2 The Cho-sen Words Greetings! Welcome to this season of spring, and a time of re-birthing. We are a vibrant multi-cultural and multi-generational church. We are seeking to be a faith community which welcomes people of all backgrounds and walks of life. We believe in reflecting God s inclusive love for all. Recently, I have come across the following article from Scientific American entitled How Diversity Makes Us Smarter : Decades of research by organizational scientists, psychologists, sociologists, economists and demographers show that socially diverse groups (that is, those with a diversity of race, ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation) are more innovative than homogeneous groups. It seems obvious that a group of people with diverse individual expertise would be better than a homogeneous group at solving complex, non-routine problems. It is less obvious that social diversity should work in the same way yet the science shows that it does. This is not only because people with different backgrounds bring new information. Simply interacting with individuals who are different forces group members to prepare better, to anticipate alternative viewpoints and to expect that reaching consensus will take effort. Being around people who are different from us makes us more creative, more diligent and harder-working. I can attest to this in my ministry. One of the real gifts I have received while growing up in Hawaii was learning how to live in harmony with people of all cultural and other backgrounds. Living in the islands motivate people to learn how to co-exist and cooperate with others, especially those who are different from you. After all, how far could people drive away or swim away from those they don t like in that island state? Not too far. Throughout my life and ministry, I have been inspired by Henry Nouwen, a remarkable spiritual leader of our time, who said: Your difference from me is your gift to me; and my difference from you is my gift to you. Morristown UMC we are God s gift to our beloved community here and to the world. Our mission is to help our people and others to embrace all the differences as mutual gifts for each other. We can do this by becoming God s beloved community. For our Easter Celebration this year, I pray that the Resurrection of our Lord will bring all peoples together as one God s family united in God s amazing gift of life and love. See you in Church. Love and Peace, Brandon 2

This will be the first time in many years to hold our joint Easter service. After the service, we are invited to a good breakfast at the Market Street Mission. We anticipate about 60 to 80 from the Market Street Mission and several from our church. So, come on down and let us welcome our Lord s Resurrection in early Easter morning together. Nueva Esperanza Pastor Charles Perez Spring is here and welcome to a new season! I am so excited, as your associate pastor, in being part of the ASP mission this year. To have the opportunity to help in one of the unloading days and to build relationship with some of the great people involved was such a blessing to me. Nueva Esperanza has two upcoming events about which I ask for your prayers, and of course you are more than welcome to join us. On April 2 nd we will be having a special service called, "God Loves the Immigrant." The worship and preaching will be on this subject. Afterwards, we will have a workshop, with some light food, on the subject of immigration called, "Know Your Rights." This is a service and a workshop for our immigrant brothers and sisters to experience God's grace and for them to be knowledgeable on the subject of immigration according to today's politics. On June 4 th we will have our one year anniversary celebration and we will invite all of our Hispanic Congregations in our UMC and Morristown UMC to come and give God praise for what he is doing in our church and in our community to make the circle wider. Service will be at 3:30pm with a meal afterwards. We will also celebrate our first four members of Nueva Esperanza into our Morristown UMC family and a baptism as well. This is an exciting season of blossoming that I look forward to, and hope and pray that all of you will join us.

5 VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL Hero Central It s not too early to begin thinking about our annual Vacation Bible School. This year VBS will be held here at MUMC August 7-11, 2017 and will be organized jointly with Bethel AME Church and the Morristown Korean Methodist Church. The theme is Hero Central Discover Your Strength in God. Will you (or your child) attend? Will you volunteer to help out? Will you support the program? Or all three? We especially need a volunteer to handle publicity you won t even have to attend VBS. We also could use your help in accumulating some of the items that we will need for our craft projects. We will need toilet paper rolls, paper towel rolls, and glass baby food jars. Thanks so much for your help. Please contact the church office or speak with Nancy Frantz to express your interest. You may reach Nancy at or frantzn@optimum.net. Just a note to thank everyone who supported our church financially during the past year and pledged in our 2017 Stewardship Campaign. Although financial challenges remain, for the first time in a long time we finished the year just barely in the black, meaning we did not have to dip into the new year s revenues to meet our final Conference Obligation payment. Much of the credit for this goes to the close-the-gap efforts led by Pastor Brandon and supported by members who went over and above their pledges in Again, many thanks to all who supported the church financially in Some information on the pledge drive. The amount pledged for 2017 was about 1% more than was pledged for There was a 7% increase in the number of pledges and a total of 14 new pledges came in. 41% of the people who pledged in 2016 increased their 2017 pledge. Your financial support is the fuel that moves us forward in 2017 allowing us to realize our vision of becoming God s beloved community, changing lives and transforming communities. Thanks to all for your continued support of MUMC. The Finance Committee Thank for all the kind words and prayers for my family and me after the death of my father, Yet Pang Tom. Pastor Brandon Cho and Pastor Vijaya Kumar (of the First United Methodist Church of Scotch Plains where my parents attended the Chinese services) led a lovely funeral service which celebrated his long and active life with family and friends. Sincerely, Cherry 5

6 Fourth Annual Shower for OUR Kitchen Sunday, April 2, 2017 Fellowship Hall All members and friends invited! Bagels and coffee are a delightful treat on Sunday mornings after worship service. But, do you ever wonder who supplies and coordinates Coffee Hour and the other uses of our kitchen? Well, we have a loyal and caring kitchen crew, but they need our yearly help with the Kitchen Shower to re-supply the things we use most often. So please see the list below and bring in your donations so that we can continue these events. We have taken some items off previous lists, but know that our greatest needs are for Coffee and Paper Towels. And if you can t shop, we will happily accept store gift cards or cash donations. We ll shop for you! Thank you for helping to restock our kitchen and helping the church s budget! If you are interested in reserving one of those instead of lilies, please contact the office at Mona s Musings All is right with our world here at MUMC Cesar Torres is home!!! He was scheduled to leave for Colombia on March 14 th which turned out to be the day of the big snowstorm. His flight was canceled early and he was able to reschedule for the 13 th and so avoided the chaos that such a storm brings and arrived safely in Colombia. The purpose of this trip was to make arrangements for the 11/11 Mission trip he intends to make in November. He also spent time with family and friends in Monte Negro. While there he became aware of the plight of a beautiful little four-year-old girl named Milagros. She was unable to walk and her family couldn t afford a wheelchair. She was being transported in an old baby stroller. He knew that three of his Colombian friends who now make their home in Morristown were also visiting family in Monte Negro. He approached them and together they purchased a brand new stroller for her. He also located an old beat-up wheelchair and he had it refurbished and presented it to her. Look at that sweet little face. This is so typical of Cesar. Those of us who are lucky enough to know and love him are aware of all the good that he does here and in Colombia. You will hear more about his third annual mission trip planned for November in future issues of the Spire. Welcome home, mi amor it s so good to have you back you were sorely missed. I also have my Thursday volunteer, Nancy Frantz, back. She, too, was tremendously missed and I ve already told her that if she keeps deserting me, I m going to dock her pay. One less thank you hug, Nancy. Kudos to our famous Rummage King, Andrew Cattano and all the dedicated folks who worked so diligently to make Rummage 2017 a success. Countless hours of picking up furniture, opening bags of treasures, cleaning, displaying and pricing went into this cooperative effort. I m sure there will be a full accounting of that success in next month s Spire. As usual, I did my share of purchasing wonderful items for which I have absolutely no need. 10
