2 Dear Church School Parents, On SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2012, the new Church School year begins for our Children. The world today is often a strange and confusing place. Sometimes it is bright and full of opportunity. Sometimes it seems dark and misguided. As parents, it is our responsibility to equip our children with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate their way through an ever-changing environment and forces beyond our control. For this reason, our children s religious education is of paramount importance in the wake of these forces, we must help shape our children s perception of God, humanity, and the world. Because the world often feels indifferent or ignorant, we Orthodox Christians passionately believe that the religious education offered in our Church Schools is absolutely essential in ensuring God has a place in our children s lives. Church School is meant to impart upon children the loving teachings of Jesus Christ and the Orthodox Church so that our children may make real life decisions that are in line with those teachings. We are blessed to have at our Church, a dedicated staff of devout and knowledgeable Orthodox Christians who have assumed this awesome responsibility. Each one of our teachers has been touched by God and has been called to this ministry. They sacrifice their time to prepare lessons which impart the soul-saving teachings of our faith. They have witnessed how a young soul detached from God can be consumed by the destructive forces of our world. They have also witnessed through their own trials and tribulations the peace and victory one finds in a living relationship with God. Once again, as we find ourselves at the threshold of a new Church School year, we here at our St. Lazarus Ravanica parish are eager to receive your children that we may proclaim the truth of the Gospel and the love of Jesus Christ to your children. With our teachers using the curriculum of our Diocese, in conjunction with my input and our Church School Superintendents, Julie Djurich and Ruza Batanjski, we anticipate a rich learning environment for our children. Please make every effort possible to come to church before 10 a.m. when Divine Liturgy begins. Children, as last year, will dismiss to classes at their regular scheduled time. We are looking forward to an educational and inspirational Church School year for our children. Be assured that we will do everything possible to bless our children with the teachings of our Faith. However, we need the cooperation of ALL of the parents. This means coming to Church every Sunday and on time. It means patiently waiting until your child s lesson is completed before leaving church. It means becoming involved in and supporting our Church School Program as parents, and, finally, it is essential that you discuss with your children what was learned in Church School. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. Remember, religious education should be a daily experience for people of all ages, children and adults. On behalf of our Church School staff, we look forward to working with you in educating your child in the teachings of Jesus Christ and His Church. Yours in Christ, Proto Zivan Urosev

6 PRAYERS/MOLITVE YOUR CHILDREN WILL BE LEARNING THIS YEAR The Nicene Creed Simbol Vere The Symbol of Faith of Orthodox Christians I believe in one God, the Father almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth, and all things visible and invisible. AND in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the only-begotten, begotten of the Father before all ages. Light of light, true God of true God, begotten, not made; of one essence with the Father, by whom all things were made. Who for us men and for our salvation came down from Heaven and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became man. And, He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate and suffered and was buried. And the third day, He rose again, according to the Scriptures, and ascended into Heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father; And he shall come again with glory to judge the living and the dead, whose kingdom shall have no end. AND in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of Life, who proceeds from the Father, who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and gloried. Who spoke by the prophets. And in ONE Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Verujem u jednoga Boga, Oca, Svedrzitelja, Tvorca neba i zemlje i svega vidljivog i nevidljivog. Cekam vaskrsenje mrtvih, I zivot buducega veka. Amin. The Lord's Prayer OCE NAS Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy Name; Thy Kingdom come; Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from Evil. Amen. Otce nas, ize jesi na nebesjeh. Da svjatitsja imja Tvoje, da pridet carstvije Tvoje, da budet volja Tvoja, jako na nebesi i na zemlji. Hljeb nas nasushnij, dazd nam dnes i ostavi nam dolgi nasja, jakoze i mi ostavljajem dolznikom nasim. I ne vovedi nas vo iskushenije, no izbavi nas ot lukavago. AMIN Prayer before lessons: O Most merciful Lord, send us the grace of your Holy Spirit, who enlightens and strengthens our spiritual powers. Help us be attentive to the teachings presented, so that we may grow up for the glory of Thee, our Creator, for the joy of our parents, and for the benefit of our Church and our Country. Amen. Amin.

7 Welcome Back to the Ravanica Cultural Program! To all Ravanica Cultural Program (RCP) teachers, parents and especially students we welcome you back to what we expect will be an excellent year for our program. With respect to the day that we hold our program, we carefully considered several different options based on a review of the facts, discussions with our priest and parishioners, and analysis of recent survey results. Taking everything into account and after considerable deliberation - it was decided to move the RCP back to Friday night. Of course any decision and change is going to be better received by some rather than others but we are confident this is the optimal decision after taking all relevant factors into account. In addition to the move back to Friday, we will especially be focused on improving the quality of the program when it comes not only to content but also with respect to discipline, professionalism and attendance. Importantly we view each of these as applying not only to students, but also to teachers and even parents. We feel that this approach will bring greater quality and thus better results and rewards for everyone, but especially for our students. Along with these goals, we will also continue to work on creating and maintaining an open and collaborative environment where we will encourage a maximum level of dialogue and feedback. With that, let's all work together to make this year of transition as good as it can possibly be! Directors: Zoran Djurich Milorad Skoric!,, og a ().,,, e..,,,.,. a a e,. e,., a! :
