Brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus, welcome to worship at Trinity Lutheran Church. May we rejoice in all our human diversity as we celebrate our oneness as God s children. If you are a visitor, please sign the guest register at the rear of the sanctuary and please join us for worship again. We have a transport chair available to members and guests when needed. Please ask an usher for assistance. Mary s role is not limited to giving birth to Jesus and mothering him in his childhood. In John s gospel, she is among the women standing near the cross; in Acts, she is among the disciples awaiting the gift of the Spirit. Through all that happened she continued to see how God was at work through her son, keeping the ancient promises to her ancestors, brushing aside the rich and powerful, and focusing on those as poor and powerless as Mary herself. Mary s obedience to God s call to bear Christ into the world, and her faith in God s love, mercy and grace is an example for us today. Mary, Mother of Our Lord August 14, 2016 Holy Communion Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church Pam Illick, Pastor GREETINGS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS PRELUDE & QUIET MEDITATION GATHERING The assembly stands and faces the font (if you are able). CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, abounding in steadfast love toward us, healing the sick and raising the dead, showering us with every good gift. P Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. (Time for personal reflection and confession.) P Just and gracious God, C we come to you for healing and life. Our sins hurt others and diminish us; we confess them to you. Our lives bear the scars of sin; we bring these also to you. Show us your mercy, O God. Bind up our wounds, forgive us our sins, and free us to love, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.
P In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. GATHERING SONG For All the Faithful Women (ELW stanzas 1. 6, last)) GREETING P The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C And also with you. CANTICLE OF PRAISE PRAYER OF THE DAY P Let us pray. Almighty God, in choosing the virgin Mary to be the mother of your Son, you made known your gracious regard for the poor, the lowly, and the despised. Grant us grace to receive your word in humility, and so to be made one with your Son, Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. The assembly is seated. WORD FIRST READING: Isaiah 7:10-14 L A reading from Isaiah. 10 The LORD spoke to Ahaz, saying, 11 Ask a sign of the LORD your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven. 12 But Ahaz said, I will not ask, and I will not put the LORD to the test. 13 Then Isaiah said: Hear then, O house of David! Is it not enough to try the patience of humans? Will you try the patience of my God also? 14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel. L Word of God, word of life. C Thanks be to God. PSALM: Psalm 40: Great are the wonders you have done, O LORD my God! In your plans for us, none can be compared with you! Oh, that I could make them known and tell them! But they are more than I can count. 6 Sacrifice and offering you not desire; you have opened my ears: burnt-offering and sinoffering you have not required. 7 And so I said, Here I am; I come. In the scroll of the book it is written of me: 8 I love to do your will, O my God; your law is deep within me. 9 I proclaimed righteousness in the great assembly; I have not restrained my lips, O LORD, you know. 0 I have not hidden your righteousness in my heart; I have spoken of your faithfulness and your deliverance; I have not concealed your steadfast love and truth from the great assembly.
SECOND READING: Romans 16:25-27 L A reading from Romans. 25 Now to God who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages 26 but is now disclosed, and through the prophetic writings is made known to all the Gentiles, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith 27 to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever! Amen. L Word of God, word of life. C Thanks be to God. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION (Assembly stands.) GOSPEL: Luke 1:26-38 P The holy gospel according to Luke. C Glory to you, O Lord. 26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, 27 to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin's name was Mary. 28 And he came to her and said, "Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you." 29 But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. 30 The angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. 33 He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end." 34 Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I am a virgin?" 35 The angel said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. 36 And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. 37 For nothing will be impossible with God." 38 Then Mary said, "Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word." Then the angel departed from her. P The gospel of the Lord. C Praise to you, O Christ. The assembly is seated. CHILDREN'S MESSAGE SERMON The assembly remains seated for the Hymn of the Day. HYMN OF THE DAY Here I Am, Lord (ELW 574) The assembly stands. CREED P With the whole church, let us confess our faith. C I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION (The assembly stands.) After each petition the congregation will respond: C hear our prayer. PEACE P The peace of Christ be with you always. C And also with you. The people may greet one another with a sign of Christ s peace, and may say, Peace be with you, or similar words. The assembly is seated. OFFERING An offering is gathered for the mission of the church, including the care of those in need. THANK AND TELL OFFERTORY (The assembly stands.) The Welcome Baskets will be brought forward with the offering. OFFERING PRAYER A God of mercy and grace, the eyes of all wait upon you, and you open your hand in blessing. Fill us with good things at your table, that we may come to the help of all in need, through Jesus Christ, our redeemer and Lord. BLESSING OF THE WELCOME BASKETS P You welcome all who come to you, O God, with love and mercy and grace. You send us out to greet our neighbors with these words: C Peace be to you, and peace be to your house, and peace be to all that you have. P We offer these baskets of welcome for out new neighbors for your blessing, C that they may be signs of your love to our neighbors.
