1 K/1 st Grade Feb 17 Jesus Calms the Storm Bible Verse Jesus got up and ordered the wind and waves to be quiet. The wind stopped and everything was calm. Jesus asked His disciples, Why were you afraid? Don t you have any faith? (Mark 4:39-40) Teacher Enrichment This is the sixth lesson in the New School: Moments from Jesus Life series which explores scripture lessons from Jesus life on earth. As both human and divine, Jesus is our best example of what God wants us to be like as humans. This series examines how Jesus lived and the choices He made for His life. It was a dark and stormy night. Well, actually, it was a nice, sunny regular day, but then it BECAME a dark and stormy night! Well, dark and stormy DAY. Jesus was in a boat with His disciples and everything was fine, until it wasn t. The storm clouds came, the wind picked up, the waves rose and before they knew it their boat was tossing and tipping to the point of capsizing. The disciples are terrified and call out to a sleeping Jesus for help. With two simple words, be still, Jesus calms the storm. Fears can be like that storm and come up out of nowhere; other times we can see the storm clouds approaching. Regardless, fear can overwhelm us. A fear like heights can have a simpler answer stay on the ground. But a path out of the fear surrounding the illness of a loved one, job insecurity or a new school can be less clear. This is when we must call on Jesus to calm our fear and bring peace to our worry. In this lesson children will learn that it is normal for people to have fears, but we can ask Jesus to help calm them. They will understand the scary situation may not go away, but trusting in God can bring them peace in their hearts and minds. As you prepare for this lesson, consider what kind of storm is going on in your life that you need Jesus to calm. Are you putting your trust in God that He can bring you peace?

2 Before Class Begins Place the Sign In sheet and a pen where parents can see it upon arrival. Place the Joy & Concern cards, Time & Talent cards and pens where students can see them upon arrival. Check that you have supplies for this lesson: Arrival Activity, Sometimes I m Scared worksheet 1 per child Jesus Calms the Storm cutouts 1 set per child Brads 1 per child Place an arrival activity at each place on the table. Welcome SUPPLIES: Sign In sheet, Joy & Concern cards, Time & Talent cards, Attendance chart, stickers, pens, Sometimes I m Scared worksheet, crayons, Measuring chart, sharpie Greet each child individually as they arrive. Introduce yourself by name. Help children find or add their name on the attendance chart. Provide each child with a sticker to place in today s column on the attendance chart. Encourage children to complete a Joy or Concern card if they have a particular joy or concern they would like to express. Collect completed Joy & Concern cards. Encourage children to complete a Time or Talent offering card if they gave their time to God or used their talents to serve God or others during the previous week. Children should keep their own completed Time and Talent cards. If children bring monetary offering, they should keep it with them. Direct children to complete Sometimes I m Scared worksheet. Encourage conversation among the children and with you! Get to know the children in your classroom by asking about their week including school, activities and families. Introduce new children to each other and encourage friendships. Children s Worship SUPPLIES: Sign In sheet, Joy & Concern cards, Time & Talent cards

3 The Children s Worship Leader will direct your class to come to Ruth Hall at 9:20 or 11:05. Bring the Sign In sheet and completed Joy & Concern cards to Ruth Hall. Hand the Joy & Concern cards to the Children s Worship leader as you arrive. Have children bring their completed Time & Talent cards and any monetary offering. If additional children arrive while in Ruth Hall, have parents complete the Sign In sheet and remind parents that pickup is in Room 107. Encourage children to participate in Children s Worship and provide re-direction if necessary. Assist the Children s Worship leader as needed. At the conclusion of Children s Worship, have children line up and return to Room 107. The Lesson SUPPLIES: Completed Sometimes I m Scared worksheets, Jesus Calms the Storm cutouts, brads, crayons/markers, scissors Have children bring their completed Sometimes I m Scared worksheets to the carpet. Gather all the children in a circle on the carpet. As you are able, sit on the floor with them or use a chair as part of the circle. ASK: When you came in this morning, you each drew something that scares you. What did you draw on your paper and why? Allow children to share what they drew and why it scares them. ASK: What helps you when you are scared? Allow children to provide answers. (e.g. Parents, friends, praying, closing eyes, getting away from the thing, hiding) ASK: In today s Bible lesson, Jesus disciples were scared. What were they afraid of? (The storm, wind, thunder, waves) ASK: When the disciples were afraid of the storm, what did they do? (Tried to fix it themselves first, but then asked Jesus for help)

4 ASK: What did Jesus do? (Calmed the storm; Took away the fear) SAY: Whenever we feel afraid, we can give those worries and fears to God because He loves us. Sometimes scary things might happen, just like the storm in today s story. But we can trust that God will take care of us. SAY: Today we are going to make a craft to help us remember that Jesus calmed the storm and He can calm our fears. Show children the sample craft. Demonstrate how the sky changes as it is rotated. Provide each child with a Jesus Calms the Storm cutouts set. Direct children to color and cutout the boat and the sky. Assist children in attaching the boat and sky using a brad. Closing Lead the children in a closing prayer. You may say your own prayer, ask one of the children to say a prayer or use the one below. God, Thank you for providing Jesus as an example. Help us trust you to calm our fears when we are scared. Amen If time remains before parents arrive, encourage conversation between children and with you. This is another opportunity to build relationships with the children in your classroom!
