3 SCANDALS IN THE ROMAN CATHOLIC AND SOME PROTESTANT CHURCHES ARE A WAKE-UP CALL TO TRUST ONLY IN CHRIST for Salvation John Carter answers your TOUGH QUESTIONS about SEX, MONEY, PREACHERS, THE GOSPEL, and EVANGELISM Q: Should not preachers be honest and true? A: Absolutely. Those who teach the Gospel ought to be holy men and women of God. Many are, and we should not condemn the many because of the sins of the few. Q: What about the scandals in the church? Pedophiles, sex perverts, adulterers, liars, cheats, thieves, and con artists? A: Tragically the Church has too often silently condoned unrighteous and wicked acts. But Judgment is coming. The Vatican has a long history of pedophiles who preyed upon the innocent. Protestant churches to a lesser degree have also been guilty. Pedophiles deserve to be in prison, along with other criminals, including those who rob people of their hard earned savings. Q: What is your assessment of the current religious situation? A: Some of the very best people I have met anywhere are church leaders. Some religious organizations are, however, often plagued by slick con artists who prey on gullible people. Some TV evangelists rob the flock while using the name of Jesus as a sales technique. The Jesus Business, as some call it, is big business here in the United States. 3

4 Q: Are there some religious leaders who have become wealthy through dishonest means? A: I don t know if the means they use are legally dishonest but I do know that profiting financially by using Jesus is wrong and unethical. A minister or leader of a ministry has the right to a living wage. It should be enough to live comfortably. But to become personally wealthy through the Gospel of Christ is to betray Jesus as Judas did for 30 pieces of silver. I know that some will laugh and scoff, but that is how I see it. The Prosperity Gospel is an ungodly sham. It is a disgrace. Q: What about the sex scandals we sometimes hear about among TV preachers? A: There is an old saying my mother taught me: The mills of God grind slowly, but they grind exceeding small. Mum also said, It will all come out in the wash. You can t hide a bad smell forever. A rotting carcass will make its presence known sooner than later. Also remember that unbelievers in the media delight in pointing out the sins of Christians while often guilty of greater violations of God s Law. Q: What moral standards should I expect of a TV evangelist, pastor, or church leader? A: Integrity This old-fashioned value is needed more than ever. Honesty People are as good as their word. Truthfulness A liar will be shut out of the Kingdom. See Rev. 22:15 Purity Fornicating pastors should be fired, not just transferred. Accountability No church leader is above the Law. Church business should be transparent. Faithfulness Religious leaders should be faithful to the Gospel and the saving of souls, not lording it over the congregation. Graciousness We are called to administer grace and help the hurting. When we stumble, He is there to lift us up, every day, every time. 4

5 Q: Some TV evangelists talk in tongues and make a great show of piety. How can I avoid deception? A: Use your common sense. A grown man or woman uttering silly syllables is deceived and deceiving. Even the devil can look pious. The big give away is when the TV evangelist makes promises he can t keep (like healing you), and asks you to send him a big offering as a condition for receiving the blessing. Beware of over religious, fast-talking, smooth as butter, crying, charismatic con artists. Be wise to these frauds and tricksters. Q: How can I tell the difference between the phony and the genuine? A: Be spiritually discerning and ask God for wisdom. Jesus said, By their fruits you will know them. Don t be naive. Keep your wits about you. The world is full of smiling, charismatic, religious con artists. Look below the surface and read your Bible every day. Support the genuine, boycott the bogus.
