 2014: I Don t Have Enough Faith to be an Atheist (Frank Turek) presentation most likely on the University of Louisville campus. Frank is a friend who has already penciled in the event. IDHEFTBA has drawn between 150 and 3000 people depending on location and marketing. October 17 18: Pre launch outreach with Chi Alpha teams. Door to door invitations possible block party. October 19, 2014: LAUNCH! Following Sundays: Follow up phone calls and visits with First Steps classes and Points of Light program initiated. 8
Marketing Plan Daylight s marketing plan will be multi faceted and will possibly include (depending on budget): Door to door (and other) surveys: H.L. and his team are committed to knocking on thousands of doors prior to launch. Visits will include a brief survey about church attendance and giveaways of thousands of signed copies of H.L. s latest book, Letters From a Martyred Christian. Church information will be stamped inside. Door hangers with surveys will be left and picked up later when no one is home. We will consider renting a mall kiosk for surveys during colder months. We possibly will provide hand written follow up. Trade shows, giveaways, and free signings: We will keep our finger on the pulse of the Louisville community, looking for any opportunity to connect with people. We will give away coffee, water, and books. Media Connections: We will seek to establish connections with paper, digital, and T.V. outlets for as much free publicity as we can get. We will attempt a free book giveaway at a local mall, giving away hundreds or thousands of books. We will send press releases for major events. Community Opportunities (both online and otherwise): Meetup.com allows a connection with groups such as New2Lou, Louisville Eclectic Events, the Louisville Movie Club, and the Louisville Social Club. We will consider starting a Louisville Geocaching group. We will be intentional about every connection we can make, from golf scrambles to sermon preparations at the same coffee shop every week. We will look for opportunities for engagement in online forums and calendars. Mass Mailing: Experience has shown other church planters that a four card mailing to 30,000 homes will likely result in at least 150 first time guests to a new church. Our goal would be mailings for preview services and larger mailings for the I Don t Have Enough Faith to be an Atheist event and the launch. Pre movie slides Ads in high school sports programs Partnership with local Chick Fil A (Papa Johns?) to hand out flyers QR Code bumper stickers for all team members Brochures and custom Christian tracts from ReadyTracts.com Ads in home owners association newsletters Billboard rental A Frame signs on service days Passing out flyers at retail outlets (with permission) Free food giveaways at tailgate parties for Louisville Cardinals Night projector on side of a large building (Possibly during Clifton area Trolley tours) Signs in area businesses 9
