1 Messiah Messenger Gather.Grow.Go.Spread the Good News! People of the Bible A U G U S T 2018 Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of many. ~1 st Corinthians 12:14 July 1 Miriam & Pharaoh s Daughter came up with a crazy plan while their parents weren t looking. Miriam, Moses sister, and the Pharaoh s Daughter were down by the river where baby Moses was in a basket when they came up with a plan that saved Moses life even though that plan was going against what their parents instructions. Moses grew up in the home of the man who said boys like him should be killed as babies. A lot happened in the lives of God s people because baby Moses was allowed to grow up. God s movement in the world, God s liberation of people, can start when two girls come up with one crazy idea when they claim the freedom to re-imagine and remix the world. July 8 Mary Magdalene holds a unique place in the history of Jesus and it s not just that there are more conspiracy theories about her than anyone else. She was the first one to find the empty tomb on Easter and the only one, in the gospel of John, to meet Jesus face-to-face. We can learn a lot from her, but especially, we can learn from her persistence in waiting for Jesus, her sincerity in searching for Jesus, and her enthusiasm in telling others about Jesus. Her witness to us is inspiring. Though she s gotten a bad rap throughout the years, Mary Magdalene has a lot to teach us about how to love Jesus with our whole selves and show it with all that we do. July 22 Joseph wasn t having the best of luck. His brothers betrayed him. He ended up being sold into slavery. His owner s wife got him sent to jail. Bad stuff seemed to be routinely happening to him. Eventually, things began to change for Joseph. After getting out of prison, he was later elevated to a prominent political position and was able to provide food for an entire region of the world during a long famine. Joseph s story is about faithfulness, redemption, and forgiveness. Most of all, Joseph s life highlights how God works through the evils others inflict upon us. We are never left in our hurts, fears, and brokenness. God will always be with us and God will, from those dark places, raise us up to new life. July 29 Sarah and Hagar have a completely woven and deeply complicated story. Hagar is Sarah s slave whom Sarah sends to Abraham to produce a child because the child would be considered Sarah and Abraham s own child. Sarah ends up having a child of her own and becomes fiercely jealous of Hagar and her child which leads her to have Abraham banish them to the wilderness. The two women never reconcile but do go on to live strong and abundant lives. We, too, can trust that we aren t meant to live in our wildernesses even if we enter into them from time-to-time. We can pray that, like Sarah and Hagar, we can see God more clearly in the wilderness knowing that we all need to travel through the wilderness to get home even if it is a new home. These people have had interesting stories in their journey with God. You do, too! There are more stories to hear even as your story continues to be lived out and God is present in them all! Shalom, Pastor Lisa and Pastor Michael

3 THANK YOU! The ELCA National Youth Gathering was a WONDERFUL faith-enriching experience. We continue to offer our gratitude for all the support we received from you that enabled us to travel to Houston and join the 31,000 other Lutherans in worship, service, and learning. If you weren t able to be with us on July 15th as the youth led worship and shared of their experiences from the NYG, here are some snippets from their reflections of the experience. Also, you can The first night of the Gathering, the theme was God s call changes everything. God calls everyone in a distinct way to do a variety of different things. Ginny Owens, a blind singer and songwriter, told us that God has a calling for everyone, and we are all living in it, even if we have no idea what it is. He has a plan. Everyone has an important voice and everyone s story can impact the world. God dreams more for us than we dream for ourselves, and he will find the way for you to live out his calling. I was impacted by every single speaker, the emcees, the bishops, the house band, all of the artists, and our Moe and Messiah leaders. This trip will never be forgotten. We are so thankful for everyone helping us get there. -Kilah LaPlante One of my favorite gathering themes was on Friday night, Grace changes everything. By listening to all the speakers, It gave me a new perspective. Everyone of us is so unique and different, and no matter how good our successes are or how poor our failures are, we are all saved by God. Everyone of us sin. Everyone of us fail. And everyone of us is forgiven. One of the speakers really stood out to me on Friday night. Her name is Pastor Nadia Bolz-Weber. She stated that all of the hard stuff that has occurred in our life is texture on us for the future. Our life can t be just full of flowers and unicorns, we need things that create jagged edges in order for everyone of us to be unique and beautiful. She also talked about how we all have an ultimate person we want to be like and we work so hard trying to meet these expectations or goals. But, by always striving to be like someone else or wanting more, we are never ourselves. We can never achieve to be our ideal self. It s a moving target and a lie. God created us all unique so we wouldn t have duplicates. He loves us for who we are. The Houston National Youth Gathering is one I will never forget. Lyvia Moser On day 2 of the Gather the theme was God s love changes everything. That evening, we listened to a man named Marlon Hall. Marlon told a story about a man named Joe who had tried to make off with his brand new Iphone. When Marlon confronted Joe, Joe simply handed it back and said, You sure are blessed, God must love you. Then he said, Let me bless you with your Iphone. When Marlon got his phone back he realized that Joe was trying to give him a blessing that he already had. Marlon said, The same is true with God s love, because God s love is never ending. We don t know where it begins or ends, but we know that it is a circle. It s the love of God that was here when he said Let there be light and it is the love of God that will be there when all things pass away. It doesn t take a lot to spread God s love, be kind, smile, and to remember that God s love does change everything. -Dan Wensloff For our service day we arrived at a daycare center where we all were paired with kids as they came in. The girl I was with was so sweet, but was clearly distrusting with strangers. She eventually opened up and spoke with me about her favorite books, what she loves to do, and about her family. Her mother does not speak English so she spends her spare time teaching her the language. This little Hispanic girl who clearly hasn t had an amazing childhood was so smart and kind. Hope was the gathering theme of that Saturday. I had expected to try to fulfill this theme by moving mountains & helping to repair the broken city of Houston in one day. I thought how will I be able to show God s hope with just this task? But then again I think my view of God s hope was slightly skewed. I was thinking that God s hope had to be huge and monumental. As we were getting ready to leave that day I noticed Emeraldla, my new friend, really clinging to me. Before we said our final goodbye we hugged what seemed like a million times and each hug grew longer and made it harder for me to hold back tears. I learned that from Emerladla that God s hope does not mean I need to change the world. I saw God s hope in that little 10 year old girl that day. It might have been small, but it was God s hope. And God s hope changes everything. -Abby Huss The last day we were in Houston we went to NRG Stadium one last time for a church service led by Bishop Elizabeth Eaton. Bishop Eaton preached on the text from Matthew and described how this woman was ritually unclean, an outcast of her community, but she wanted to get close to Jesus. So, she took a chance and touched his clothes and was then healed after 12 years of sickness. Bishop Eaton then went on to describe how Jesus has and continues to make a difference in our lives. Bishop Eaton concluded her sermon by saying, 'Here is the wonderful news: where it looks impossible, remember most of all that Jesus has changed everything. When it was time for communion I was in awe to see how fast they distributed communion. They had groups of 4 people scattered throughout the stadium. It was very smooth how the whole process worked and 31,000 got to receive the body and blood of Christ. -Ben Olson
