3 3 The Dorcas Society: Thank you to everyone who participated in Dorcas in any way. It was a great year! We had a great outing to Coopers Hawk Winery. The food was excellent and the service was outstanding. And, of course, the wine was tasty. Our next meeting is September 6 th at 7PM in the Fellowship Room. This is our wine and cheese tasting meeting. Come and join us for a great time. Our prayers and heartfelt sympathy go out to Erna and her family on the loss of her daughter, Robin. Please keep them in your prayers. Sunday School: Sunday School has taken a vacation from classes, but has not taken a vacation from Church. Remember to join us in Worship at 9:30AM every Sunday morning. Dinner and a Movie: Dinner and a Movie will resume on September 11 th with "Hatchi". Save the date. Who and What are the Elders of St. Johns? We are church laypeople elected by the congregation to serve in the roles of supporting the pastor in his ministry, assisting him in divine services, being a resource to our brothers and sisters in Christ for help in any need they might have, guiding the congregation to be in the word and receive Christs gifts of confession, absolution, and the sacrament of his body and blood. We also serve in greeting brothers and sisters at divine services, attending church events, and generally helping wherever we see a need. Who we are can be found on our bulletin board at the bottom of the stairs going into Ellinger hall. Our phone numbers are listed there also with our pictures and the congregation alphabet we cover in our zone calling congregational contact efforts. Ladies Book Club: The Ladies Book Club did not meet in June. As a result, at our July meeting, we will be discussing our selection for June: I Am Malala - The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and was Shot by the Taliban by Malala Yousafzai and our July selection: See Me by Nicholas Sparks. I Am Malala is the memoirs of the girl who, when the Taliban took control of the area where she lived in Pakistan, bravely spoke out. She refused to be silenced, fought for her right to an education, and was shot in the head yet survived. This book tells of brave parents who have a fierce love for their daughter in a culture that prizes sons, and the journey which that daughter takes from a remote valley in Pakistan to the United Nations in New York. See Me is described as a deeply human story about starting over and dealing with the complexities of life. Colin Hancock has a past filled with violence and bad decisions. He is pursuing a teaching degree and leading a quiet life when he meets Maria Sanchez, a successful lawyer with her own dark past. Love springs up, but is challenged by the past and ominous events in the present.. With summer here, many of you may be looking for some reading suggestions. Here is a list of the Ladies Book Club selections for the remainder of our current schedule: August In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex by Nathaniel Philbrick September The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson (Please note, the switch in order for the October and November selections) October The Witches - Salem 1692 by Stacy Schiff November A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman December The Light Between the Oceans by M.L. Stedman January The Drummond Girls - A Story of Fierce Friendship Beyond Time and Chance by Mardi Link A synopsis of the current book will be included in the Eagle for that month and in the weekly bulletins prior to each meeting. Contact Karen Buhler if you would like to receive a complete synopsis of all the books. The Ladies Book Club meets the last Tuesday of each month at 7PM. We have an interesting discussion of the book of the month followed by delicious refreshments. We welcome visitors whether you attend only occasionally or become a regular participant in the Book Club.

6 6 July 2016 Stewardship Newsletter from the LCMS In our Lord s parable of the vineyard workers, the vineyard owner says to those who worked the longest, Or do you begrudge my generosity (Matthew 20:15)? It s an unfortunate translation. It s not wrong, but it doesn t give us the full picture. What the vineyard owner actually says is this: Or is your eye evil because I am good? Earlier in Matthew s Gospel, Jesus said, The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness (Matthew 6:21 23). This statement comes right in the middle of our Lord s teaching about giving. He said, Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money (Matthew 6:19 24). Having an evil eye does not let in the light. Having an evil eye means that we are so focused on what we don t have, that we are unable to rejoice in what God has given. An evil eye makes us distressed when we see others prosper. It makes us rejoice when others suffer. An evil eye makes us so love ourselves and our money, that we don t want to share with others; we don t want to give of what we have because we are so focused on keeping what we have and getting what we don t. Whereas a good eye is an eye that lets the light in so that our lives are filled with it. This light shines upon all that we have and reveals that it comes from our Father s divine goodness and mercy. A good eye that lets in the light, unencumbered by the darkness, so that we have a good will, a benevolent disposition, and a genuine happiness to see others prosper and the desire to be part of it. Jesus came to give you a good eye and to take away the darkness that fills your life. Christ our Lord, through His death and resurrection, has forgiven your sin, removed your evil eye and given you new eyes that let in His light and truth. For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich (2 Corinthians 8:9). The reality is that you have all that you need and more. You have the love of God in Christ Jesus. You have the forgiveness of sins and life everlasting. You have house and home, all that you need for this body and life. So, lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy. And you will see that your hearts will follow, just as Jesus promised.
