1 Non Profit Organization U.S. POSTAGE PAID Permit NO. 1 Litchfield, MN Firs News Firs News A monthly publication for the members and friends of First Evangelical Lutheran Church DECEMber 2017 First evangelical Lutheran church 703 South Sibley Avenue Litchfield, MN Time with Tom Address Service Requested Advent is a time of lament as we prepare for the coming of our Lord. But lament and anticipation don t feel the same. We lament or are sad because of the seemingly never ending waiting. It is difficult to feel lament in a time when the secular world is already celebrating the day of Christ s birth. Advertising and the promotion of products take front stage everywhere we look. TV, radio, internet, and billboards are claiming the birth of the Lord and the church says we should lament? Can the church catch up to the rest of the world just this one time? Will the Christians get the timing right this year or will we be putting up our tree when everyone else is tired of Christmas and puts theirs away. How do we make sense of this? How do we live in a world that wants us to shut down Jesus most of the year except when it is time to sell Christians trees and gifts Christians say no, not yet? Is it time for the church to step up and get into the HOLIDAY SPIRIT at Halloween like the rest of the world? Or, do we hold on to the church calendar and live through Advent as we wait for the CHRISTMAS SEASON? As Lutherans, we need to hold onto the Advent season as the reminder we are waiting for Christ to come. In this fickle world we still need to be Christian. We need to be Christians first and consumers second. As we wait this year for the coming Christ child, let us remember the long wait will be worth it. After we have lived in lament and the long wait is over, we will hear the story of God s love, we will sing the songs of praise. We will know again that God has shown his grace to undeserving people, and we will celebrate because Emmanuel God with us means something to us. The gift to us is from the God who gives us life through a baby boy. Lament now, celebrate on Christmas morning. Amen.
