The Mass is truly the high point for us, since the Sunday Mass is the heartbeat of our parish. Yes, Our Lord spoke to us for 75 years through His Word and nourished us with His own precious risen Body and Blood in the Eucharist. Those who have filled our pews in years past now continue to celebrate at the Heavenly Banquet with us at each Mass. 75th Anniversary Committee: We are most grateful to Don and Janet Ceretti for chairing our 75th Anniversary Committee. Their team has worked hard and have had fun through the planning and events. To them we are most grateful! With Don and Janet and myself, the committee included Chris Aldinger, Bill and Mary Beck, Bobbi Jo Dorr, Bob Larsen, Eric and Missy Miller, Ellen Moist, Eren Muniz, Marilyn O Brien, Carson and Connie Ode, Darlene Oliver, Joan Stotts, Nancy Stefani, and Carol Weyer. Rev. Msgr. Frank E. Bognanno Advent s intention is to awaken the most profound and basic emotional memory within us, namely, the memory of the God who became a child. This is a healing memory; it brings hope. The purpose of the Church s year is to continually rehearse her great history of memories, to awaken the heart s memory so that it can discern the star of hope. Pope Benedict XVI

2 Good Steward Award Presented October 2014 Kay Minnick Kay Minnick has been a member of Christ the King Catholic Church for 43 years. As a cradle Catholic, Kay grew up in southern Iowa near Mount Ayr. Her mother was a school teacher and her father an auctioneer and real estate salesman. Kay and her husband, Richard, were married at the Catholic Church in Mount Ayr, also his hometown, a bond that lasted 33 years. Kay has been widowed now for 22 years. To this union came two children, Cindy who works at S.E. Polk School, and Michael who is a Mechanical Inspector for the City of Des Moines. Four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren are an important part of Kay s life today. Currently, Kay is an Eucharistic Minister, an Adoration member, librarian volunteer, a member of Altar and Rosary Society where she takes care of the cheer and sympathy committee. In the past, Kay has helped with religious education, the school reading program, and a Christ Renews His Parish participant and team member. Kay enjoys spending time with family and friends as well as watching all types of sports. She proudly admits to being a Notre Dame fan!! Christ the King parish has given Kay opportunities to grow in her Catholic faith and her relationship with God. The parish has become more diverisifed with other cultures and traditions which has strengthened her faith. The continued guidance from Monsignor Frank, the Deacons, as well as the entire staff and our parishioners is what makes Christ the King the very best. November Prayer Almighty God, You give abundance to us and food out of the richness of the soil. We give thanks to you for the fruits of the field which we have gathered. Grant that all those whose desires you have filled with these good things may be happy in your protection. May we praise your mercies forever and make use of the good things that do not last in such a way that we may not lose those goods that are everlasting. Amen After 40 plus years, Kay has sold her home in Des Moines and will be moving to Pleasant Hill to be near her children. She does not like to say good-bye to all of her wonderful Christ the King friends, but would rather say, God Bless, and I ll be seeing you around. What is a Good Steward? A Good Steward is an individual who recognizes that all gifts of time, talent, and treasure are God-given and freely and generously returns these gifts sharing them with others over their lifetime. November Prayer Intentions In gratitude for all of God s gifts; For those who have accepted God s invitation to the religious life; For all creation, for sights and sounds and all our senses. For a greater sense of gratitude and charity over the holiday season. Let s All Celebrate Our Diamond Anniversary Our 75th Anniversary will culminate with these special events: November 11 Veterans Day Mass to honor parishioners who have served in the armed forces. November 13 Mass of Remembrance for all deceased parishioners, religious and clergy. November 23 Feast of Christ the King with 11:00 Mass celebrated by Bishop Pates followed by a reception in the Parish Hall. 3 75th Anniversary Celebrations: Ice Cream Social and Living Rosary ICE CREAM SOCIAL: September 14 Among the many celebrations in commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of Christ the King, two additional special events have occurred. The Parish Ice Cream Social on Sunday, September 14th following the 11:00 a.m. mass was a fun event, thanks to our great parish community. The Committee is grateful for all who attended as well as those who assisted in working to make this a memorable event for our parish. Special invitees included our Charter Members, current and past clergy and religious and CKS faculty. Former priests in attendance included Fathers Leonard Kenkel and Al Sherbo. Charter Members who helped us celebrate were Rose Mary Egan, Art Nizzi, Dominic Armentaro, Jim Scavo, and Dora Fontanini. Former CKS principal, Bruce Akemann and retired teachers Sister Bernice Gall, Maureen Mahoney Kauzlarich and JoAnn Huss were present and enjoyed socializing with many of the current school staff in attendance. Our special dignitaries received a commemorative Christ the King keepsake and richly deserve our deep