6 Purification By Wendell Berry At start of spring I open a trench in the ground. I put into it the winter s accumulation of paper, pages I do not want to read again, useless words, fragments, errors. And I put into it the contents of the outhouse: light of the sun, growth of the ground, finished with one of their journeys. To the sky, to the wind, then, and to the faithful trees, I confess my sins: that I have not been happy enough, considering my good luck; have listened to too much noise; have been inattentive to wonders; have lusted after praise. And then upon the gathered refuse of mind and body, I close the trench, folding shut again the dark, the deathless earth. Beneath that seal the old escapes into the new. YOUR SPIRITUAL PRACTICE: LENT If you are seeking to cultivate good stewardship practices and let go of that which harms our planet, you might enjoy the 52 Ways to Care for Creation developed by the Creation Justice Ministries. This campaign shares weekly tips to make caring for creation part of your every day life. Try them out and feel free to share with others.

8 Give it up for the Earth! 2019 takes place from March 6 through to April 18, The Campaign encourages you to consider giving up some of the things in your life that are contributing to greenhouse gas emissions during Lent, and urges the federal government to stop financing the fossil fuel sector. To support the campaign, visit and sign the postcards that were given to you with this bulletin (also available during fellowship time) OPPORTUNITIES TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE Our neighbours want to buy us a permanent outdoor sign. Let's help them!! Many of you know that our temporary sign, with its "Spiritual Exercise of the Week" messages, was taken away last June. (Visit our website and scroll to Windermere in the News for more info). Over the months we heard from dozens of people who missed the spiritual exercises. Two of them, Kate Manson and Maggie Knauss, started a fundraiser so that our messages of hope and inclusion would never be censored again. They aren't Windermere congregants. They are great neighbours. Aren't we blessed? Let's help them spread the word about their campaign. Please take a moment to share the story with your networks. 9 Grant research/writing help needed! At the AGM in February, the Windermere United Church members passed a motion to encourage Council to take steps toward improving accessibility according to the accessibility audit results; and environmental integrity, beginning with an energy audit and corresponding commitments and grant applications within the Faithful Footprints program. The Council has moved forward with this and is on the road to getting an energy audit, energy benchmarking, and accessibility plans in place this spring. To help us move forward with that, we are hoping to find a volunteer who is skilled with researching and/or writing grants that could be available to us. If you can do this or know someone who can, please be in touch with Michelle in the office,windermerechurch@bellnet.ca Green Ribbon/Fabric Needed In an effort to be more environmentally conscious, we re going green for Palm Sunday, and need your help! With the growing controversy over the negative environmental impact of palm harvesting, we are trying something new this year and would love any green fabric or ribbons you no longer need and have stashed away in your homes. Feel free to drop them off to the church for us to upcycle into palms for Palm Sunday! Our food security cupboard needs help getting stocked up with the following: Pasta & Pasta Sauce Peanut butter, Cheese Whiz, Jams Cereal( hot and cold) Tea, Juice Crackers Canned goods (Tuna, Veggies)

10 Lay Readers and Fellowship Time Volunteers We are in need of volunteers for Lay Reading and for Fellowship time on Sundays! If you will be here on any Sunday over the next few months, please consider signing up to help out with these very important parts of our Sunday Worship and being church together. Stone Soup Network This is a not-for-profit project of Windermere United that builds stronger communities by making it easier for neighbours to share with each other. There are many ways to get involved; contribute your company s products or service to help a neighbour; volunteer with us and be part of the team; donate funds to help sustain the project. If you have questions about Stone Soup please talk to Doug Tindal or Chris Rotolo (director@stonesoupnetwork.ca). There for You Project When I was hungry, you fed me these are the words of Christ but also the words of some of us who have needed a helping hand and received it from folks in this congregation. In light of the fact that we all need help from time to time when the unexpected happens we have the There for You project. There is a sign-up list in the Parlour that you can add your name to. It means that you d be willing to help-out when someone s life takes a turn and help is needed. If you are preparing dinner, please consider making a little extra to add to our church freezer that is used to store emergency meals. See Jane Clendenning or Anne Marie Mohler for more information or sign up in the Parlour if you want to be part of this project. Talk to us about the many other ways you can help!: Some of the other things we re into as a congregation include refugee work, The Stone Soup Network ( Truth and Reconciliation and right relations, and/or community building. If you re interested in these things, let us know. Maybe we can work together!
