2 Welcome to St. James Cathedral! Whether you are here for the first time, or are a regular worshipper, we are delighted to have you with us. If you are new to us and you would like to learn about the mission and ministry of the cathedral, or you would like us to be in contact with you, please complete one of the visitor cards available in the back of the Chapel. You can place the completed card in the offering plate or hand it to an usher or member of the clergy. This order of service is designed to help you participate in today s liturgy. Everything you need is contained in this booklet. Holy Communion We offer God s gracious gift of Holy Communion to all those present who wish to receive it. If you prefer simply to receive a blessing, come forward and indicate so by crossing your arms over your chest. Please follow the direction of the ushers when it is time to come forward. If you wish to receive a gluten-free wafer, please let the priest know. We are also very happy to bring Communion to people in the pews, if you are concerned about being able to come to the altar rail. Please let an usher know if this would be helpful for you. St. James actively supports the fair trade movement. Our communion wine growers in South Africa can rely on stable incomes to provide for their families, pay workers fairly, and provide working environments that benefits the land and the communities that live and depend on it. Parking Reduced-rate parking is available Sundays at R.O.W. Parking Garage, 50 E. Ohio, for $2 for up to six hours from the time of entering the garage. Discounts are also available for all-day parking at Ohio Ontario Self Park, 33 W. Ontario for $9. To receive a reduced-rate parking voucher, please go to the Welcome Center desk following the service. For your information Restrooms are located below the narthex at the Wabash Avenue entrance of the cathedral and in the Welcome Center connected to the east end of the cathedral. 3 Gathering OPENING ACCLAMATION As the clergy enter the Chapel, please stand. Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be God s kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. GLORIA Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. COLLECT OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Lord God of the nations, we have seen the star of your glory rising in splendor. The radiance of your incarnate Word pierces the darkness that covers the earth and signals the dawn of peace and justice. Make radiant the lives of your people with that same brightness, and beckon all the nations to walk as one in your light. We ask this through Jesus Christ, your Word made flesh, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, in the splendor of eternal light, one God for ever and ever. Amen. 3

4 Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah. (60:1 6) Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. For darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the Lord will arise upon you, and his glory will appear over you. Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn. Lift up your eyes and look around; they all gather together, they come to you; your sons shall come from far away, and your daughters shall be carried on their nurses arms. Then you shall see and be radiant; your heart shall thrill and rejoice, because the abundance of the sea shall be brought to you, the wealth of the nations shall come to you. A multitude of camels shall cover you, the young camels of Midian and Ephah; all those from Sheba shall come. They shall bring gold and frankincense, and shall proclaim the praise of the Lord. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Read responsively by the Reader and the people. PSALM 72:1 7, Give the King your justice, O God, and your righteousness to the King s Son; That he may rule your people righteously and the poor with justice; That the mountains may bring prosperity to the people, and the little hills bring righteousness. He shall defend the needy among the people; he shall rescue the poor and crush the oppressor. He shall live as long as the sun and moon endure, from one generation to another. He shall come down like rain upon the mown field, like showers that water the earth. In his time shall the righteous flourish; there shall be abundance of peace till the moon shall be no more. The kings of Tarshish and of the isles shall pay tribute, and the kings of Arabia and Saba offer gifts. 4

5 kings shall bow down before him, and all the nations do him service. For he shall deliver the poor who cries out in distress, and the oppressed who has no helper. He shall have pity on the lowly and poor; he shall preserve the lives of the needy. He shall redeem their lives from oppression and violence, and dear shall their blood be in his sight. HOLY GOSPEL Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. (2:1 12) Glory to you, Lord Christ. In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage. When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel. Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage. When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 6 NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Let us pray for the Church and for the world. I ask your prayers for God s people throughout the world; for our Bishop Jeffrey Lee, our Presiding Bishop Michael Curry; for this gathering; and for all ministers and people. Pray for the Church. Silence is kept. I ask your prayers for peace; for goodwill among nations; and for the well-being of all people, especially our president, Barack Obama, our president-elect, Donald Trump, our governor, Bruce Rauner, our mayor, Rahm Emanuel, for all candidates for public office, and for all who will vote this week. Pray for justice and peace. Silence is kept. I ask your prayers for the sick, especially Sue Chappell, the poor, the hungry, the oppressed, and those in prison. Pray for those in any need or trouble. Silence is kept. I ask your prayers for all who seek God, or a deeper knowledge of the Holy One. Pray that they may find and be found by God. Silence is kept. 6