gratitude for shaping our parish and school into the outstanding facility that it is today. THE LIVING ROSARY: October 12 Christ the King Parish was honored with our first Living Rosary! Thanks most of all to Letty Boltron who let the Holy Spirit flow gently into her heart and hands to create for us the most beautiful rosary anyone could ever ask for. Msgr. Bognanno and Deacon Larry led us in the most adoring procession and bonding of many ministries of this wonderful Parish of which we are all so much a part. Thanks go out to the participants, 75th Anniversary Committee, Knights of Columbus, Altar & Rosary, Hispanic Ministry, Youth Ministry, Christ the King School and the Cenacle of Mary. Everyone did a fantastic job. Following the festivities in the Grotto we were joined by the rest of the Parish and had a wonderful Multi-Cultural potluck meal in the Parish Hall. Parishioners mentioned how much they enjoyed this beautiful celebration in honor of our Blessed Mother and have asked that we do this every October and have different ministries of the Parish perform the Decades. Sounds like a really great idea to me! Thank you again to our 75th Anniversary Committee for the wonderful celebrations this year and of course to Letty Boltron. Thanks to Letty Boltron and daughter Beth for all their efforts! Former priests, teachers present and past, and Charter Members joined our parishioners to celebrate this special occasion! 3

5 Christ the King Read With Me Program Evidence based research shows that many youth who drop out of school are ones who have trouble reading. Educators stress the importance of being able to read by the time they finish third grade. In fact, some school districts are now holding students back because of it. The reading program here at Christ the King School was started about ten years ago and consisted of volunteers who helped out every Thursday during the lunch hour. In the beginning, the program focused on second graders. Two years ago, it was decided to move forward by adding third graders. Readers who are assigned to a second grader stay with that student through third grade and then are reassigned to a second grader the following year. Following a student for two years helps increase the student s ability to read. The program does not prescribe how the student and the reader spend their reading time. Every student is different. Some students want to do all of the reading while some want the reader to do some of the reading. The goal is to work with the student to improve the student s reading level and have fun doing it. Reading should be fun and making JJan Short reads with Alexis. reading fun is a big part of the mission of Christ the King School Reading Program. One time I asked our School Principal, Becky Johnson, how many students in second and third grade could benefit from our program and she said, Every one of them. There is no substitute for spending time reading one-on-one with a student. Christ the King parish is a wonderful church mainly because of the people who belong to it. I wonder how many of them would like to spend their lunch hour reading with a second or third grader? The following is a brief outline of what is expected of a reader: 1. Agree to spending Thursdays at Christ the King School from 11:30 to 12: You have a choice of bringing your lunch, buying your lunch, or not having lunch. 3. Agreeing to a background check and completing a tutorial program made available by the Diocese of Des Moines. 4. If for some reason you are not available to read on a particular Thursday, notify the Reading Coordinator. Think about becoming a reading volunteer. You have an opportunity to make a difference that will last a lifetime and make a new friend. For more information, contact Christ the King School at (515) Thank you! 6 Homebound Ministry I would like to say a few words about our Great Eucharistic Ministry for the homebound. I never thought about it or appreciated much until I had to use it. This past winter, from the middle of December to almost May of this year, my wife and I had some health problems that prevented us from coming to Mass, plus all the bad weather we had during this period. So, I called some good friends of ours, Earl and Jean Harper. I told them what was going on with my wife and I and they offered to bring Communion to us every Thursday morning. We were good friends before, but after that we became even closer friends. As much as we love coming to Mass every week, we also looked forward in seeing our good friends every week. I m sure that that s the way it is for many of you who are homebound. Homebound ministry helps you keep connected with parish members by them bringing Communion to you and you get a chance to pray and visit with them for a few minutes. I don t know if Christ the King needs any more Homebound Eucharistic Ministers, but I urge anyone who has some extra time and is physically fit to think about this Great Ministry. It takes a special kind of person to do this job and thank God we are blessed with many special people as these! God Bless, Daniel Maldonado Tanzania Project by Earl Harper This Thanksgiving Season, we have an opportunity to reflect on our many blessings and to heed the words and actions of our Holy Father, Pope Francis, in seeing the need in the world and doing something to help others. The Tanzania Committee is hosting an event to help provide meals to many of our Tanzanian friends who are in need