Glory News Principles of Humility Joshua Campbell 1st Quarter, 2016 According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, humility is defined as the state of not thinking you are better than other people: The quality or state of being humble. By this definition, the following principles can be implied: 1. Humility involves putting others before yourself. 2. Humility is a sacrifice: When one demonstrates humility, they essentially sacrifice (or give up) their self-interests, or anything that has a bearing on oneself. As human beings, we have a tendency to view the world from a very narrow perspective. More often than not, we develop a Me centered attitude and viewpoint towards life. This viewpoint becomes a sacrifice when one makes the conscious effort to put it aside for the wellbeing of someone other than themselves. Pat s Kitchen, Pg 2 Crucifixicion Quiz Page 3, 5 Wisdom, Page 3, 8 The Land, The Promise, Page 4 Music News, Page 5 Worship Expectation, Pg 6 Fit Tips, Page 7 In 1 Peter 3:3(NIV), it is stated that your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes." A sacrifice in this case, would be the act of giving up the opportunity to show off looks. While looking good is certainly desirable (to ourselves and those around us), it can contribute to us bearing an arrogant mindset, because we eventually believe that no one can look as good as we do. Verse 4 adds to this by stating that your beauty should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God s sight. This recognition of inner beauty can only come from sacrificing the desire to show off. 3. Humility involves wisdom. When one is wise, they have knowledge and know how to use it. If we are to be humble, we must recognize the fact that not everyone knows, understands, or see as we do. It is also crucial to recognize that there are things we ourselves do not know, and that someone else might have that knowledge. In other words, knowledge cannot be used as a means of leverage, because it can be easily used against you. 4. Humility involves lowliness, which means that we lower ourselves for the sake of others. While Jesus is God in the flesh, He placed great emphasis on serving the people around Him. He interacted with them; He was a friend to them. He was a human being to them. Ultimately, Jesus is God. If God is capable of lowering Himself to walk among men, how are we in any position to place ourselves above others? By placing ourselves on a pedestal, are we not saying that we are greater than God? Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. Romans 12:16 (NIV)

Answers on Page 5 The Wisdom of Having Wise Friends Gwen Smith (submitted by Minister Helene McKithen) Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed. Proverbs 15:22 God always needs to be our go-to guy when it comes to counsel. Our first call. But the Bible also gives us the directive to connect with other Christ followers for guidance: seek godly counsel. The LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. He holds success in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless (Prov. 2:6 7). When I make an effort to seek godly counsel, I benefit from the power of the Lord that is at work in the lives of those around me. I benefit from their mistakes and from their successes. And it frees me from the pressure of having to figure everything out on my own. It frees me to move forward beyond my own limited experiences, faith, and knowledge. Continued on Page 8
The Land, the Promise Minister Sherry Holt-Campbell Glory, Page 4 "The whole land of Canaan, where you now reside as a foreigner, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you; and I will be their God." (Genesis 17:8) The book of Genesis is recorded as being the First, the Beginning. So in the beginning God gave the land of Canaan to Abraham and his seed, his decendents. Yet today the Jewish nation is being denied their rightful place in the land. There has been for many years an all out assault on removing this seed from the land. Jacob s name was changed to Israel and through his son Joseph, the children of Israel descended into Egypt. God told Abraham that You must obey my covenant and your descendants who will come after you (Gen 17:9). There are consequences to not obeying the word of the Lord. When God makes an agreement with man, it is not to be broken, and if it is, the fruit that comes from disobedience is scheduled for a future date and time, if not immediately. We can take a page from the children of Israel and how they wandered for 40 years in the wilderness because they did not obey. I remember as a child my mother often quoted Obedience is better than sacrifice. Even with the Jewish connection to the Land so clearly laid out, there is a massive effort to keep the Jewish nation out of the land. The land lost its name from 1920 to 1948 and was called Palestine. This was just another attempt to disconnect the identity of the rightful people from the land. Colossians 2:8-10 (Message) warns us to be careful of human regulations. Watch out for people who try to dazzle you with big words and intellectual double-talk. They want to drag you off into endless arguments that never amount to anything. They spread their ideas through the empty traditions of human beings and the empty superstitions of spirit beings. But that s not the way of Christ. Everything of God gets expressed in Him, so you can see and hear Him clearly. You don t need a telescope, a microscope, or a horoscope to realize the fullness of Christ, and the emptiness of the universe without Him. When you come to Him, that fullness comes together for you, too. His power extends over everything. The freedoms of God s promises are to those who are rooted and grounded in Christ our Lord. If we are deceived by human philosophy, we risk losing our identity and thus missing our rightful place. To bring this home, don t let anyone convince you that your God is not real. Don t be tricked into thinking that your GOD does not exist and religion is just a well organized group with hidden agendas. Deuteronomy 11:1 reminds us, So love GOD, your God; guard well his rules and regulations, obey His commandments for the rest of time (Message Bible). Verses says, The land you are entering to take up ownership isn t like Egypt, the land you left, where you had to plant your own seed and water it yourselves as in a vegetable garden. But the land you are about to cross the river and take for your own is a land of mountains and valleys; it drinks water that rains from the sky. It s a land that GOD, your God, personally tends He s the gardener He alone keeps His eye on it all year long. Better is coming if we remember the promises of God, we will possess the land in so many ways.

