3 Welcome to St. James Cathedral! Whether you are here for the first time, or are a regular worshipper, we are delighted to have you with us. If you are new to us and you would like to learn about the mission and ministry of the cathedral, or you would like us to be in contact with you, please complete one of the visitor cards available in the pews. You can place the completed card in the offering plate or hand it to an usher or member of the clergy. This order of service is designed to help you participate in today s liturgy. Everything you need is contained in this booklet. Children in Worship We welcome your children to participate in our worship. We have created an open space to the front right of the pews for young ones to play under your supervision. Today s children are tomorrow s adult worshippers, and we deeply value their presence. Holy Communion We offer God s gracious gift of Holy Communion to all those present who wish to receive it. If you prefer simply to receive a blessing, come forward and indicate so by crossing your arms over your chest. Please follow the direction of the ushers when it is time to come forward. If you wish to receive a gluten-free wafer, please let the priest know. We are also very happy to bring Communion to people in the pews, if you are concerned about being able to come to the altar rail. Please let an usher know if this would be helpful for you. St. James actively supports the fair trade movement. Our communion wine growers in South Africa can rely on stable incomes to provide for their families, pay workers fairly, and provide working environments that benefits the land and the communities that live and depend on it. Parking Reduced-rate parking is available Sundays at R.O.W. Parking Garage, 50 E. Ohio, for $2 for up to six hours from the time of entering the garage. 7 Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah. (60:1 6) Jerusalem, stand up! Shine! Your new day is dawning. The glory of the Lord shines brightly on you. The earth and its people are covered with darkness, but the glory of the Lord is shining upon you. Nations and kings will come to the light of your dawning day. The Lord said: Open your eyes! Look around! Crowds are coming. Your sons are on their way from distant lands; your daughters are being carried like little children. When you see this, your faces will glow; your hearts will pound and swell with pride. Treasures from across the sea and the wealth of nations will be brought to you. Your country will be covered with caravans of young camels from Midian and Ephah. The people of Sheba will bring gold and spices in praise of me, the Lord. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Contemporary English Version (CEV) Copyright 2005 by American Bible Society Our children are invited to assist in the procession of the Gospel book. As the Deacon carries the Gospel book past the play area and forward in the main aisle, all children are encouraged to come out of their pews to join in the procession. The children are welcome to gather around the Deacon as the Gospel is read. Please stand and sing. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION 7

8 HOLY GOSPEL Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. (2:1 12) Glory to you, Lord Christ. Jesus was born in the town of Bethlehem in Judea during the time when Herod was king. When Jesus was born, some wise men from the east came to Jerusalem. They asked, Where is the baby who was born to be the king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him. When King Herod heard this, he was troubled, as were all the people in Jerusalem. Herod called a meeting of all the leading priests and teachers of the law and asked them where the Christ would be born. They answered, In the town of Bethlehem in Judea. The prophet wrote about this in the Scriptures: But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are not just an insignificant village in Judah. A ruler will come from you who will be like a shepherd for my people Israel. Then Herod had a secret meeting with the wise men and learned from them the exact time they first saw the star. He sent the wise men to Bethlehem, saying, Look carefully for the child. When you find him, come tell me so I can worship him too. After the wise men heard the king, they left. The star that they had seen in the east went before them until it stopped above the place where the child was. When the wise men saw the star, they were filled with joy. They came to the house where the child was and saw him with his mother, Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. They opened their gifts and gave him treasures of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. But God warned the wise men in a dream not to go back to Herod, so they returned to their own country by a different way. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. 15 Words: Reginald Heber ( ), alt. Music: Morning Star, James Proctor Harding ( ) GREAT THANKSGIVING Please stand. God be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. Reader Why is it right to give thanks and praise? Listen, and we will hear. Lord of all life, you created the universe, where all living things reflect your glory. You give us this great and beautiful earth, to discover and to cherish. You give us friends and families, busy streets for young and old, the life of an earthly city fulfilled in your city to come. You made us all, each wonderfully different, to join with the angels and sing your praise: 15

16 sing. We thank you, loving Father, because, when we turned away, you sent Jesus, your Son. He gave his life for us on the cross and shows us the way to live. Send your Holy Spirit that these gifts of bread and wine may be for us Christ s body and his blood. Reader Why do we share this bread and wine? Listen, and we will hear. On the night before he died, when darkness had fallen, Jesus took bread. He gave thanks, broke it, and shared it with his disciples, saying: This is my body, given for you. Do this to remember me. After they had eaten, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and shared it with his disciples, saying: This is my blood, poured out for you and for many, for the forgiveness of sins. So Father, with this bread and this cup we celebrate his love, his death, his risen life. As you feed us with these gifts, send your Holy Spirit, and change us more and more to be like Jesus our Savior. sing. Reader Why do we follow Jesus Christ? Because he is God s saving love in action. Help us, Father, to love one another, as we look forward to that day when suffering is ended, and all creation is gathered in your loving arms. And now with all your saints we give you glory, through Jesus Christ, in the strength of the Spirit, today and for ever. 16