of sufficient nutrition. We have been working with Outreach, Inc., based out of the south side of Des Moines. They will bring in all the supplies we need to package meals that will be sent to Tanzania. This is similar to the much publicized Meals from the Heartland event. We are inviting any parishioner who wants to help out to join us on Saturday, November 22 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Christ the King school gym. Bring some friends to provide labor and donations for a table of people who can package up to 2,000 meals in an hour. The cost to us is 30 cents per meal to pay for the supplies and shipping. Our goal is 7,500 meals X 2 (to honor our past 75 years and looking forward to the next 75 years)! Sign up sheets to be a part of this fantastic event will be available after masses on November 8-9 and Talk with others in your circle of friends or organizations and fill meals for Tanzania!! Christ the King Foundation by Chris Aldinger, Business Manager New Board Members Announced Exciting Year Ahead for the Foundation The Christ the King Foundation, founded in 2002 by Monsignor Frank Bognanno, announces the addition of Joe Bohlke, Ruthann Cherny, Bill Rutledge, Allan Stokes, and Tom Stein to the Foundation Board. Along with its investment arm, the Foundation raises money annually through its Charity Golf Outing held every July, the Foundation Legacy Society, individual donors and events such as its wills seminars and annuity lunch- 6 eons. Soon to be added to the fundraising lineup is an annual Pastor s Dinner. Annually the Foundation gives back with its grant program and through the proceeds of the golf tournament. For grant information you can visit click on Groups and go to the Foundation tab. The Board is currently in the process of positioning members in various roles. These changes will be announced as soon as they are completed. For more information about the Christ the King Foundation, you can reach Marilyn O Brien or Chris Aldinger at (515) As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them. 7 Christ the King School Our School Is Cool! Christ the King School had the opportunity again this year to have our school featured on 5 morning broadcasts on Iowa Catholic Radio in October. The purpose of these broadcasts is to highlight schools in the Diocese and inform the public about the great things that occur in our Catholic Schools as well as emphasize the benefits of a Catholic education. We have great fun participating in this, and our students get excited about the competition to see which class receives the most My School is Cool votes. For the second year in a row, our Third Graders received this honor! Last year the third grade received a pizza party; this year they will receive a Subway lunch for their entire class. 9 The True Meaning of Christmas... Teach the Children Just a week before Christmas, I had a visitor. This is how it happened. I just finished the household chores for the night and was preparing to go to bed, when I heard a noise in the front of the house. I opened the door to the front room and to my surprise, Santa himself stepped out next to the fireplace! What are you doing? I started to ask. The words choked up in my throat and I saw he had tears in his eyes. His usual jolly manner was gone. Gone was the eager, boisterous soul we all know. He then answered me with a simple statement... TEACH THE CHILDREN! I was puzzled. What did he mean? He anticipated my question and with one quick movement brought forth a miniature toy bag from behind the tree. As I stood bewildered, Santa said, TEACH THE CHILDREN! Teach them the old meaning of Christmas. The meaning that now-a-days Christmas has forgotten. Santa then reached in his bag and pulled out a FIR TREE and placed it before the mantle. Teach the children that the pure green color of the stately fir tree remains green all year round, depicting the everlasting hope of mankind, all the needles point heavenward, making it a symbol of man s thoughts turning toward heaven. He reached into his bag and pulled out a brilliant STAR. Teach the children that the star was the heavenly sign of promises long ago. God promised a Savior for the world, and the star was the sign of fulfillment of his promise. He then reached into his bag and pulled out a CANDLE. Teach the children that the candle symbolizes that Christ is the light of the world, and when we see this great light we are reminded of He who displaces the darkness. Once again, he reached into his bag and removed a WREATH and placed it on the tree. Teach the children that the wreath symbolizes the real nature of love. Real love never ceases. Love is one continuous round of affection. He then pulled from his bag an OR- NAMENT of himself. Teach the children that God so loved the world that he gave his begotten Son. Thanks be to God for his unspeakable gift. He then brought out a HOLLY LEAF. Teach the children that the holly plant represents immortality. It represents the crown of thorns worn by our Savior. The red holly berries represent the blood shed by Him. Next he pulled from his bag a GIFT and said, Teach the children that God so loved the world that he gave his begotten Son. Thanks be to God for this unspeakable gift. Santa then reached in his bag and pulled out a CANDY CANE and hung it on the tree. Teach the children that the candy cane represents the shepherds crook. The crook on the staff helps to bring back strayed sheep to the