KSC CONNECTION Koinonia Senior Care Newsletter January 2017 HAPPY NEW YEAR! How to Have a Miserable Worry a LOT. Worry over bad news or dwelling on aging, health issues, past failures, and regrets. 2. Compare yourself with others especially with those on Facebook or those who have more than you or have less wrinkles than you. 3. See the glass half empty be pessimistic 4. Seclude yourself from others reverting only to TV and social media for your human contact. 5. Eat whatever sounds good comfort foods, fast foods and processed foods are just easier. 6. Exercise only when you have to go to the bathroom LIFE PHRASES I challenge our staff and volunteers each year to come up with one word or phrase to adopt for the new year. Many look up Scripture, meanings, quotes, etc. to go along with their word. Here are some ideas to consider: Life is short: Live it well. TRUST Love God; Love Others BREATHE How to Have a Meaningful Trust God. Pray more! Proverbs 3:5-6 & Matthew 6:25ff 2. Seek contentment! Philippians 4: See the glass half full! Philippians 4:8-9 & Romans 15:13 4. Serve others. Phone calls & cards count! Hebrews 10:24 5. Hunger and thirst after God s Word & healthy foods. Psalm 42:1 & Daniel 1: Strengthen physically & spiritually. Proverbs 31:17 & Hebrews 12:11 Be inspired. Love. Give. Share what is good. These younger folks just eat so fast that they don t have a chance to really enjoy their food or the company with whom they share it. Slow down and savor the flavor of every bite; then I don t have to feel so rushed to finish mine! PEACE IN LIFE & DEATH Because a Christian believes John 3:16 that Jesus is God s Son and He died for our sins so we can have a relationship with our sinless creator, God, and Jesus defeated death by being resurrected (Easter), the Christian knows that they will be resurrected at death and be in the presence of the Lord as well as in the presence of other believing loved ones who have gone before them. To find this peace or know more, please call KSC at (316) in the sunset years... January is Sanctity of Life month. Life is very precious, and every day is a gift from God. He gives it, and we celebrate it! Many people in their sunset years take many medications, suffer from various health issues, make frequent visits to the doctor or hospital, can barely walk from their bed to the bathroom or are incontinent altogether. Some are miserable and everyone knows it. Others seem to have a smile on their face and a hug or an encouraging word for every person who comes by. Our desire as loved ones is to value and honor their life, and cherish each moment we can. "Wisdom is found with the elderly, and understanding comes with long life," says Job 12:12. There is such power in listening to their stories and to their needs. One need to be addressed with loved ones while their health and cognitive abilities are good, is to have end-of-life conversations and documentation. Those in their sunset years face choices on how they want to be treated when a health crisis occurs. While keeping the value of life at the forefront, they can say, "These are the things I want to have done: I do (or do not) want to have a ventilator, or to be shocked, or to have a feeding tube." A competent person can request not to have certain things done to them medical staff will follow the directives a senior has made, as well as what is ethical in the situation. In the final stage of life, the principles of palliative care instead of treating every single problem is to keep our loved one free of pain and comfortable, while honoring them with dignity. It is a special privilege to care for our loved one during this time, whether rubbing lotion on their arms, applying moisturizer to their lips, or playing music with meaning for them. It s a time for the family to come together and reverently share special memories and tell their loved one how much they mean to them. For the Christian, there is a sacredness to dying: to know that their loved one is about to enter into the presence of Jesus brings great assurance and peace to the family of faith. Thank you, Lord, for the comfort we find in Your presence today. We know You wept over death, as we do, too. We know that none of us will escape this journey through death. Teach us how to embrace it with faith and courage and anticipation of greater things to come. Give (name) peace to know her/ his work on earth is done and it s time to meet You face to face. Give her/him assurance that she/he will see her loved ones who know Jesus again. For the Christian, this is not good-bye, but until we meet again. Fill our hearts with comfort, peace, strength and sweet memories, until we meet again. Amen.

Challenge: KSC encourages you to slow down for a spell and let your loved one share their stories oover a cup of hot tea since it s National Hot Tea month! January s Touch Someone Challenge Invite your loved one or senior friend to enjoy a cup of hot tea with you since it s National Hot Tea month! Reminisce, read a short story, or make scones or tea cookies together! Benefit: the sweet memories of this time together! He worked as a (what denomination) minister and a rights activist and began making a significant impact on race relations in the mid-1950s. He led a very success nonviolent. MLK played a significant role in ending legal of African-Americans in the South and across the nation, in the creation of the Rights Act of 1964, and also in the creation of the Rights Act of MLK is famous for his 1963, speech.