Worship Expectations Pastor Marcella Trammer Glory, Page 6 As your worship leader, I realize that we all get spiritually connected in different ways. We all have different preferences and different expectations. What we like or expect in worship is sometimes due to our previous worship experiences. Some people have a particular worship background, while others may have none. Perhaps some conjure up notions of what worship should be, based on what they've been told or maybe have viewed on television or movies. Some have cultural expectations and believe certain cultures should worship in a set pattern. Most of us do draw spiritual connections from musical worship. And problems can arise when we don't agree on what church music should sound like. Should we continue to sing classic hymns? Do we perform what is commonly heard on Christian radio? How long do we sing the song? How loud should it be or not be? How fast, how slow? No matter what the answers to these questions are, or whether I have the correct answers, there are certain things most worship leaders want you to know...whether you're a Christian or not. 1. What the song "says" is the most important factor! Although the speed of the music and perhaps certain chords can hinder the message, for the most part, it's lyrics lyrics lyrics! We carefully choose songs for its message. The words are what minister or speak to our hearts and...help us convey to God what is in our hearts. 2. If we repeat a certain chorus line, there is a reason. There is something in those particular words at that particular time that need to be emphasized, based on the leading of the Holy Spirit, in order to instill a fervent communication between us and God. It's not a performance of harmonies, or a groovy set of chords, but a repetitive purpose. Sometimes it takes a while for us "to get it". It's the same as taking 60 seconds to meditate on the word. So don't just mindlessly sing along, while your thoughts are outside the door somewhere. Consider what you're singing. You miss the point if you think we are repeating a line just for the sake of repeating it. 3. This leads into my next point. We try to give moments where every individual has a time during the corporate worship to personally minister your personal feelings to God. Not all of what needs to be said will come from the platform. Or, it also assists the worshipper when they don't know what to say. I have many songs on my ipod where a professional artist has captured just what I needed, but I couldn't (at least temporarily) put into words. When our lives catch up to the lyrics, our hearts will leap as a testament to the power of those very words. 4. We don't control the volume. Most times we can't tell how loud the music is from the platform. Everyone has an opinion about volume, style, length, and other aspects. So we have to consider everybody. 5. Not only are worship leaders using their God-given gifts to glorify God, but to also serve the people. The Lord requires excellence, skill, commitment, and holiness; all of which is a great sacrifice, as are many service areas in the church. But leading worship requires standing in front of people, remembering words (even with a cheat sheet), remembering notes, remembering song formats, covering and overcoming mistakes, flowing from song to song, knowing when to push, and when to pull back, knowing what to say, and how much to say, knowing when to stop, even though our spirits want to stay in that worship place...and on and on. It's hard sometimes to leave or "come down". We know that what we do is NOT about us, and so we come with a servant s heart. We hope to lift you up by helping you spiritually connect to God.because ultimately, it s all about Him! 6. Remember, God is in the moment. We may not sing your favorite song this Sunday, or maybe a particular song is sung too much, or it s very old. But open up your heart to receive and participate as we give God the sacrifice of praise continually, which He so deserves.
Fit Tips Brittany Trammer Glory, Page 7 Just a few tips to help you reach your health goals:
Wisdom of Having Wise Friends Gwen Smith (submitted by Min. H. McKithen) Glory, Page 8 Continued from Page 3 Struggling with a tough work situation? Tangled up in a messy marriage knot? Are you being held captive by fear, doubt, and insecurity? Get some godly counsel. Proverbs tells us, Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed (15:22 ESV). My husband is a wise man, and God has placed him as the head of our home, so I like to talk through difficult things with him. He gives me a perspective that s often quite different from mine. When I need to hash out confusion, I sometimes go to the small group of women I call my besties. They are godly. They love me. They like me. They laugh at and with me. They pray for me. They mentor me and provide counsel. We re all in different seasons of life and have different needs for godly wisdom. I am a poppy, you are a rose, she is a daisy we are a wildflower bouquet! If you re single, divorced, or widowed, you might be the head of your home. If so, you could connect with a pastor for godly counsel, or a trusted friend who follows hard after Jesus, or a godly family member or coworker. Another person I encourage you to reach out to is the women s ministry director of your church. Grab coffee or lunch with her. She will love you! There are many ways you can gain wisdom and add greater power to your life. Add to this list as you discover what works for you. Are you a journal girl? Write about the areas in which you need God s wisdom. Write a prayer in your journal that spells them out in black and white. Pursue the treasure! And here s a wonky twist: sometimes God answers our prayers for wisdom by sending us to talk with someone who doesn t even follow Him but has the knowledge we need. When our son Preston broke his jaw and needed reconstructive surgery, Brad and I got counsel from a highly trained oral and maxillofacial surgeon. We prayed for the Lord to lead each decision we made and to guide the hands and choices of the surgical team, but our medical counsel came straight from the medical expert. His faith had nothing to do with it. Though that medical advice may or may not have come from a follower of Christ, Brad and I prayed for the Lord to lead with His wisdom in, on, and through it all. God s Word promises that He will walk you to the understanding you need. Just ask. I know you want His leading as much as I do. So when life gets crazy confusing, remember that you can gain clarity and power when you surround yourself with godly people of wise counsel. Let s Pray Dear Lord, You are the source of all the wisdom I ever need. Thank you for using others in my life to influence my success. Please help me grow in and welcome godly counsel. In Jesus Name, Amen.