flock. The candy cane is the symbol that we are our brother s keeper. He reached in again and pulled out an ANGEL. Teach the children that it was the angels that heralded in the glorious news of the Savior s birth. The angels sang Glory to God in the highest, on earth peace and good will toward men. Suddenly I heard a soft twinkling sound and from his bag he pulled out a BELL. Teach the children that as the lost sheep are found by the sound of the bell, it should ring mankind to the fold. The bell symbolizes guidance and return. Santa looked back and was pleased. He looked back at me and I saw that the twinkle was back in his eyes. Remember, teach the children the true meaning of Christmas and do not put me in the center, for I am but a humble servant of the One that is, and I bow down to worship him, our LORD, our GOD. Twenty parishioners enjoyed a day of shopping, lunch, and a tour of the U.S. Grant home which was a beautiful brick home given to him by townspeople after the Civil War. We evangelized at one of our rest stops where Deb Mathis met a woman formerly from Iowa. She was on her way to Iowa City to be with her brother who was having surgery that morning. She asked about our group and if we would pray for him so before we left we all said a Hail Mary for her and her brother. It was a long day, but all in all, everyone had a good time and we praise the Lord for giving us a good trip. We are looking forward to another trip next Fall. Over 60 s meet the second Wednesday of each month in the Parish Hall at 1:00 PM. You do not have to be over 60 to join the fun and socializing with other Christ the King Parishioners. 12 Good Steward Award Presented November 2014 Francis & Eileen Miller Francis and Eileen Miller have been members of Christ the King parish for 65 years. They have been happily married for 53 of those years and have eight grown children and 24 grandchildren. Francis worked in carpet installation for 45 years and now works for Louie s Floor Covering taking measurements. Additionally, Francis donates his time to the security team at Christ the King church where the crew is responsible for ensuring doors are locked after hours. Eileen has worked as the Food Service Director for Christ the King School for the last 26 years, a career she began by filling in when there was a need. Eileen has enjoyed spending time working at the school. She has had the privilege to watch the enrollment grow tremendously and both she and Francis have likewise enjoyed watching the growth at Christ the King church. They have had countless proud moments at Christ the King. Eileen says their oldest son was one of the first to attend first grade at Christ the King School. Each of their children were baptized, had their first communion and confirmation at Christ the King and some of their children have married here too. During their time as members, they have relished in the growth and appreciate how the parish thrives. Between them both, Francis and Eileen have taken part in the following committees during their time: School Board, Home and School, Capital Campaign, assisted with marriage preparation for years along with Sunday School, Youth Group, Monica s Meals, and have participated and supported the countless activities and events hosted at Christ the King. During their time at the parish, Francis and Eileen have seen many changes and many priests. They appreciate all that Monsignor Bognanno does for the church and for promoting its growth. They say, It s Christ the King Church that feels like home to us. Francis and Eileen, thank you so much for all you do for our parish, the school, and community and thank you for your example of serving with a joyous heart. Join the Team! by Mary Tice We are all so fortunate to be members of this amazing parish. A place that is filled with loving hearts reaching out to help those in need. A parish that provides meals for a mom that just had a baby, a parish that digs deep into their pockets and closets to help the poor and the hungry. We educate our youth and make the adults of the parish life-long learners of the Catholic faith. Christ the King is a parish, it is a school, it is an RE program, it is a youth group. We are a campus! It doesn t matter where you fit in the puzzle. The point is that you are a piece in our puzzle and without you, our parish wouldn t be what it is today. I know you are just as proud to be a member of this parish as I am. And I know you are bursting with joy to share your faith and love for Jesus with others. And now, as parishioners of Christ the King, we can proudly sport our new grey and blue team spirit shirts. around; a few are already out and about. We hope with the color selection and many style options available you will take pride in wearing your CTK spirit shirt! We also hope that the design of these t-shirts will help open the door to conversation and make it easier for you to share in the joy of Jesus and the gift He is to all mankind. We are in the new evangelization. Christ asked all of us to be disciples, to be fishers of men. Order a t-shirt and by wearing it ask others to Join the Team! The RE program has begun a fund raiser to help you share your Christ the King spirit with the hot new release of Christ the King apparel from toddler sizes to 3XL. This fund raiser is being done to help offset the cost of our summer Totus Tuus program. We hope to keep registration costs low to enable all students who wish to attend to do so. Check out the new apparel at the parish website: You will find order forms on the right hand side. Orders will be due Nov 3 rd as well as a later order date of Dec 2 nd. If you would like to see a sample, stop by the parish office or just look 12