P Bless the food, C that out of your abundance our new neighbors will always have what they need. P Bless the plants, C that from your mercy and grace our neighbor has a long life, filled with love and joy, in their new home. P Bless the literature, C that it is informative and helpful for our neighbors, so that they can find the services and opportunities that they need to feel a part of our community. P Bless the towels, C that empowered by your Holy Spirit through Jesus Christ, our neighbor might reach out to help others. P We give you thanks for all that you have given us to share with our neighbors. C Now, Lord, we ask your blessing on these welcome baskets. P God of welcome and abundance, we dedicate these baskets in your name, for our neighbors good and for our world. May those who receive these gifts know your deep love for them and for all people. Bless the items in these Welcome Baskets and ensure that they help meet the needs of our neighbors. Watch over those who will receive these baskets, that they find welcome and acceptance in our community and in your church. And may all this be done to Your glory, in the name of Jesus. DIALOGUE P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Lift up your hearts. C We lift them to the Lord. P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C It is right to give our thanks and praise. PREFACE P It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE P In the night in which he was handed over, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering, therefore, his acts of healing, his body given up, and his victory over death, we await that day when all the peoples of the earth will come to the river to enjoy the tree of life. Send your Spirit upon us and this meal: as grains scattered on the hillside become one bread, so let your Church be gathered from the ends of the earth, that all may be fed with the Bread of life, your Son. Through him all glory and honor is yours, Almighty Father, with the Holy Spirit, in your holy Church, both now and forever.. C Amen
LORD S PRAYER P Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us. C Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. INVITATION TO COMMUNION P Jesus said, Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. The assembly is seated. COMMUNION Communicants will proceed up the center aisle at the direction of the ushers. If you wish to receive the wine from the pouring chalice, please pick up an individual cup from the table at the head of the aisle. After receiving the bread from the pastor, proceed to the pouring chalice or the common cup to receive the wine. Return to your seat by the side aisle. If you prefer to receive a blessing, come forward with your arms crossed over your chest. If you would like to have communion brought to your seat, please indicate your wish to one of the ushers, and the pastor come to you. When giving the bread and cup, the communion ministers say The body of Christ, given for you. The blood of Christ, shed for you. and each person may respond Amen. COMMUNION SONG TABLE BLESSING (The assembly stands.) P The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen and preserve us in eternal life. PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION A Wise and generous God, we thank you that at this holy table you have fed us again with the food of everlasting life. Send us with your blessing to seek the good of our neighbor and call others to your feast; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. SENDING BLESSING AND GODSPEED FOR MADI KREITZ BLESSING P The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord s face shine upon you with grace and mercy. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace.
SENDING SONG Take My Life, That I May Be (ELW 685) DISMISSAL A Following Mary, Mother of our Lord s example, respond to God s call for you to share God s message of love through your words and actions with others. For nothing will be impossible with God. C Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word." POSTLUDE Worship is ended: our service begins.
