2 Preparation for Holy Communion to be used in private prayer before the service begins: Psalm 51 Miserere mei, Deus 1 Have mercy on me. 0 God, according to your steadfast love: according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions, 2 Wash me thoroughly. from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! 3 For 1 know my transgressions. and my sin is ever before me. 4 Against you, you only, have 1 sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment. 5 Behold I was brought forth in iniquity and in sin did my mother conceive me. 6 Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart. 7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall he clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8 Let me hear joy and gladness: let the bones you have broken rejoice. 9 Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. 10 Create in me a clean heart O God, and renew a right spirit within me. 11 Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. 13 Then 1 will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you. 14 Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God of my salvatio, and my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness. 15 O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. 16 For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. 18 Do good to Zion in your good pleasure; build up the walls of Jerusalem. 19 then you will delight in right sacrifices, in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings; then bulls will be offered on your altar 2

3 The holy water stoops are empty and the Blessed Sacrament is removed from the Tabernacle, which is left open and empty.. The processional Cross should be veiled in white. The Altar and Vestments are white. Introductory Rites Entrance Hymn: Priest: + In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. All: Amen Priest: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. All: And also with you. The Priest introduces to the Mass, followed by the Penitential Rite: Priest: My brothers and sisters, to prepare ourselves to celebrate the Sacred Mysteries, let us call to mind our sins. All: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen Priest: Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon us, pardon and deliver us from all your sins, confirm and strengthen us in all goodness, and keep us in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father. Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. The Collect: Priest: Let us pray. God our Father, You have invited us to share in the Supper which your Son gave to the Church to proclaim his death until he comes: May he nourish us by his presence, and unite us in his love; Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, One God, now and forever. 5 First Reading The Liturgy of the Word Exodus 12:1-4, NRSV Reader: A reading from the Book of the Exodus The LORD said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt: This month shall mark for you the beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year for you. Tell the whole congregation of Israel that on the tenth of this month they are to take a lamb for each family, a lamb for each household. If a household is too small for a whole lamb, it shall join its closest neighbor in obtaining one; the lamb shall be divided in proportion to the number of people who eat of it. This is how you shall eat it: your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it hurriedly. It is the passover of the LORD. For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike down every firstborn in the land of Egypt, both human beings and animals; on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the LORD. The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live: when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague shall destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt. This day shall be a day of remembrance for you. You shall celebrate it as a festival to the LORD; throughout your generations you shall observe it as a perpetual ordinance. New Testament reading I Corinthians NRSV Reader: A reading from the letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians: For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me." In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. (Pause) Reader: This is the word of the Lord. 7 John 13:1-17, 31b-35. NRSV Now before the festival of the Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. The devil had already put it into the heart of Judas son of Simon Iscariot to betray him. And during supper Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, got up from the table, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?" Jesus answered, "You do not know now what I am doing, but later you will understand." Peter said to him, "You will never wash my feet." Jesus answered, "Unless I wash you, you have no share with me." Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!" Jesus said to him, "One who has bathed does not need to wash, except for the feet, but is entirely clean. And you are clean, though not all of you." For he knew who was to betray him for this reason he said, "Not all of you are clean." After he had washed their feet, had put on his robe, and had returned to the table, he said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord--and you are right, for that is what I am. So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have set you an example that you also should do as I have done to you. This is the Gospel of the Lord All: Praise to you, O Christ The Sermon The Washing of Feet Silence may be kept, or a hymn, an anthem, or a psalm may be sung. The priest removes the chasuble, following the example of the Lord.. The washing of feet ends with this prayer. Priest: Let us pray. 7

8 Almighty Father, whose Son Jesus Christ taught us that what we do for the least of our brethren we do also for him: give us the will to be the servant of others as he was the servant of all, who gave up his life and died for us, yet is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. The Intercessions The intercessor should keep short silences between the petitions Priest: Let us pray, in the joy of the Lord's sacrament and in the sorrow of his Passion. Intercessor: Inspire the Church with the presence of Jesus Christ, here with us as he was with his disciples on the eve of his Passion... Draw us closer to you and to one another in the celebration of holy communion. (Pause) Lord in your mercy All: Hear our prayer Intercessor: Recalling your great acts of mercy, we pray for the world, for freedom from the slavery of injustice and oppression, and all that holds people back from fullness of life. (Pause) Lord in your mercy All: Hear our prayer Intercessor: As you gave to your disciples a new commandment of love, give the spirit of love to all among whom we live... Let the healing power of our communion spread beyond these walls, to make many whole. (Pause) Lord in your mercy All: Hear our prayer Intercessor: Have mercy on those who have not learned to love... Grant that those who feel themselves to be without value may be confi- 8

9 dent of their worth shown in Christ's saving death. (Pause) Lord in your mercy All: Hear our prayer Intercessor: We pray for those who in this world followed Christ and died in the assurance of his love... May the grace of his communion fortify us until we rest with them. (Pause) Lord in your mercy All: Hear our prayer Priest: As we come to the Table of the Lord, may these our prayers be united with the great Prayer of Thanksgiving, through Jesus the Lord. All: Amen The Liturgy of the Eucharist The Peace Priest: Lord Jesus Christ, you said to your apostles, I leave you peace, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins but on the faith of your Church, and grant us the peace and unity of your Kingdom, where you live and reign for ever and ever. All: Amen Priest: The Peace of the Lord be always with you All And also with you Priest: Let us offer one another a sign of peace HYMN The Offertory The gifts of the people are gathered and presented Priest: Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have this bread to offer, which earth has given and human hands have made. It will become for us the bread of life. All: Blessed be God for ever 9