14 Monsignor Beeson Answers Questions About Our Catholic Faith (Monsignor Beeson is our wise and respected authority on the Catholic Church. He has graciously agreed to answer questions from our parishioners about our faith. We encourage you to submit any questions you may have on our faith in writing to the parish office or through to our editor at Q: Why can t Catholics write their own wedding vows? Actually, there is a choice in which version of the wedding vows you can use. As you prepare your wedding, this will be pointed out to you. The Church considers marriage a sacrament and every part of the vows is important. The Church wants to insure that all of the major parts of what constitutes marriage are included in the vows. As Pope St. John Paul II says the gift of marriage is the gift of the spouses to one another. The Church uses set formulas in order to insure that this is what is said. It is the donation and the gift. Vocations at Christ the King Christ the King is so blessed to have a vibrant interest in Vocations. Your prayers are always so important to encourage and stimulate the growth of this ministry. The following Vocations activities are vital in keeping our Vocations ministry alive: The Traveling Vocations program now features an updated booklet to accompany the Chalice. We are currently working on a special vocations bag for our Hispanic parishioners to assist them in praying in their own language. Please call Cindy Miller at to sign up to receive the Vocations Chalice for a week in your home. Please continue praying a rosary each month for Vocations. We appreciate the work of Monsignor Frank in actively encouraging young people to consider a vocation. CTK hosted an Andrew Dinner on Monday evening, October 27 for Catholic men in high school, college, or those out of the educational system. Bishop Richard Pates and the Diocesan Vocations office were present for this casual evening of prayer, dinner, and priests who shared their vocations stories. The evening was a great success. The Vocations Committee and Office of Vocations joined Bishop Pates for an hour of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament one hour prior to the event. We rejoice with the Gordon and Barb Graham family of our parish in the news that their daughter, Rachael, joined the Sisters of Saint Francis of the Martyr Saint George this fall. Rachael was drawn to the Sisters simplicity, joy, and mission to make the merciful love of Christ visible. Rachael is presently at the Mater Redemptorist House of Formation in La Crosse, WI as she continues her discernment process. We encourage prayer from our CTK community for Rachael as well as our Seminarians as they explore and study the religious life. Here is an update of our Christ the King Seminarians: ZACH DALY continues to study in Theology II at North American College in Rome. He worked this summer helping new seminarians at the North American College get moved and 14 Q: How do I determine which private devotions are the best for me to use? This is an excellent question. First, I think that it is important to use the Devotions that you grew up with if they still speak to you. Sometimes we grow out of a particular devotion. Next, I would say, Use the devotions that we are using in our parish. In Christ the King Parish, that would include the Rosary, Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, Adoration and attendance at daily Mass. In Lent, we pray the Stations of the Cross each week. The next place I would look is the duties of my state of life. What does God expect of me day to day? If I am the father of a family I must raise my children in the faith. If I am the main source of income for the family, I need to be diligent at work, etc. When these are all in order, I may wish to choose another devotion but I want to make sure that all of my duties are taken care of first. The devotion should be one that helps me to carry out the duties of my state in life. settled in. From there he progressed to Saint Andrea Parish at Mantova in Northern Italy acting as a gatekeeper for the rectory, visiting the sick, working on his Italian, and helping the pastor. RYAN ANDREW is in Theology II at Saint Paul Seminary in Minnesota. He spent his summer in Stuart, Iowa, doing a parish internship at All Saints Parish and Saint John Parish in Adair. Please offer prayer for Ryan as he received the Ministry of Acolyte at Saint Paul Seminary on October 21. The Ministry of Acolyte is one of the important steps to Priesthood ordination and in that rite will assist at the celebration of the Eucharist, purifying the sacred vessels and assisting with the distribution of Holy Communion. BRIAN TABER is currently a scholastic in theology studies for the next three years at Boston College. As a Jesuit scholastic, Brian will earn a masters, become a deacon, and be ordained at the end of the three years. This is the final phase of his 12-year formation to the priesthood. We ask you to continue praying for all those who are currently walking in the footsteps of Our Lord. Please remember to send them a thoughtful message of support over the Holidays. Their addresses can be accessed on Page 4 of this publication.
