1 HOGE HERALD Hoge Memorial Presbyterian Church 2018 March Ten things you may not know about Ash Wednesday one of the most important dates of the Christian calendar 1. The basics -If you are completely clueless about Ash Wednesday: the black smudge you see on people s foreheads once a year is generally understood to be a mark of penitence, sorrow and a symbol of death. The holy day marks the first day of Lent, which lasts for 40 days and ends with the feast day of Easter. Christians remember the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ during Lent. 2. The ashes - The ashes used on Ash Wednesday are created by burning the palm crosses that were blessed on the Palm Sunday of the previous year. They are sometimes mixed with anointing oil to make sure they stick to the skin. 3. Observance - Ash Wednesday is a Christian holiday but it is not observed by all Christian churches; Roman Catholic, Presbyterian, Methodist, Lutheran and Anglican churches all observe Ash Wednesday. The Eastern Orthodox Church does not, however it does practice Lent. Christian denominations that do not usually observe Ash Wednesday include Calvinists, Anabaptists, the Amish, Mennonites, Baptists, the Plymouth Brethren and the Religious Society of Friends. 4. The moon -The holy day changes every year. It always falls 40 days before Easter, which is a moveable feast linked to when the Paschal full moon occurs. 5. Pre-Lent - We may indulge in heavily-syruped pancakes to mark the last day before Lent in Ireland, but our show of naughtiness pales in comparison with the blowout that take place in Brazil which holds the world s most famous festival: the four-day spree of colour, extravagance and dancing that is Rio s Carnival. Other places also hold pre-lenten festivals, such as Carnevale in Italy and Mardi Gras in New Orleans. 6. No smoking - Ash Wednesday is National No Smoking Day in Ireland. 7. Placement - The ashes are usually spread on a believer s forehead in the shape of a cross. However, they are also sometimes placed on the tongue or even, in the case of some clerics, on the crown of the head. 8. Wear or wash? - Many people choose to wear the ashes on their forehead until they rub off naturally as an outward display of penitence, humbleness and recognition of one s own mortality. Others churches encourage the ashes to be washed away at the end of the service as a sign of believers having repented and been cleansed of their sins. 9. Dust of the earth - The ashes used on the holy day are used to remind participants of their mortality and penitence. As the mark is placed on a believer s forehead, a priest will recite words such as remember you are dust and unto dust you shall return, a phrase based on what God tells Adam in Genesis 3: Sacramental - The placing of ashes is considered sacramental but not a sacrament in itself, meaning that while participation is encouraged by most churches it is not a rite. It also means that anybody can ask to receive the ashes if they wish, regardless of whether they are a member of a church or follower of a particular denomination.

We begin at 6:00 pm with a simple meal of soup in Wold Hall and proceed with an open discussion involving a Bible Study, prayer and music. All are welcome! This year, we will be studying the book Easter Earthquake. Easter Earthquake How Resurrection Shakes Our World Have you ever been in an earthquake? Earthquakes shake our most basic assumptions: that the ground will remain steady beneath our feet, that the world's current existence is the way it will always be. But when tectonic plates shift under the earth's surface and the ground shakes beneath our feet, it rattles the bedrock assumptions on which we build our lives. The Gospel of Matthew reports that on the first Easter morning, an earthquake rocked the earth, ripped open the tomb, and scared the Roman guards at the tomb, who "shook with fear and became like dead men" (Matthew 28:4). This is the second earthquake reported by Matthew. The first one took place on Good Friday, when the noonday sky turned black and Jesus died. In Easter Earthquake, James Harnish invites us to place the resurrection at the center of our Lenten journey. This 6-week study explores how Christ's resurrection shakes some of our most basic assumptions about ourselves and God. The earth-shaking promise of Easter is that God has not forsaken any of us," Harnish writes. "The risen Christ will meet us along the confused, chaotic, fearful paths of our lives and speak the same words the women hear at the tomb: 'Do not be afraid.'" This book reverses the usual focus of Lenten studies by starting at the empty tomb and seeing the entire journey in light of the resurrection. Join James Harnish in this energizing exploration that will inspire you to live as a more faithful disciple of Jesus Christ. 4 Updates and Reminders Martha Muses-More members were able to get to the February meeting. We had a study about George Washington and the ups and downs of his term and how it seemed God was with him. Jeni, again, furnished a light refreshment that we enjoyed through the meeting and discussions. Our next meeting will be March 13 at 7:00pm. Nancy s Memories At the age of 12 my neighbor, Lois Noble and I went back to our roots as Presbyterians. Haydon Jones was the choir director. It was the first time I had seen songs lined. I don t remember the minister, but will never forget the Robert Lewis family. They filled an entire pew. They lived on Demorest Road where they had an orchard. This was quite a walk from the Hilltop but we would go there to slide down the inviting hill on their property. Two of the daughters were in my classes at West High School. I do not remember my first Sunday School teacher but I do remember my first High School teacher. Her name was Phoebe Jerman. She brought a touch of glamour to the drab world as it was at that time. She not only was our teacher, she led a chorus of young ladies. That s what she called us, young ladies, and expected us to act accordingly. We practiced all year. We sang some hymns but also secular music. We sang as many programs as she could arrange. We sang at Masonic Lodges, the Neil House, Elk Lodge and more. And best of all, we got to wear formals. Mrs. Jerman knew her girls well! She knew the ones who could sing and read music. I realized she knew the girls who couldn t carry a tune but she never called it to anyone s attention. She would simply say someone is off and I would mouth the words but not make a sound. I wanted to stay in that chorus and be with my friends and wear a long dress. No one was ever without a dress. She put glamour in those dreary depression years. The Wold family moved to the Hilltop in Spring or early summer of Their only daughter, Eleanor, would start her senior year at West High. As most realize, it s a hard time to change schools but Ellie, as she was known to some of the girls, was great. Lately I ve wondered if the fact that her parents were not members of Hoge made her friendship with the rest of us easier. She played the piano and some other church tasks when needed but she was more relaxed with us. I did not attend morning church. I don t recall ever hearing Dr. Wold preach. I knew him only as his daughter s father. I think he may have known me through Ellie. He once told me don t be so broad minded you are flat. I never forgot that. He often sent Ellie and me as representatives to young peoples meetings. Once he sent us to the Y to a group of diverse young Christians. There were Methodists and a young Catholic priest but no Lutherans. Interesting! They ve come a long way. (Stayed tuned there is much more to come. Nancy has been receiving notes about how her writings spark memories.) Star Spangled Banner The minister was preoccupied with thoughts of how he was going to ask the congregation to come up with more money than they were expecting for repairs to the church building. Therefore, he was annoyed to find that the regular organist was sick and a substitute had been brought in at the last minute. The substitute wanted to know what to play. "Here's a copy of the service," he said impatiently. "But, you'll have to think of something to play after I make the announcement about the finances." During the service, the minister paused and said, "Brothers and Sisters, we are in great difficulty; the roof repairs cost twice as much as we expected and we need $4,000 more. Any of you who can pledge $100 or more, please stand up." At that moment, the substitute organist played "The Star Spangled Banner." And that is how the substitute became the regular organist!
