Review of the Previous Minutes and Matters Arising. The minutes were approved as being correct. Formation Reflection on Fr Michael Cupit s Autumn talks; the numbers attending were good and the feedback was positive. Father imparted some real gems for thought, we are grateful to have such a learned and good communicator. It was suggested and agreed that each parish would take turns in arranging and hosting on-going talks on behalf of the APA. Fr Martin offered to take responsibility for the Spring 2018 talks; 3 sessions, to be held between Christmas and Easter and based on The Eucharist. (Adoramus, Eucharistic Congress) 21 st Century Parish Communication There was a good discussion and sharing of knowledge with regard to Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat; administration and Diocesan policies. It was agreed that there is a need and interest in having an expert come to advise/educate the group; this should be considered by the Local Missionary Area Committee see next agenda item. Review of Local Pastoral Areas Canon John distributed a paper from the Bishop regarding Local Missionary Area Councils replacing Local Pastoral Area Teams. The paper should be distributed with the meeting minutes to parishioners. There was a robust discussion and it was agreed that it should be discussed at Parish Councils/Pastoral Committees and a strategy for moving to become a Local Missionary Area Council at our next meeting. The Council will comprise of a Priest from each Parish (3), a Youth representative (rep), a Caritas rep, a Marriage & Family rep, a lay rep from each parish (ideally from a Parish Council member), a Catechist rep, a Deacon, a Catholic Education rep and possibly a secretary. It was agreed; that the appointment of a parish lay rep should be discussed at individual Parish Council meetings Time served by reps should be strictly adhered to. The paper will be circulated to APA members (by Canon John). Members will digest the contents in preparation for formulating a strategy at the next meeting. It was agreed that we should encourage Parish Catechists from across our three churches to meet together, to aid networking and encourage support. AOB A LIFE IN THE SPIRIT SEMINAR is being planned for 2018 at Holy Angels. An invitation will be extended to the APA. A MARIAN PILGRIMAGE TO FATIMA, is being planned for 2018 by Holy Angels. An invitation will be extended to the APA. Holy Angels have introduced a Sunday evening Mass at 6pm. The time was chosen to not directly clash with other Masses in the APA. Fathers Martin and Humphrey are pleased with the attendance thus far. TOM SCANLON, our lay chairperson has resigned. Canon John thanked Tom for his pro-active, successful and loyal service, he will be missed. Tom responded saying it had been a privilege and how he had enjoyed being part of this effective team. 3 ALTRINCHAM PASTORAL AREA (APA) HELD ON 13 MARCH 2017 PRESENT: Canon John Rafferty Father Tony Myers Father Martin Deacon Deacon John Penny Christine Simpson Georgie Marlow Lisa Kelly Ruth Holland Tom Scanlon Eddie Drozdziak Ann Campion APOLOGIES None full house! Deacon John led us in prayer as we started our meeting. REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS MINUTES and MATTERS ARISING. The minutes were approved as being correct. Formation Father Michael Cupit s talks on What is Lent have been much enjoyed by an audience of people. Those attending have requested that he comes to talk to us again. It was agreed that we should invite him to come in the summer term. It was also suggested that in this Year of Mercy we should try and find a speaker to address us on this subject. A suggestion was made and agreed upon that each parish should take it in turn to host future series of talks, St Hugh s and St John s in the summer term and Holy Angels in the autumn term. A Penitential Service will be held for our three parishes on Monday 10 April at 7.30 pm at St Vincent s Church Review of Local Pastoral Areas Although we are still awaiting further information from the Diocese on this subject, it was agreed at the recent Deanery meeting of priests that parishes should be invited to discuss this matter. Father John, Father Tony and Father Martin shared their plans. These are some questions that could be used to promote discussion: What will be needed to effectively resource the development of new missionary parishes based on the configuration of the parishes in your own LPA? In terms of lay employment and the development of lay ministries and apostolate, what might be requires? What changes can we anticipate in the way priests and deacons work? If priests of the future work across increasingly wider areas how can we best prepare and support such a development? What changes will this require for the ministry of the Permanent Diaconate? Where Local Pastoral Area bodies presently exist, how might we reconstitute and re-envisage them as serving this development of Missionary Parishes? How could the LPA bodies help in developing the areas of mission, the maintenance and administration of parishes and of church buildings across the wide area of the LPA configurations? What sort of membership would be required? In addressing all these practical and structural questions how can we keep at the forefront the clear perspective: Nihil Sine Christo apart from me you can do nothing (John 15:5)? For it is only by an increase of faith that we can meet the challenges of the present and the future. The results of these discussions will be taken to the next Deanery Meeting which will be held after Easter. AOB St Hugh s Justice and Peace Group asked us to consider the Government s Community Sponsorship Scheme which has promised to accept 20,000 refugees from Syria. Two families, one in the Archdiocese of Cardiff and the other in the Salford Diocese have provided housing for a refugee family and are supporting the family as they settle into their new life here in the UK. Our parishes are presently involved in the Revive

