Although I stopped breathing during the first part of the surgery, I was quickly revived and remember nothing. All in all the surgery seems successful. I do appreciate the many prayers. Sincerely, Mike Henry Members of St. Paul s, Thank you so much on behalf of my entire family for the help, love and support we receive daily, but particularly as we celebrate the life and share our sadness in the death of our mother and grandmother. 5 THE COMMUNICATOR or better known as Dave Bland. I told you earlier that there would be more and here they are... Things You Can Do EVERY Sunday to Encourage St. Paul s Church 5. Involve Yourself in Ministry. Don t sit back and think someone else will do it. Every person should be serving in some area of the local church. God did not call us to be onlookers or spectators. Roll up your sleeves, and get with it. Show up for Sunday School, clean a bathroom, paint an office, teach a class, get in the choir there is plenty to be done. 6. Love on the Youth. One of the greatest investments you can make to St. Paul s is to love the young people. Encourage them and show them Jesus in your life. Let them know that you care, and that you are thankful for their place in the church. 7. Worship with a Thankful Heart. Don t just show up, show up with a ready heart to worship. One of the greatest problems we have in this generation is dry, cold, religion. Make a joyful noise unto the Lord. Raise your hands, lift your voice, say Amen get ready to praise, honor, and worship the King of kings! 8. Live Right. The worst thing you can do for St. Paul s is to bring a reproach by the way you live. Refuse to adopt the secular principles of our day. Be holy, be separated, be compassionate, be kind, and be Christ-like, not just on Sunday mornings! Now that you have read these, go back to the September Epistle and reread 1-4 and put them together with these. You didn t delete it did you? :) 9-12 will come next month. But don t wait until then, start doing the first 8 now! Some things to ponder with your morning coffee or juice Acts 20:28 Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood. You may speak but a word to a child, and in that child there may be slumbering a noble heart which shall stir the Christian Church in years to come. - Charles Spurgeon Football is like life, it requires perseverance, self-denial, hard work sacrifice, dedication and respect for authority Vince Lombardi
6 WALKING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF JESUS Respectfully submitted by David Bland Bishop Carcaño comes to us from the California-Pacific Conference where she has served for the last four years. During Bishop Carcaño's tenure in the California-Pacific Conference, their budget has finished in the black the past four years, and this past year, for the first time in many, they fulfilled their connectional apportionment giving at 100 percent. Additionally, they streamlined their ministry structure, and fully staffed their conference ministry team with called and skilled leaders. Bishop Carcaño is a prophetic leader in our denomination who is committed to full inclusion, and the call of Amos to "let justice roll like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream. We look forward to Bishop Carcaño's leadership, as we continue to work with the gifted clergy and laity of the California-Nevada Conference towards our three foundational goals: Equipping congregations to develop clear paths to discipleship, with depth and relevance to their own context; Creating a culture of collaboration and innovation; and Creating new places for new people, until all people are fully included in the life of the Church. Minerva Garza Carcaño was born in Edinburg, Texas. She did her undergraduate work at the University of Texas at Pan American, and then earned her Masters of Theology at Perkins School of Theology. Ordained in 1976 she has served congregations in Texas, New Mexico and California. In 1986, she became the first Hispanic woman to be appointed a United Methodist district superintendent in the continental United States serving in West Texas and New Mexico. She was then appointed the lead pastor of the South Albuquerque Cooperative Parish Ministry from 1992 to1996. From 1996 to 2001, she served as the Director of the Mexican American program at Perkins School of Theology. In 2001, she assumed the appointment of District Superintendent to the greater Portland, Oregon area in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. On a national level, she has served on the former General Board of Education, the General Boards of Global Ministry and Church and Society, and the United Methodist Publishing House. She both served on and chaired the National Cooperative Parish Ministry Leadership Team of the UMC, and was the lead clergy delegate to both the 1996 and 2004 General Conferences. She has a long history of committed involvement in ministries with immigrants and refugees, the poor and US/Mexico border communities. She has encouraged and led congregations to be active in community organizing and to work ecumenically believing that communities hold the experience and wisdom to create a world of justice and peace if they will but come together. Minerva serves on the Board of the General Commission on Christian Unity and Interreligious Concerns, the National Plan for Hispanic and Latino Ministries and the General Conference Study Committee on the Relationship Between The United Methodist Church and the Churches of Latin America and the Caribbean. Minerva Garza Carcaño was elected to the episcopacy in 2004 by the Western Jurisdictional Conference of the United Methodist Church, the first Hispanic female ever elected bishop. She was assigned to the Phoenix Area on September 1, After 8 years, she was assigned to the Los Angeles Area in Minerva is married to Thomas Spaniolo, an immigration lawyer, and they are the parents of a teen-aged daughter, Sofia. More can be found at
