1 CONCORDIA LUTHERAN CHURCH 1 Concordia is the Church where the love of Christ is shared through our hearts, our hands, and our voices. SIXTH SUNDAY IN LENT PALM SUNDAY April 14, :00, 9:30, and 11:00 a.m. Oh sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things! -Psalm 98:1a AS WE GATHER (prepared by Jim Gann) Why would the Son of God, who had all the angels in Heaven at His command, who could heal the lame, bring sight to the blind and hearing to the deaf, who had command over the wind and the waves, humble Himself to be a servant to those around Him? After all, He was the King, the Messiah. Royalty and the very rich have servants do all the menial kind of work, don t they? But Jesus was no ordinary king. Jesus came into the world to be a Servant King. As a servant, He provided an example of how he wants us to respond to the love He first gave us. He wants us to swallow our pride and serve others, not just here in Church or our families, but within the community where we live. 2 People: Amen. 2 Pastor: Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. People: Hosanna to the Son of David. (The word Hosanna comes from the Hebrew Language and means, Save us, we pray ) THE HOLY GOSPEL: John 12:12-19 Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the 12th chapter. People: Praise to You, O Lord. (The Gospel is read) 12 The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. 13 So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel! 14 And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written, 15 Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey's colt! 16 His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him. 17 The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. 18 The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign. 19 So the Pharisees said to one another, You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him. Pastor: This is the Gospel of our Lord. People: Praise to You, O Christ.

People: Amen. Pastor: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. (1 John 1:8) People: But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9) (Silence for reflection on God s Word and for self-examination) CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Pastor: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. People: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve nothing but punishment. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may live our lives as Your redeemed and forgiven people, and be salt and light to a world who needs You. Amen. Pastor: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained

ALL : Most merciful God, as the people of Jerusalem, with palms in their hands, gathered to greet Your dearly beloved Son when He came into His Holy City, grant that we may ever hail Him as our King and, when He comes again, may go forth to meet Him

6 with trusting and steadfast hearts and follow Him in the way that leads to eternal life; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 8 PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Pastor: Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, and for all people according to their needs: Heavenly Father, as Your Son humbled Himself for our salvation, give to each of us and to every member of Your Church a confident faith in Christ s Passion for us, so that during this Holy Week and throughout our lives we would humbly entrust ourselves and all those in our care to You. Lord in Your mercy, People: Hear our prayer. Pastor: Heavenly Father, Your Son promised that when He was lifted up, He would draw all people to Himself. Turn unbelievers from their false gods to You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. Work through chaplains and missionaries. Give to each of us the courage to speak of our King, who comes righteous and having salvation. By the power of Your Gospel, put faith-filled hosannas into the mouths of people who now live without You. Lord in Your mercy, People: Hear our prayer. Pastor: Heavenly Father, in love for us Your Son became obedient unto death, even death on a cross. Teach us to look to You in every temptation so that drawing strength from You, we may resist Satan and our own sinful desires, obey Your commandments, and care for all people as Christ cares for us. Pastor: O Lord, we pray for those who are sick or hospitalized [especially ], that the Christ who heals all diseases, would mend and restore them, and strengthen their faith, Lord in Your mercy, People: Hear our prayer. 18 18 A wheelchair has been placed in the coat closet in the Narthex. It s purpose is to make it easier for those with cardiac, respiratory, or other problems to get to the bathrooms at the end of the hall or to make access to any part of the church easier for them. This wheelchair is not to leave church property so it is available for anyone who may need it in the building or parking lot area for transport. There is another wheelchair, several walkers, and wheeled walkers in the Medical Lending Closet for the convenience of anyone in the congregation who may need to borrow them for short term use at home. Anyone who has a light weight transport type wheelchair that they would like to donate to the Lending Closet, please see Jean Tichnell. Concordia serves four states and provides three Worship Services every Sunday in addition to other Ministries and activities. Communication is a challenge!