4 Project in Salford which is also supported by Spiritan Group. Sister Eileen from St Vincent s supports on a weekly basis and a group from Holy Angels have also giving support. There is a Facebook group called Altrincham Friends of Refugees where Sister Eileen will appeal for help e.g. an iron or a bed and she has been very grateful for the response she gets. It was agreed to discuss this further at our next meeting having looked at the possibility of being more involved. 6 ALTRINCHAM PASTORAL AREA (APA) HELD ON 09 NOVEMBER 2016 PRESENT: Canon John Rafferty Father Tony Myers Father Martin Onuoha Deacon John Penny Christine Simpson Georgie Marlow Eddie Drozdziak Tom Scanlon Ann Campion APOLOGIES Lisa Kelly Fr John led us in prayer as we started our meeting. REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS MINUTES and MATTERS ARISING. The minutes were approved as being correct. Retreat The retreat given by the Rev. Dom Brendan Thomas was enjoyed by all who attended. Numbers were slightly lower than last year ( ). A short discussion took place as to whether this was because it was held in a different venue each evening; another suggestion was that the publicity for the retreat had been a little late in being passed around the parishes. Holy Angels and St Hugh s had had good representation at the talks and were grateful for the opportunity to join in. Father John suggested that we think about 2017 and make an appropriate booking as soon as possible. Formation Autumn Talks What is Advent given by Father Michael Cupit and to be held at Westleigh on Thursday 24 November, Thursday 1 December, Thursday 8 December at 7.30 pm Review of Local Pastoral Areas Our experience of our Pastoral Area - has been very positive. As a group we have worked well together. Many opportunities for our parishes to worship together and to attend a large variety of talks to help with formation have been arranged. We are aware however that this has not been the experience of all LPA s. The Development of LPA s A long discussion took place on this topic, here are some of the points discussed: To be a more evangelical church, reaching out. Should we be where the people are? How do we help promote tolerance between different cultures. The last three popes have urged us to have a more personal relationship with Jesus how do we promote this? We have been given the gifts of the sacraments, how do we make them more relevant to today? We have walking clubs, bridge clubs and art classes, to mention a few, should we be providing more of this type of activity for our parishes? We have excellent schools within our parish boundaries, our parish priests and deacon are regular visitors and are well known to our children can we use this resource in more ways? The number of priests in the Diocese at present is 66; in ten years time it is estimated to be down to 36 priests. Priests under 60 years of age is estimated to be 20. This is a cause for concern in any future planning. No direct way forward was decided upon but it is hoped that some practical proposal might be decided upon after a period of reflection. AOB The group were told about the Holy Angel s Christmas Market and asked to promote it among their parishioners. It will be held on 10 and 11 of December at both Holy Angels and St Ambrose Prep Hall. Posters will be made available. The meeting was closed with a prayer. Actions All to reflect on our discussion re the future and to try to come up with a positive suggestion as to a course of action in which we could be involved.

AOB Our Mission Together Eddie asked was there an action we should take? A discussion took place re this Diocesan project. REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS MINUTES and MATTERS ARISING. LENTEN ACTIVITIES Family Life and Marriage An opportunity to reflect and discuss subjects surrounding Family Life and Marriage, facilitated by Deacon John Penny, took place on 4, 11, and 18 March. The number of people attending was somewhat disappointing but those that did attend entered into lively discussions on the subject. Deacon John will report on the sessions to the relevant people. As individuals we are all at liberty to send in any comments we might want to be included for consideration in the second phase of the Family Synod discussions taking place in the Vatican between 4 25 October. Lenten Walk Around twenty six people took part in a Palm Sunday walk around the parishes. The weather could have been kinder, but those that took part enjoyed the occasion and the camaraderie. They were very grateful to the kind people in each parish who provided very welcome refreshments. Consideration will be given to doing something similar next year. Palm Sunday Musical Presentation Via Crucis This was performed on Palm Sunday in Holy Angels to a full church. It was a magnificently moving piece of music and was a wonderful way to start Holy Week. A Service of Reconciliation was held at Holy Angels Church on 23 March. It was attended by a good number of parishioners. For the future it was decided that the service would end with people receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation and after a quiet time they would be free to disperse. Youth Worker Kate Wilkinson, the Lay Chaplain at Blessed Thomas Holford, has been in touch with each parish. There is going to be a Youth Mass, (12 16 year olds) on 14 June at 6.30 pm at St Vincent s Church and afterwards refreshments will be served in Westleigh.