7 I ask your prayers for the departed, for those known and loved within our own community, including Diane Margeson and Wiletta Hafner, and for those who died as victims of gun violence last week, including Stephen (20), Derrick (21), Richard (21), and Anthony (58) and those who died on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, James (18), Roy (21), Jamil (25), Jerry (22), David (24), Fabian (18), Niko (21), Nathaniel (30), Demetrius (28), and Juan (27). Pray for all who have died. Silence is kept. Praise God for those in every generation in whom Christ has been honored. Pray that we may have grace to glorify Christ in our own day, especially Frances Walker DeHaan being baptized today. Silence is kept. The adds a concluding Collect, saying Almighty and eternal God, ruler of all things in heaven and earth: Mercifully accept the prayers of your people, and strengthen us to do your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. CONFESSION OF SIN Deacon Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. The concludes with an absolution. For more information, please see our website. GREAT THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. Revealing God, you send the light of a star, and in that light we see the truth of who you are and the truth of who we are. Like the magi you call us to worship you, but like the magi we mistake where you truly belong and where we truly belong. Yet in revelation you direct us to yourself and in incarnation you meet us in yourself. You become what we are that we might become what you are. And so draw us to the company where your angels gather around your eternal throne, singing their hymn of unending praise. Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. God of wonder, as the magi brought gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, so we bring these gifts of bread and wine. In those gifts we see your grief at the way we crucified your Son, the holy one among us, but also the wonder of how you raised him to be our king in glory forever. Send down your Holy Spirit, that we may discover what it means to be of you and in you, and that this bread of honest toil and this wine of joyous celebration may be for us the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ; who at supper with his disciples, took bread, gave you thanks, broke the bread, and gave it to them, saying, Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. 8

9 After supper, he took the cup. Again he gave it to his disciples, saying, Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Deacon Great is the mystery of faith. Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. God of wisdom, as the magi brought gold, bring your whole church, living and departed, to the vision of your glory. As the magi brought frankincense, infuse all who seek you with the beauty of your holiness. As the magi brought myrrh, embrace all who suffer until the time comes when you flood the whole creation with justice and mercy. In this banquet restore us in your image, surround us with your company, and prepare us for your freedom; that we may come to resemble your Son, through whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory are yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen. LORD S PRAYER The introduces the Lord s Prayer. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. BREAKING OF THE BREAD A period of silence is kept. The says eluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen. BLESSING The prays for God s blessing on the gathered people, saying Christ our Lord, to whom kings bowed down in worship and offered gifts, reveal to you his glory and pour upon you the riches of his grace; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen. DISMISSAL Let us go forth in the name of Christ. Thanks be to God. ANNOUNCEMENT THANK YOU for your generous Christmas Eve offering of $6,500 to support the work of La Creche in Bethlehem. La Creche is the only Christian-run orphanage in the entire Palestinian territories, and is run by the Daughters of Charity. It looks after abandoned and neglected children, and its Christian ethos is of particular importance when caring for a sister and brother, who would otherwise we separated and brought up in single-sex establishments. 10

REFUGEE FAMILY SPONSORSHIP Building on the relationship begun with RefugeeOne during Lent last year, members of St. James Cathedral are joining together to co-sponsor a refugee family in need of practical help and friendship as they adjust to their new setting here in our city.
