Welcome to St. James Cathedral! Whether you are visiting or are a regular worshipper, you are welcome at St. James without conditions or expectations. This booklet contains everything you need to worship with us today. If you would like to learn about the mission and ministry of the cathedral, please complete one of the visitor cards available in the pews and place it in the offering plate or hand it to an usher. CHILDREN IN WORSHIP Children are always welcome here, and this service is designed to actively engage them in worship. There is an open space to the front right of the pews for children to play under your supervision and a changing station for parents of our youngest members under the church in the restrooms. HOLY COMMUNION We offer God s gracious gift of Holy Communion to anyone who wishes to receive it. Please follow the ushers directions. If you prefer to receive a blessing, come forward and cross your arms over your chest. Let the priest know if you would need a gluten-free wafer or the alcohol-free chalice. We are also happy to bring Communion to you if you are unable to come to the altar rail. Please let an usher know if this would be helpful for you. PARKING On Sundays, reduced-rate parking is available at R.O.W. Parking Garage (50 E. Ohio) for $3 for up to six hours from the time of entering the garage. Discounts are also available for all-day parking at Ohio Ontario Self Park (33 W. Ontario) for $9. 5 COLLECT OF THE DAY Presider Presider God be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Creator of the heavens, who led the Magi by a star to worship to Christ-child: guide and sustain us, that we may find our journey s end in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Please be seated. Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah. (60:1 6) Jerusalem, stand up! Shine! Your new day is dawning. The glory of the Lord shines brightly on you. The earth and its people are covered with darkness, but the glory of the Lord is shining upon you. Nations and kings will come to the light of your dawning day. The Lord said: Open your eyes! Look around! Crowds are coming. Your sons are on their way from distant lands; your daughters are being carried like little children. When you see this, your faces will glow; your hearts will pound and swell with pride. Treasures from across the sea and the wealth of nations will be brought to you. Your country will be covered with caravans of young camels from Midian and Ephah. The people of Sheba will bring gold and spices in praise of me, the Lord. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Contemporary English Version (CEV) Copyright 2005 GOSPEL ACCLAMATION As the gospeller carries the Gospel book past the play area, all children are encouraged to join in the procession, gathering around as the Gospel is read. Music: Caribbean traditional, arr. John L. Bell (b. 1949) 5

HOLY GOSPEL Gospeller The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. (2:1 12) Glory to you, Lord Christ. Jesus was born in the town of Bethlehem in Judea during the time when Herod was king. When Jesus was born, some wise men from the east came to Jerusalem. They asked, Where is the baby who was born to be the king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him. When King Herod heard this, he was troubled, as were all the people in Jerusalem. Herod called a meeting of all the leading priests and teachers of the law and asked them where the Christ would be born. They answered, In the town of Bethlehem in Judea. The prophet wrote about this in the Scriptures: But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are not just an insignificant village in Judah. A ruler will come from you who will be like a shepherd for my people Israel. Then Herod had a secret meeting with the wise men and learned from them the exact time they first saw the star. He sent the wise men to Bethlehem, saying, Look carefully for the child. When you find him, come tell me so I can worship him too. After the wise men heard the king, they left. The star that they had seen in the east went before them until it stopped above the place where the child was. When the wise men saw the star, they were filled with joy. They came to the house where the child was and saw him with his mother, Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. They opened their gifts and gave him treasures of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. But God warned the wise men in a dream not to go back to Herod, so they returned to their own country by a different way. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. New Century Version (NCV) Copyright 2005 SERMON The Rev. Anna Broadbent Curate 6

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Words: Timothy Dudley Smith (b. 1926); from the Apostles' Creed Music: Nettleton, melody from A Repository of Sacred Music, Part II, 1813 PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE The deacon passes around a microphone so that all may hear the prayers of everyone gathered for worship. Our world, including prayer for those who govern and lead us. Our local community, including those whom we encounter regularly. Those in particular need, including the sick in mind, body, or spirit. Those who have died, especially those whose death was recent. PEACE The presider says The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. The people greet each other in the name of the Lord. 7

GREAT THANKSGIVING Presider Presider Presider Reader God be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. Why is it right to give thanks and praise? Listen, and we will hear. honor and praise be yours always and everywhere, mighty creator, ever-living God, through Jesus Christ your only Son our Lord: for at this time we celebrate your glory made present in our midst. In the coming of the Magi the King of all the world was revealed to the nations. In the waters of baptism Jesus was revealed as the Christ, the Savior sent to redeem us. In the water made wine the new creation was revealed at the wedding feast. Poverty was turned to riches, sorrow into joy. Therefore with all the angels of heaven we lift our voices to proclaim the glory of your name and sing our joyful hymn of praise: We thank you, loving Father, because, when we turned away, you sent Jesus, your Son. He gave his life for us on the cross and shows us the way to live. Send your Holy Spirit that these gifts of bread and wine may be for us Christ s body and his blood. Reader Why do we share this bread and wine? Listen, and we will hear. 10

On the night before he died, when darkness had fallen, Jesus took bread. He gave thanks, broke it, and shared it with his disciples, saying: This is my body, given for you. Do this to remember me. After they had eaten, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and shared it with his disciples, saying: This is my blood, poured out for you and for many, for the forgiveness of sins. So Father, with this bread and this cup we celebrate his love, his death, his risen life. As you feed us with these gifts, send your Holy Spirit, and change us more and more to be like Jesus our Savior. Reader Why do we follow Jesus Christ? Because he is God s saving love in action. Help us, Father, to love one another, as we look forward to that day when suffering is ended, and all creation is gathered in your loving arms. And now with all your saints we give you glory, through Jesus Christ, in the strength of the Spirit, today and for ever. 11

LORD S PRAYER The presider introduces the Lord s Prayer. Hymnal S119 Music: Plainsong; adapt. Charles Winifred Douglas ( ) 12

BREAKING OF THE BREAD The presider says The Gifts of God for the People of God. We offer God s gracious gift of Holy Communion to anyone who wishes to receive it. If you prefer to receive a blessing, come forward and cross your arms over your chest. Let the priest know if you would prefer a gluten-free wafer. POST-COMMUNION PRAYER Please stand. The presider says Let us pray. Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen. 13

POST-COMMUNION HYMN Hymnal

Words & Music: Three Kings of Orient, John Henry Hopkins, Jr. ( ), alt. BLESSING The presider prays for God s blessing on the gathered people, saying May God the Father, who led the wise men by the shining of a star to find the Christ, the Light from Light, lead you also in your pilgrimage to find the Lord. Amen. May God, who has delivered us from the dominion of darkness, give us a place with the saints in light in the kingdom of his beloved Son. Amen. May the light of the glorious gospel of Christ shine in your hearts and fill your lives with his joy and peace. Amen. And the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen. DISMISSAL Presider Let us go forth in the name of Christ. Thanks be to God. 15
