We hope you enjoy worshipping with us. Our service begins on page 119 of A Prayer Book for Australia. OPENING HYMN ADVENT 1 THE PATRIARCHS As we light the candles in our Advent Wreath we remember the preparations which God our Father made for the coming of his Son into the world. Today is the First Sunday in Advent: we remember how God spoke to Abraham, Isaac, Moses and David and told them of the Messiah who was to come. Abraham was promised that, through his descendants, all the world would be blessed.

2 Isaac was told, Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Moses looked forward to the One who would be raised up to take his place as the leader of the people. David knew that a king would follow him who would reign for ever. The first candle is lit (the centre candle remaining unlit until Christmas Day) As we light this first candle we remember Abraham, Isaac, Moses and David and, like them, we look forward to the coming Messiah. Amen. Opening Sentence Stand up and raise your heads; your redemption is drawing near. PRAYER OF THE DAY Eternal God, you have taught us that the night is far spent and the day is at hand: keep us awake and alert, watching for your kingdom, and make us strong in faith, so that when Christ comes in glory to judge the earth, we may go out joyfully to greet him; and, with all your saints, may worship you for ever; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. FIRST READING The first reading is written in the Book of Jeremiah, chapter 33, beginning at verse 14. The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will fulfil the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous branch to spring up for David; and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. And this is the name by which it will be called: The LORD is our righteousness. Hear the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God PSALM 80 Response: Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul. O my God, in you I trust; do not let me be put to shame; do not let my enemies exult over me. Do not let those who wait for you be put to shame; let them be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous. R Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth, and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all day long. R Be mindful of your mercy, O Lord, and of your steadfast love, for they have been from of old. Do not remember the sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to your steadfast love remember me, for your goodness sake, O Lord! R Good and upright is the Lord; therefore, he instructs sinners in the way. He leads the humble in what is right and teaches the humble his way. All the paths of the Lord are steadfast love and faithfulness, for those who keep his covenant and his decrees. R

3 SECOND READING The second reading is from Paul s first letter to the Thessalonians, chapter 3 beginning at verse 9. How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy that we feel before our God because of you? Night and day, we pray most earnestly that we may see you face to face and restore whatever is lacking in your faith. Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus direct our way to you. And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, just as we abound in love for you. And may he so strengthen your hearts in holiness that you may be blameless before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints. Hear the word of the Lord GRADUAL HYMN THE GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Alleluia, alleluia! The people will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. Alleluia! THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Luke chapter 21, beginning at verse 25 Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on the earth distress among nations confused by the roaring of the sea and the waves. People will faint from fear and foreboding of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to take place, stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near. Then he told them a parable: Look at the fig tree and all the trees; as soon as they sprout leaves you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day does not catch you unexpectedly, like a trap. For it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole earth. Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of Man. Every day he was teaching in the temple, and at night he would go out and spend the night on the Mount of Olives, as it was called. And all the people would get up early in the morning to listen to him in the temple. For the Gospel of the Lord Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ

Others are invited forward to receive a blessing (please keep a prayer book in your hand and your head bowed if you would like a blessing). PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION God for whom we wait, we thank you that you have fed us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation. As we joyfully await your Son, keep us ever watchful that we may be ready to stand before him on the day of his coming... Father we offer ourselves to you as a living sacrifice through Jesus Christ our Lord. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen. The position description is on the narthex noticeboard. Please read it and see if it suits you or someone else whom you can ask to consider it. The position is NOT for receiving or investigating allegations of abuse it is more an administrative role to ensure safe church policies are followed and records maintained in the parish.

7 ADVENT STUDY Tuesday 4 th, 11 th, 18 th December, 7 pm in the narthex. There will be an Advent study on these dates at St. Augustine s. Please place your name on the list in the narthex if you want to attend the St. Augustine s study so we can organise copies of any material. IF YOU ARE UNWELL AT HOME OR IN HOSPITAL Please let the office know if you would like a visit from someone from the church and/or would like your name on the prayer list. MELANESIAN BROTHERS Visas for two of the Melanesian Brothers have been approved, so we hope to welcome them in the New Year. Donation: a paper note to support the provision of sustainable feminine hygiene products for women and girls in under developed countries to enable them to attend school and work every week of every month Organised by members of the Trefoil Guilds of Shepparton THIRD SUNDAY am service Starting in December for a trial period of six months, the service on the third Sunday of the month will not be a Eucharist service. The Eucharist will still be celebrated at the 8.30 service.
