See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 1 John 3:1 T h e L o r d s S e r v i c e J u n e 1 0,
Why Liturgy? At Redeemer we have what some would describe as a liturgical service. We have chosen to structure our service from week to week with a very clear and fixed order, including the use of various printed prayers, confessions, and other congregational recitations. We recognize that such a structured service could encourage a dry, formalistic worship that lacks true heart engagement. Merely going through the motions has always been, and continues to be a danger in the Christian church. At Redeemer, the forms we use in our service are intended to be a vehicle to help us express authentic worship to God, not an end in themselves. However the danger of going through the motions is one that every church faces, no matter how casual or unstructured the service may be. As one author has noted, One can sing the same praise songs repetitively and without much thought, just as one can say the Apostles Creed each week without adequate reflection on what one is professing. The truth is that every church has a liturgy. The word liturgy is based on the Latin work for service, and simply refers to the order of service that a church follows week to week. Even if it is very simple, every church follows some order of service, and has some rationale on which that order is based. In many evangelical churches, for example, the order of service every week is: Prayer, singing, preaching, offering, and closing prayer. This is not a complex liturgy, but it is still a liturgy. The question is not, therefore, whether a church has a liturgy, but whether or not the liturgy used best reflects what the Bible teaches about how we should approach and worship God. The order of service we use at Redeemer is both biblical and gospel orientated. Every week through our liturgy we cycle through the wonderful truths of the Gospel in what can be summarized as the 5 C s - Call, Cleansing, Consecration, Communion, Commission. God Call us into His Presence: Worship begins with God s invitation to worship. As sinners, we can only come as the result of his gracious invitation. We respond to his call by entering his presence with singing (Psalm 100)! God Cleanses us from our Sin: Having entered his majestic presence, we are confronted with our own sinfulness and unworthiness. We confess our sin together, and receive God s assurance of forgiveness because of Christ. God Consecrates us to His Service: God consecrates us through the reading of Scripture and the preaching of the Word. We offer prayer, offerings, and songs of praise. God Communes with us: God affirms his relationship with us by inviting us to commune with him at his table. God Commissions us into the World: God sends us out into the world with his blessing that we might be salt and light, living for his glory in a watching world. 2
The Lord s Service June 10, 2018 Welcome and Announcements Prelude Silent Prayer of Preparation Call to Worship Pastor Scott Korljan 1 Peter 2:9-10 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. =Stand, if able Bold Words=Congregation 3

Invocation Psalm 124:8 Pastor: Our help is in the name of the Lord, People: who made heaven and earth. Let us pray. The Greeting 2 Thessalonians 1:2; 2 Corinthians 13:14 Grace to you and peace from God the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen Response #53 Praise to the Lord, the Almighty (Verse 5 only) Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him! All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before him! Let the amen sound from his people again; gladly fore er we adore him. =Stand, if able Bold Words=Congregation 5
Confession of Sin Colossians 3:1-4 If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Almighty and most merciful Father, we are thankful that your mercy is higher than the heavens, wider than our wanderings, deeper than all our sin. Forgive our lack of contentment and failure to be thankful for all that we have. Forgive our lack of joy in Christ and our indifference to the treasures of heaven. Forgive our careless attitudes toward your purposes, our obsession with creating a life of constant pleasure, and looking to the things of the world to give us what only you can. Help us to change our way of life so that we may desire what is good, love what you love, do what you command, and rejoice always, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Declaration of Forgiveness Ephesians 2:4-5 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ by grace you have been saved. =Stand, if able Bold Words=Congregation 6

Prayers of Intercession and the Lord s Prayer Scripture Readings Romans 6:1-11 Giving God Our Offerings Doxology Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise him all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. Sermon Text Reading 1 John 3:1-3 See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. 3 And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure. This is the Word of the Lord! Thanks be to God! Sermon The Gospel and My Identity: Finding and Keeping Our Identity in Christ Pastor Scott Korljan Prayer of Application Sermon Hymn #521 My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less (Verse 1 only) My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus name. On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; all other ground is sinking sand, all other ground is sinking sand. 8
Holy Communion Invitation to the Lord s Table We warmly welcome to the table all who trust in Jesus Christ for their salvation, have been baptized and have publicly professed their faith as members of any evangelical Christian church. We encourage families to come forward together, but ask that young children not partake of the elements until they have met with their Elders to make a profession of their faith. We encourage those not participating to spend this time reflecting on Individual Prayers for Communion on Page 15. We hope these prayers will be helpful to you as you consider your relationship to Jesus Christ and His people, the church. Affirmation of Faith The Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic* church, (*universal) the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 9
Prayer of Thanksgiving and Consecration The Lord be with you. Ruth 2:4 And also with you. Lift up your hearts! Lamentations 3:41 We lift them up to the Lord! Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. Psalm 118:1 It is right to give him thanks and praise. It is truly right and our greatest joy to give you thanks and praise for you are holy, O God of majesty, and blessed is Jesus Christ, your Son. As we come now to the supper which he gave to us, we ask for the blessing of the Holy Spirit, that the bread that we break and the cup that we bless would be a participation in the body and blood of our Lord. And now, with the angels, and all the company of heaven, we magnify your glorious Name, evermore praising you and singing: Sanctus Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts. The whole earth is full of his glory, the whole earth is full of his glory, the whole earth is full of his glory. Holy is the Lord. Words of Institution and Breaking of the Bread =Stand, if able Bold Words=Congregation 10

Grant that we may go into the world, in the strength of your Spirit, to serve you and others through Christ our Lord. Amen. Dismissal Come, People of the Risen King (Verse 3 only) Come, young and old from ev ry land, men and women of the faith. Come, those with full or empty hands; find the riches of His grace. Over all the world His people sing; shore to shore we hear them call the Truth that cries through ev ry age: Our God is all in all. Rejoice! Rejoice! Let ev ry tongue rejoice! 15 Individual Prayers for Communion Prayer for Those Searching for the Truth Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth and the life. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen. Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you, I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared to hope. I repent of my sins of self-ruling and self-saving. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross and offering forgiveness and new life. Thank you that my sin and rebellion are Yours, and Your righteous, perfect, and obedient life is mine through faith in You. Knowing that you died on the cross and have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive and rest upon you alone as my Savior and Lord. I now resolve in humble reliance on the Holy Spirit and through the power of the gospel graciously working in my life to walk in a manner pleasing to You. Amen. Prayer for those struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in You the fulfillment of all my need, and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on You, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to You, the pioneer and perfecter of my faith. Amen. 15
