5 Lift Him Up D Leon Barnett Founder/Executive Director 1 How to reach the masses, men of ev- ry birth, For an answer Jesus gave the key: Refrain: Lift Him up, Lift Him up, Still He speaks from eternity: 2 Oh! the world is hungry for the Living Bread, Lift the Savior up for them to see; Trust Him, and do not doubt the words that He said, I ll draw all men unto Me. Refrain: Lift Him up, Lift Him up, Still He speaks from eternity: 3 Lift Him up by living as a Christian ought, Let the world in you the Savior see; Then men will gladly follow Him who once taught, I ll draw all men unto Me. Refrain: Lift Him up, Lift Him up, Still He speaks from eternity: Boys -n- A.C.T.I.O.N. provides leadership and community engagement opportunities for young African-American boys in grades K-12 through service projects and step activities. Our gentlemen become culturally aware developing the ability to display positive character traits, despite negative imaging around young African-American boys. We model these activities during our monthly "Saturday Leadership Academies" in which our boys are receiving mentorship from role models that are doing positive things within the community. The mentoring protocol is modeled using the acronym A.C.T.I.O.N. Advocacy Our gentlemen represent young African-American boys that write letters to their Congressman, Mayor, City Counsel, and actively engage with concerns that effect Baltimore City neighborhoods and schools. Community - Baltimore City is considered a food desert and our boys will partner with local urban farmers to create a community garden that provides fresh fruits and vegetables to community members at local farmers markets. Teamwork These gentlemen work together as a team to perform step shows in Baltimore to spread the word about A.C.T.I.O.N. and what community members can do to make Baltimore a better place. Integrity Owning self Doing what gentlemen should even when no one s watching Optimism Breaking barriers by creating and maintaining positive images of African-American males in society. Nobility Adding to the positive legacy created by trailblazing African- American men. Imani-Angela Rose, Advisor 1432 N. Bond Street Baltimore, MD boysnaction@gmail.com

TODAY S AIM: To understand that being thankful is the normal response to what the Lord has done for us. INTRODUCING THE LESSON: The Lord pours out His blessings on us daily, but all of us have been the recipients of His special blessings from time to time. What are some special blessings you have experienced recently? What should these special blessings cause us to do? They should cause us to thank God for what He has done. We sometimes think of giving thanks only during the Thanksgiving holiday, but we will learn today from Luke 17 that people of faith should give thanks to God no matter what time of the year it is. PRACTICAL POINTS: 1. Those who are most in need of the Lord s help often keep themselves at a distance (Luke 17:11-12). 2. We all need to cry out for the Lord s mercy (Luke 17:13). 3. It is as we obey the Lord s Word that He does His work in our lives (Luke 17:14). 4. Thankfulness for what God has done for us should be fervent and public (Luke 17:15-16). 5. Showing gratitude is often the last thing on our minds when we experience God s goodness to us (Luke 17:17-18). 6. Jesus gives assurance to all who turn to Him (Luke 17:19). CONCLUDING THE LESSON: Our study of the ten lepers has shown us that a life of faith leads to giving thanks. The Samaritan offered thanks to the Lord personally. We can and should personally offer thanks to the Lord in our prayer times, but we also can do so when speaking to others. Giving thanks to the Lord in prayer is not difficult. Often, however, when speaking to others, especially to unbelievers, we are hesitant to thank the Lord for what He has done. Admittedly, we may feel a little awkward in openly expressing thanks to God when speaking to others, especially to unbelievers. But we should not let that fear hold us back. The Samaritan did not hesitate to come back and thank the Lord. Let us not hesitate to express thanks to God and not to others for what He has done for us.