10 Priest: Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have this wine to offer, fruit of the vine and work human of hands. It will become our spiritual drink. All: Blessed be God for ever Priest: Pray, brethren, that our sacrifice may be acceptable, to God the almighty Father. All: May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good, and the good of all his church. Prayer over the gifts Priest: Lord, make us worthy to celebrate these mysteries. Each time we offer this memorial sacrifice the work of our redemption is accomplished. We ask this through Jesus the Lord. All: Amen THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER Priest: The Lord be with you. All: Priest: All: And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Priest: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All: It is right to give him thanks and praise. Priest: Father, all-powerful and ever-living God, we do well always and everywhere to give you thanks through Jesus Christ our Lord. He is the true and eternal priest 10

11 who established this unending sacrifice. He offered himself as a victim for our deliverance and taught us to make this offering in his memory. As we eat his body which he gave for us, we grow in strength. As we drink his blood which he poured out for us, we are washed clean. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing.. All: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest Priest: Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness; grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit, and according to your holy will, these gifts of bread and wine may be + the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. 11

12 Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: Choir & Congregation: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again! Priest: Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption. As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. Remember, Lord, your Church in every land. Reveal her unity, guard her faith, and preserve her in peace. Remember John our bishop, and all who minister in your Church. Remember all your people, and those who seek your truth. Remember all who have died in the peace of Christ, and those whose faith is known to you alone; bring them into the place of eternal joy and light. Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of Mary, the virgin mother of God, with [the apostles, the martyrs, St Wilfrid and] all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. 12

Amen A PROFOUND SILENCE IS KEPT FOR A SPACE The Lord's Prayer Priest: Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us: All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen Breaking of the Bread The Celebrant breaks the consecrated bread (The following may be said) Priest: We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. All: Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread. The Agnus Dei may be used as the bread is broken Choir & Congregation: Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant us peace. Priest: This is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are we who are called to his supper. All: Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed. 13

14 COMMUNION ANTIPHON Priest: This body will be given for you. This is the cup of the new covenant in my blood; whenever you receive them, do so in remembrance of me. THE COMMUNION Communion Hymn: Anthem: During communion, the sidespersons light the candles on the Altar of Repose. After the distribution of communion, the ciborium with hosts for Good Friday is left on the Altar covered by a simple white veil, and Mass concludes with the prayer after communion. Priest: Let us pray. Almighty God, we receive new life from the supper your Son gave us in this world. May we find full contentment in the meal we hope to share in your eternal kingdom. All: Amen TRANSFER OF THE HOLY EUCHARIST Following the Prayer after Communion, the priest goes to the sedilia, takes off the Chasuble and put on the Cope. He goes to the front (peoples side) of the altar, and imposes incense (without a blessing), kneels and censes the Holy Eucharist on the Altar. The censer is returned to the servers. Then the servers place the Humeral Veil on the Priest, who rises, and takes the veiled ciborium in the folds of the humeral veil, turns to face the people, and the organ commences the hymn: Hymn 353 'Now my tongue, the mystery telling..' This hymn is played and sung VERY SLOWLY as the procession moves VERY SLOWLY down the center aisle, turning right, and down the north aisle to the Altar of Repose. The order of the procession is: Thurifer, Acolytes with lit candles, Crucifer, assistant minister, Priest carrying the Holy Eucharist. The last two verses (5 & 6) of the hymn are NOT SUNG until the priest has placed the Holy Eucharist Ciborium on the Altar of Repose. After the first two lines of verse 5 ('Therefore we before 14

15 him...sacrament revere:'), during which the priest, servers and congregation kneeling, bow profoundly, the priest then censes the Sacrament. At the end of verse 6, priest and servers rise, the servers candles are extinguished, and the altar party retreat in disordered haste and without ceremony, to the sacristy, along the front of the High Altar (without acknowledging it), to the sacristy (as many fled deserting Jesus after his arrest). The priest removes white vestments, puts on a purple stole, for the stripping of the Altars and removal of all movable objects of devotion in the Church. (Those which cannot be removed should be veiled either now or before the Good Friday Liturgy). During the Stripping of the Altars, the following psalm is said: Psalm 22: 1-19 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from helping me, from the words of my groaning? O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer; and by night, but find no rest. Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. In you our ancestors trusted; they trusted, and you delivered them. To you they cried, and were saved; in you they trusted, and were not put to shame. But I am a worm, and not human; scorned by others, and despised by the people. All who see me mock at me; they make mouths at me, they shake their heads; "Commit your cause to the LORD; let him deliver-- let him rescue the one in whom he delights!" Yet it was you who took me from the womb; you kept me safe on my mother's breast. On you I was cast from my birth, and since my mother bore me you have been my God. Do not be far from me, for trouble is near and there is no one to help Many bulls encircle me, strong bulls of Bashan surround me; they open wide their mouths at me, like a ravening and roaring lion. 15

16 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax; it is melted within my breast; My mouth is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to my jaws; you lay me in the dust of death. For dogs are all around me; a company of evildoers encircles me. My hands and feet have shriveled; I can count all my bones. They stare and gloat over me; they divide my clothes among themselves, and for my clothing they cast lots. But you, O LORD, do not be far away! O my help, come quickly to my aid! (The Choir now depart swiftly and in silence) ALL are encouraged to stay for a period of silent adoration in the Chapel, with those returning at their agreed times to watch with our Lord until midnight.
