TRACING THE BIBLICAL STORYLINE
Summary Statement The Bible tells the story of God s interaction with his creation throughout history and his commitment to rescue it from the effects of our rebellion by the reconciling work of Christ in order to recreate it all for his glory!
Six Chapters 1. Creation 2. Fall 3. Re-creation Promised 4. Re-creation Initiated 5. Re-creation Expanding 6. Re-creation Consummated
Dates BC BC Abraham, Isaac, Joseph, Jacob, slavery in Egypt Wilderness, Conquest, Judges, Beginning of Monarchy
400 Years of Slavery Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph (Ex 1:8) Israel multiplied - the land was filled with them (Ex 1:7) God hears the cries of his people and remembered his covenant (Ex 2:24)
Moses 3:11 Who am I? I will be with you 3:13 What if they ask me your name? I am who I am 4:1 What if the people don t believe me? I will give you a sign 4:10 I ve never been a good speaker I will help you speak 4:13 Send someone else! you will speak through Aaron
The Divine Name - YHWH I AM WHO I AM
Plagues Blood Frogs Gnats/lice Flies Livestock Boils Hail Locusts Darkness Firstborn
The Mosaic Covenant What is the purpose of the law?
The purpose of the law It excites sin in us What shall we say, then? Is the law sinful? Certainly not! Nevertheless, I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, You shall not covet. But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, produced in me every kind of coveting. (Romans 7:7-8)
The purpose of the law It excites sin in us It teaches us about our captivity to sin Once I was alive apart from the law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died. (Romans 7:9)
The purpose of the law It excites sin in us It teaches us about our captivity to sin It drives us to Christ What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!
The Law Civil Ceremonial Moral
What do the 10 commandments reveal about the nature of God?
Covenant Blessings and Curses Deuteronomy 28, Leviticus 26 if you obey. if you disobey.
Wilderness Wanderings How would you characterize this period of history? For I know that after my death you will surely act corruptly and turn aside from the way that I have commanded you. (Deut 31:29)
The Conquest
The Conquest For if you turn back and cling to the remnant of these nations remaining among you and make marriages with them, so that you associate with them and they with you, know for certain that the LORD your God will no longer drive out these nations before you, but they shall be a snare and a trap for you, a whip on your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from off this good ground that the LORD your God has given you. (Josh 23:12-13)
Judges 1. Israel does what is evil in the eyes of the LORD 2. The LORD delivers them into the hands of an enemy 3. The people cry out 4. God raises up a Judge 5. Lord delivers them 6. Period of rest
Why did Israel want a King? Was it a bad desire? Abraham (Gen 17:6, 16) - Kings will come from you Moses (Deut 17:14-20) - provisions for establishing a king The people grow tired of waiting and demand a king (1 Sam 8)
King David - Changes That United Israel Seized Jerusalem and made it the capital Dealt with the Philistine threat Captured surrounding people groups and subjected them to Israel
The Davidic Covenant - 2 Sam 7 What is promised to David? How are these promises fulfilled?
Davidic Covenant - Promises a great name (v9) a place for the people (v10) rest (v11) a house (v11) a seed, of whom God would be Father (v12-15) a kingdom that will be forever (v16)
David s Response Who am I, O Sovereign LORD, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? And as if this were not enough in your sight, O Sovereign LORD, you have also spoken about the future of the house of your servant. Is this your usual way of dealing with man, O Sovereign LORD? (2 Sam 7:18-19)
What new things have we uncovered about the promised Messiah? The Messiah will come from David s family The Messiah will be God s Son The Messiah will have an everlasting Kingdom
David s Conclusion - 2 Sam 23:5 For he has made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things and secure. For will he not cause to prosper all my help and my desire?
